So - who's going - what are they wearing, etc., etc. Dish some Prom talk here!

DD is a Junior and is going - this is her 3rd Prom as she's had the same boyfriend since 9th grade and he graduated last year.

She's very small and petite - so the Princessy Ballgown does not look right on her - we've tried and failed with that look. She sticks with the column dresses and 5 inch heels!

Her dress this year is buttercup with silverbeading. It has a slit on the side and fancy strapping in the back. Her BF is wearing a white tux with a yellow cumberband and tie. She's carrying a nosegay.

Who's next??

Geez - what a tough crowd today! Lots of lurkers, but no talkers!:(

Sorry Pam,

My kids are not of Prom age yet, and I'm too old to go to one, lol.

Your daughter's dress sounds fabulous, and her bf's tux, lovely.

:D :D :D

Sorry Pam, our older 2 DDs are in college, and our younger 2 DDs are not of prom age yet.

Can't believe that there are not a slew of other DISers whose children are going to the prom!

So what do you think about your DD being a Junior and having the same (OLDER! :) ) boyfriend for 3 years?

:)

Beth,
He's 1.5 years older than her - he has a Spring birthday, she has a fall one!

Sometimes it bugs me - but he's a great guy! He works, plus he's putting himself through college and still lives at home. So - on weekdays, she's at home here at 9:30 pm as is he at his house. On the weekends, they usually say their goodnights before 11:00 pm!

My DD (17) and most of the girls she knows are not into the Prom. In fact, most of them haven't even dated, much less have a steady BF for a few years.

Nowadays, from most of the people I know who have DD's or DS's in HS, they go everywhere in GROUPS!

I know my DD goes to the movies, restaurants, Homecoming, etc. in groups of boys and girls.

I'm kind of glad, though. I feel safer when she's with a group and glad she's not dating one person exclusively.

And think of all the money I'm saving on prom dresses!

becca,
That's a very pretty dress - and I like the price, too!

FOJMO,
They do tend to hang out in groups. The good news is that we have never paid over $90.00 for any prom or homecoming dance dress. We usually get the prom leftovers on sale - sometimes a $130.00 dress for $20.00. We bought this year's dress - which is brand new - had the $200.00 tags - off of Ebay from a shop that went out of business, we paid $43.00 for it in January!

Another trick - the Giant Eagle floral department does beautiful work - and the nosegay will cost the BF $15.00 - and it's white and yellow roses. At the flower shop - a wrist corsage will set you back $35.00!

The tux prices are what is ridiculous!!:(

DD is a junior and has been dating the same boy on and off for 2 years. He graduated last year but they were "off" then so DD didn't go to the prom with him. They are going this year. Prom is May 2. DD is wearing the dress she wore as a bride's maid inher cousin's wedding last summer. Here is a picture of the family.

It is long and flairs out from the knee. It has "jewels" on the bodice. She looks better in it than the picture shows. I haven't heard about the tux or flowers.

Carol - all I got was a red X.:(

Where is your DD's prom and what are they doing for after-prom? Also - do the students rent limos there?

WE don't do the limo thing here - the prom is always held at least 30-45 minutes, last year it was over 60 minutes away. They have to ride a bus to the Prom. Then the after-prom is somewhere else.

This year the prom will be in the ballroom of a hotel about 35 miles away. Then they come back to the HS - the after-prom is at the local University's rec center - which is not making the students very happy. Prom tickets are $25.00 each, after-prom $18.00 each. Is the norm for prices?

DS is going to prom this Saturday. Here is the tux he is wearing.

Jean Yves Mirage tux

His date is wearing a black dress. She is teeny, tiny and DS was trying to volunteer me to alter her dress. I said no way. I hemmed two girls' dresses for prom last year and it made me a nervous wreck.

Her dad is supposed to be renting them a limo:rolleyes:

And for those of you who think it doesn't cost that much for guys

Tux - $160.00
Flowers - $35.00
Tickets - $120.00
Haircut - $14.00
Tip for limo - ???
Pictures - ???

He is a senior and dating a sophomore so the good thing is she has to be home at a decent time.

Oh, wow, Cinlee!! That answers my question!! I thought our ticket prices were kind of cheap - although everyone back here complains big time!

The BF's tux price is $115.00. DD will get her hair done - $35.00 - shoes, $28.00 - new make-up - $20.00, dress was a steal at $43.00, his bout. is around $4.00, again very, very cheap!

The prom is a dinner dance at the Mendenhall Inn, which is in the next state, probably 30 -45 minutes away. I hope they get a limo because I don't want DD to drive because I don't even know where it is so I am sur she doesn't. I haven't heard about an after prom party. DD wants several couples to come here for a while then the boys leave and the girls have a sleep over. It has gotten to the point that I would rather have them here than out where I don't know what they are doing.

I don't know the prices because I am not paying. Her dress was well over $200 but we had to buy it for the wedding so I am glad she will get some use out of it. Updos at the hairdresser cost $45. For homecoming she went to a cosmetology school and got the updo for $8 but you can't make an appointment so that is too risky for prom.

Sorry the picture didn't work. Oldkicker had it somewhere for me but a lot of the sites are gone now. Anyway, she has red hair and the dress is bright red, but it works. It has spaghetti straps and the bodice is straight across then goes down form fitting.

Pam!

GIANT EAGLE!!! Do you live somewhere near ME??? (And forgive me if you have told me this before!)

Our college sophomore has been going with her boyfriend for almost 3 years through her senior year of HS, and throughout her 2 years of college. He is a college Freshman. He went to her senior prom, she went to his. :) I hate to have them so exclusive for so long already, but we really like this boy too, so that makes it a little easier.

The last time that Ann want to the prom I think that the tickets were $60 or $80 for the couple. It included dinner and was held at a very nice hotel downtown.

They DO do the limos around here. And our DDs always did the after-prom (thank GOD!). We had hair, nails, jewelry, shoes, etc to pay for. Our DDs each paid for a lot themselves. We bought each of the girls one $200+ dress. The other times that they went they wore second hand dresses, or something that they borrowed.

That's one thing that stinks about the boys renting tuxes - they pay all that money for one night and then have to return it. I made an appointment though for him to get his picture made in it and that will be his graduation picture. :)

At least the girls can keep the dress and loan it or sell it later. Our kids prom is held at the Dallas Apparel Mart - yuck. I hate to tell him I was there this past weekend and they painted the lobby a horrible bright orange and pink- eeewwwww.

They had it there last year too. He said the food was awful but he was starving and ended up eating his date's dinner too:rolleyes: . He is paying for the tux and we are helping with the tickets and flowers.

Another thing - the guys parents get jipped because they usually pick up the girls and then go straight to the prom.:(

My DD a junior , her school has a senior prom you have to be a senior or asjked by a senior. Tthis is her first prom, it's on MAy 31. She's going with a senior guy who has been a good friend for a lot of years, not to be confused with her steady "boyfriend" of over a year who is a junior. But THAT whole thing is another long story.
Anyway, we have the dress, against my better judgement paid full price at Macy's  ...I can't remember the last time I paid full price for anything  . But she was trying them on for ideas of style and color and fell in love with it, I must admit everyone in the busy fitting room said that dress was "the one". She even said she loved it so that she would wear it again next year for HER senior prom (yea, right, we'll see ;) )
It's black (again against my better judgement- I think pastel for prom) but it looks awesome on her. It's very simple black, satiny, fitted bodice and flared skirt with a white pleat. Here's a pic of one that's similar though this is not exactly it.
www.nydressco.com/prodimages/403thumb.jpg[img]
Her's neckline is a little different and has less of the white pleat showing. Hers has two rhinestone sparkly things at the top of the pleat. We did get a fabulous buy on soem jewelry, rhinestone earrings and bracelet that were regularly about $50 regular price with coupons and clearance came to under $7 total :teeth: and she has "dressy" rhinestone FLIPFLOPS  that she insists are perfect. You can't really see them and they are comfortable...those were on sale for half price too ;) and she refused to pay for dressy high heels that she would take off the minute she got there.

She's not sure of a hairdo yet and I have no idea what kindof tux the boy is wearing or what color /type flower she should suggest...SHOULD she suggest or does she get it herself? Not sure on the local prom etiquette

Well our prom is April 25th and I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. Some people do the limo thing here, some don't. I think we are just taking the BMW and saving major $$$.

Aghh, the saga of my dress. First a green one, then a pink one, and finally a black and white one. It's fitted at the top and flairs out some. It's very classic looking and has spaghetti straps that crisscross across my back. I love it!!! This dress was only $100!! (Super cheap compared to most) I am wearing shoes from our Winter Wonderland dance (tall black with rhinstone buckles). I am yet to get a purse..hmm I should be working on this.

Our prom is at the Brown and Williamson clubhouse room at Cardinal Stadium. It sounds odd, but really, its nice. We are eating dinner at the Flagship which is a rotating restaurant on top of the Galt House hotel. It has a great view of the city and river! We should be there during sunset too which will be great.

After prom, we are all spending the night at one of the guy's house-- just play some pool, watch movies and hang out. Then the next morning we are getting up around 7 or 8 (yes we are crazy I know) to drive up to Kings Island for the day. That night we are driving back and crashing at someone's house to end our prom weekend.

Even though my prom was seven years ago it's still one of the best nights I've ever had. My dress was short and orange! Yup orange...it totally rocked and it only cost $35! I went with a large group of friends and we rented a limo and had the best time. Remember ladies when you go to prom to include a little sewing kit in your purse with safety pins..you may need it or a friend may need it. I had one in my purse....it really helps with tricky strapless bras :jester: A friend of mine had strap break on her dress so we whipped out the handy sewing kit and fixed it right up!!! Oh yeah don't forget your cameras! I left mine in the limo on the ride to my prom so I don't have any pictures from the actual prom just before and after. Anyway I hope you all have a great time!!!

Cinlee,
DD always goes over to the BF's house for photos, etc. or sometimes the Mom comes to our house.

Ann,
Your DD's dress is gorgeous! DD and her BF usually go and order the flowers together at the same place - that way they match. I would have her ask him want he wants to do.

Princess,
That's my DD's Prom date, too! Where is Cardinal Stadium at in Louisville? Papa John is at the Expo Center. She is also having her make-up done at the Clinique counter. Last year they (all of the After-Prom) to Six Flags Great Adventure the next day - it was in May - but it was only in the 40s and it poured the whole day!:(

Bobbin
Ahhh... words of wisdom - thanks!:D I know what you mean about the strapless bra thingie!;)
