Any good non-chain restaurants near DTD?

I've been to most of the restaurants listed here because there are chains across the country and the food is the same.

I'd like to know of some of the best non-chain restaurants around DTD, we find sometimes the food is fantastic, large portions, and reasonable prices.

We ate at a great old style (NY) Italian resturant called BRUNOS. It is on 192 West. As you head toward rt 27 it will be on the left side. Sort of opposite Orange Lake. It is easy to miss as there is a cheap souv. type store right next door and that dominates the small plaza. I was almost put off by it. Great veal parm, chicken parm, eggplant, and pizza and reasonably priced. Lots of local folks having dinner. Usually a good sign. Enjoy! Grammy:goodvibes

Great thread. I need to know this too since we will be staying and eating off-site. Anyone know of any good dinner shows?

There are plenty of chain restaurants on Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy also referred to as Hwy 192. We tried a local restaurant a few years ago that my husband talked me into eating at - Key W Kools Oak Grill. From the outside it looks like it might be a loud bar and grill but it is anything but; the exterior of the building is deceptive as it has bright neon lights but inside we found a darkened romantic room filled with white table cloth covered tables. We enjoyed our steaks and the service was unobtrusive and attentive. The food was good and the portions filling - more for the American palate -this was steak and baked potato fare which we enjoyed.

Key W. Kools is no more. It's now Wildside Bar-B-Que, the second branch of a local chain. Only been once, but I enjoyed it. Great service, good food. A lot more rustic than it was before, tho.

Lee and Ricks Oyster bar....It is not fancy , but if you like Oysters, thats the place to get them.
Someone else mentioned Gators, I like it there too.

That area is dominated by the chains. But you might consider Johnnie's Hideaway next to the Crossroads shopping center. It's owned by the local Orlando-area family that also runs Charley's Steakhouse, Fish Bones, Vito's Chophouse, and Moonfish in the area. These restaurants tend to do fairly well in the Orlando Sentinel's annual Foodie awards so if you're willing to venture beyond the immediate DTD area you might like these - Vito's on International Drive; Charley's on International Drive, Orange Blossom Trail and in Kissimmee just off route 192; Fish Bones on Sand Lake Road near the I-Drive intersection (though a lot of people seem to prefer the Lake Mary location, north of Orlando via I-4); and Moonfish on West Sand Lake Road.
