Lets say that you have an uncle. he's a dirty, vile old man. he's abusive and a drunk. He never had any children. He beat his wife till she committed suicide (though no charges were ever brought against him.) An old man now, in his late seventies, he is also filthy rich. He hates his brother (your father) and has decided to leave his entire fortune (200 something odd million) to you.

you are recently married, and your wife is pregnant. You're both out of work, due to a mass lay off at a plant thats going out of business. (If you're a chick, you're pregnant and you and your husband are out of work) You have no idea how you plan to raise this child, with little savings and no income. you've tried to find a job, but they're hard to come by in your town.

so you concoct a plan. you hide in wait in your uncles bathroom. you plan to knock him over the head as he is getting in the bath. the opportune moment arrives, but you chicken out. As you're sneaking back into your shadows, your uncle hears a noise. startled, he turns, but slips and falls and cracks his head on the side of the tub. He dies there. you instantly become a multi millionaire.

so now comes the question. are you guilty? could it possibly have been you he heard? did this man deserve to die? so are you still committing a crime, even if you don't go through with it, but just plan it out?

thoughts?

He would only deserve to die for what he did to his wife.
Was the noise he heard me and my husband?

Yeah, i agree with hilary. wow. I wouldnt know what to do though.

Oh..gosh
Did this happen to you Sparx?
Thoser are questions that will take me a while to answer...

Are you guilty? Well I am not sure. Whoever made the noise. I guess it's their ault.

Could it possibly have been you he heard? Well yeah, there was nobody else in the room but me and him. [ you know what I mean ]

Did this man deserve to die? If he still abused, yes. If not, then no.

So are you still committing a crime, even if you don't go through with it, but just plan it out? Wow, I am not sure.

well, I would feel really guilty.....
IDK if anyone deserves to die. even if they did do something. they should be put into prison/jail and die in there.
but I would still feel very guilty.
I think that you would be guilty

That's extremely interesting.

I'd probably feel guilty, but the thought that I didn't carry out with it and it wasn't my fault would comfort me. I wouldn't call it a crime, exactly. It's more of an almost-carried-out plan that went wrong. But the thing is, the man's dead. We can't determine for sure if it was me he heard, unless some kind of videotape was recorded. I'd share the wealth with all my family members, and pray to God that this man (and God) forgive me when my day comes.

let me clarify. i don't have a rich uncle. I didn't try to kill anyone. simply a totally hypothetical question.

Since people here are guilty for planning school shootings and such I'd believe that I would be guilty for planning out his murder.

Wether I was the noise he heard or not, I think we would never know.
The man I believe deserved to die because of what he did to his wife. Everything else is purely just himself.
But yes I'd still feel guilty.

Would I feel guilty?
Probably not.
For what he did to his wife,he deserved some kind of punishment.
Who knows if it was me he heard?
It could've been an animal in the bushes,or a car passing by.
No one can pin it on me and say I killed him because it could've been anything.
I don't think he deserved to die, nobody deserves to die.
However,he deserves some kind of punishment for abusing his wife.
And I don't think it's a crime if you plan it out but don't commit.

Not my fault because I backed off of my original plan to kill him and I was trying to innocently leave. I wouldn't feel guilty at all.

i would feel guilty, but i didnt commit the crime... it was more of an accident.. and although he was a complete jerk, i dont think he deserves death... the punishment doesnt fit the crime... the only thing i think deserves death is if he was a murderer ... death = death.... abuse is more of a prison sentence crime

You are guilty. Legally and morally. The argument that it was morally right to kill him won't hold up in any court of law. That can be likened to vigilante justice..it's not your place to sentence him to death. This is morally wrogn because the rationale for killing is NOT even retribution. Even though it would be illegal, you can argue that he deserved what he got. But that's not what happened here. The motive was greed, plain and simple.
And I think you are responsible for his death. You would definitely get slapped with a suit for attempted murder (if you were caught, that is). The malicious intent is there. You also essetially caused the death by making the noise..that's an accidental killing.

It's not my fault he reacted to the noise. Nobody needs to know that I was planning to commit a crime, but it fell through because he died. I would still have a guilty conscience though and it will eventually eat it's way out of me

I wonder what its LIKE inside Shelbys MIND. It should be a Disney ride xD

Are you Guitly? I wouldnt say you are because you didnt cause the death. Yes you could've made the sound (never says that you made the sound in the story) but look at it this way. You get in a car accident it freaks some guy and he/she runs into the middle of the street and gets hit by a car and dies. Is it your fault because she/he got freaked out by the sound of metal crunching? and ran out into the middle of the street?

Could it possibly have been you he heard? Yes, but i dont think that you should be punished for making that noise

Did the man deserve to die? No, should've gone to jail

Are you still commiting a crime? Yes, you may have not caused a homicide but you did break into someones house

Well seeing that his wife had committed suicide earlier in life and there were no mention of him having any pets in the house it must have been me or my husband he heard or an old crick in the house that startled him. Needless to say I would feel really guilty about knowing what I was planning to do in the first place. I am not sure if anyone could ever find fault though towards me in the death so in that case I would take the money and put it into a fund for the child who wouldn't have known the man at all and use it for that.
