I don't know much about the Catholic church, to be honest. The Rudds have come in to have some work done on a trailer and we've talked. The church (St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church) is listed as a Roman Catholic church on their website.

I was curious, so I looked him up. Here is a story about him:
http://www.georgiabulletin.org/local/1991/06/06/a/

Thanks for posting the background story. I learned something new today! I'm totally confused now. Which, being Catholic, is nothing new!

Bubba's mom- sounded like you and DH had a good time!
I don't know much about Anthony and Opie or Opie and Anthony(however they are called). They are not known much in the midwest I suppose.
The only thing I remember hearing about them is a few yrs ago, there was something controversial they did. I think they had asked a husband /wife or girlfriend/boyfriend to have s*x in a church?
I don't remember if there was a lawsuit about it or Opie and Anthony got fined or something like that. That's all I know about them.

Good evening all....of EVERYONE here, Rose nailed it....here is Opie & Anthony's background: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/opieanthony1.html Way to go Rose :thumbsup2 I'm proud of ya! I am looking forward to the pix of the wedding you attended ;)

Janet....sorry the boys are givin' you a hard time.....knock 'em around I say Nah...best not.... :grouphug:

Odd 'religion' comes up....born & raised Catholic here....that all changed once I moved here (less than a year after being married in Catholic church) ...I could get into the story, but don't want to bore everyone again..... :rolleyes1 So, let's just say, we're "in between" churches right now, kay? ;)

Sharon.....sounds like yer Mom enjoyed comin' to YOUR house, huh? (Guess if I was short, I would too  ) O&A are on in Boston I think....they broadcast from NY and are on XM radio. I know part of their tour was in Detroit, but like Rose mentioned, they aren't really 'midwest'......

Tricia...did I miss your party?? I brought (but seriously, hope your day got a bit better  )

Raven and Jodie....HELLO!!!! Jodie, my QT w/ DH WAS the show Saturday nite... :rotfl: Nothing like sitting at a show and talking about the ugly tats, gross high heel 'tramp' shoes and "bellies" on the girls that were dancin' on the stages while waitin' for the show to start! :rotfl2: Glad you had good QT--important for every marriage...no matter HOW LONG ya been hitched :thumbsup2

Woke up to a 66 degree house this morning :cold: I do believe my shorts and flipflop daze are over for the season Back to wearin' "layers" :headache: During soccer practice, I hitched a ride to teacher curriculum night (Ry is on soccer team w/ a classmate--very convenient! :thumbsup2 ). His teacher is very nice and described him perfectly....only a few weeks of school, and she's got his number already! (Ry is one of those "has tons of potential, & is really smart, but needs to focus and apply himself" type kids.) We'll see how things go, but I have a good "first impression" of this one.

Well, guess I'm off to bed to finish watchin' my Eagles....see if they can pull this one outta their behinds :sad2:

Hope all have a good night and better tomorrow.....

Janet - we had a similar problem with oldest son's confirmation. But in this case, it was entirely the church's fault. Back in June of 2005, they informed us in writing that their confirmation would be the first Sunday in Feb. It told us to mark our calendars, it was written in stone, make plans now.

Come September, we have our first meeting at which my husband points out that that's Superbowl Sunday. :confused3 Granted, normally, not a big deal, but since we lived in Detroit, and (if you recall) the Superbowl was being held in Detroit, yes, it would have a big impact on folks trying to travel in for the confirmation, lodging, etc. We were basically told that the Superbowl had nothing to do with Confirmation, it would never be changed, etc.

In mid-October, we again went in and talked to the parish office to confirm this before my brother (his sponsor) and his wife made their travel plans to fly in that weekend - they didn't want to wait too long before airfare got ridiculous. We were told that the date would NOT change.

Early January (4 weeks before the confirmation), we get a letter in the mail telling us that "oops" we moved it to the following weekend due to "personal conflicts" that the Bishop suddenly had (honestly and truthfully everyone I spoke with believed he got tickets to the Superbowl).

Well, there was nothing we could do at this point. Trying to change the tickets incurred not only the $100 change fee, but also the difference in fare, which ws about $300 per ticket, so a total of nearly $800 to try to change it. Top that off with the fact that my parents (his grandparents) were going to be out of the country the following week on a cruise - which they'd just booked the week before, but was no longer changeable without stiff penalties. Can you imagine how upset we were?

First tried to talk to the church and see if there were any other alternatives - nope, they didn't care, too bad. Next tried to see if my brother and his wife could come the following weekend if we paid the difference in price and they couldn't due to work commitments. In the meantime, DH left a voicemail for the priest telling him the situation, that we were going to pay the difference for them to change their flights, and that it would come out of our offerings until it was paid off. Suddenly they cared! Actually had the bishop's office contact us to see if maybe he could be confirmed with a different church on the original day with a different bishop.

Well, 2 problems with this. 1 - he didn't really want to make it at a different church with people he didn't know, and 2 - turns out no other church was stupid enough to schedule a confirmation on Super Bowl Sunday in the host city!

We finally had to make the best of a bad situation, have my brother and his wife fly out the weekend before, have a party with the grandparents, etc., and celebrate the "pre-confirmation" and have DH stand in as DS' sponsor on the actual day. :sad2: Had we not been moving a few months later, the entire attitude of the church staff and priest ("tough - not our fault!") would have been enough to convince us to change churches. DH and I were very involved in the church and had been for 12 years - he was in the choir and a eucharistic minister and I taught religious ed - and the fact that they could care less about us until we threatened to not give them the money we'd given regularly, just totally turned us off the entire church!

Roman Catholic priests are forbidden to marry (we're all about rules...tons & tons of stupid rules). :rolleyes1 DS making confirmation next Wednesday, thought all the paperwork was set for his sponsor - nope! Padre is leaving town for a week, paperwork needs to be into diociese by Monday. Only person who could stop in & sign paper that could go @ lunch time (attesting to the fact that they'll go to church & be a practicing Catholic) is DIL - my sons BOTH OF THEM are going to freak......anyone want to trade places with me tonight:headache:

unless you like jumping thru hoops, run away fast...i won't even bore you with my annullment story and the tales i had to tell & cost involved to obtain in order to be remarry (even in civil ceremony) and partake in the sacraments.

yep...don't get ME started on that either!

....that we were going to pay the difference for them to change their flights, and that it would come out of our offerings until it was paid off. Suddenly they cared!

Along the lines of why we aren't "Catholic" anymore......always about the money....you just made my point....thank you.

Recovering Catholic here too. :upsidedow

I was raised Catholic, but never cared for it. Went to a Catholic College, cared for the religion even less. My great aunt is a nun. She never accepted gifts, lived in poverty. Meanwhile, Monsignor was driving a Cadillac?

I was the young dimwit praying that my mom would "forget" it was Sunday so I didn't have to go to Church. The deal was that I was supposed to go to Church while I lived in my parents' home. They gave up after my sophomore year of high school. Neither Mike nor I believe in organized religion. Totally respect others' rights to enjoy it and celebrate it, but it's just not for us. Mike was raised strict Baptist. His parents are REALLY involved in their Church. That gets in the way of our relationship, I think. Again, I totally respect their beliefs. However, I wish they'd respect mine (as my parents have come to, helped along by the fact that my brother and sister are no longer Catholics either). Mike and I are constantly getting religious stuff in the mail from them, articles, books, magazines, they make us say Grace before every blessed meal (and not a quick prayer either), even if it's at a silly diner (Don't get me started on how I was reprimanded because I took a bite of my half bagel breakfast before they prayed -- woops.). When Mike went to visit them in TN, they made him go to Sunday school, then service, then went out to lunch and stuff, then back for evening service -- he was at Church all day long, which would've been fine if he weren't there against his will. He couldn't say no. I can. And that's one of the reasons I have yet to visit them in TN.

Anyway, vent over. We're not total heathens. We just believe that a belief in God and organized religion do not have to be mutually exclusive.

I hear ya Jodie, and I would have to agree. (And, I don't blame you for NOT visiting the "monster-in-law's" in TN....I wouldnt' either!!!! No where in the Bible does it say to "come to my house and throw money at me every week or you're going to hell" (which is pretty much how I was raised to think).... I believe in God and there's "something better" in the afterlife, but I don't believe in the Catholic rules and such (especially come to find out the priests were, uh, 'entertaining' themselves w/ the boys  ) .....but, enuf about that....religion and politics are some sensitive subjects to some, and I'd rather not "go there". (A rule I have in the salon, is "no discussing religion or politics"...it just doesn't work.)

Anyhow, my Eagles lost....looked bad :sad2: Guess it's gonna be a looooong season....however, the Flyboys won their first preseason....a hint of things to come?? :scratchin

And, also good news from Bubba's Dad this morning. On IM, he happily let me know that we won $396 in the lottery last night :yay: Oddly, nobody had hit the daily Cash 5 and we play it every day during the week (ya know, buy tickets for the week from the same lady at the same store... ) Well, nobody had hit for a few days, so the pot was 450,000. On the way to soccer last nite (which was a "squeeze in" stop that made us a few minutes late for soccer practice) we stopped by our "usual" place and got $5 worth of quick picks. Apparently we had 4 of 5 numbers on one of the quick picks and won some bucks :thumbsup2 ...so much for playing "our" numbers regularly :confused3 Going out to dinner to celebrate Saturday....maybe :lmao: ....I'm thinking "vacation fund"....haven't "talked" to DH yet about it...only thru IM on the computer. Heck! We still haven't spent or decided what to do with our yardsale money yet....and that was the beginning of JUNE!!! :rotfl2: Hmmm :scratchin, I remember DH saying something about wanting a new camcorder (one w/ a hard drive) ..... :scratchin ........

Well, working 11am to about 9pm today..... please don't run up 5 pages of conversation that I'll have to catch up on  :lmao: Nah...j/k....talk all ya want..... (just not BAD about me ;) )

Hope everyone has a good day.......

:wave2:

Morning all!!

Thank you for the Birthday wishes on Sunday - coming down off of the sugar high from all that cake :lmao:

I was born and raised Catholic. My children were all baptized Catholic. That is where it ends. For years I have really just not felt comfortable with the religion and its "beliefs" as Barb said, where does it say come and give me your money??:confused3 When we received the annual Christmas donation letter it asked for a certain percentage of your salary - ummm....that is not a donation, that is a demand. Anyway, nuf said - I believe in a God and that there is an afterlife, but that is about it - I hold my own Church when I give up a prayer.

Its been super busy in beanville, cheerleading, football (fbean's team is now 2-0)now this week and next I have back to school night :faint: Laundry is piling up, house is getting cluttered again and I think there is a dog that needs a good walk :rotfl:

Eagles dropped another game they could have won, but the Phillies are now 2.5 out of 1st place behind the Mets - have to decide if we are going to pay for the postseason tix - as soon as we do they will drop out of the race, I just know it :headache: :headache:

I hope everyone is having a good day today and I will pop in here and there to keep myself caught up in the hoopla!

since my giants suck too, guess i can offer condolences to you Eagle fans. DH is a patriot fan.
Yes, I live in New England and root for the Yankees and the Giants-WE ALL HAVE OUR LITTLE FAULTS.......

I left the romans a few years ago at the height of the big scandal outa Boston and joined the Episcopal Church.
In case you have been living in a cave, they are all madly fighting and church splitting over the whole gay priest thing. I lived in NH during that. When we moved here, the local church here had way too many other problems and I went back to the Romans. much happier now. To Each his own:thumbsup2

RVGal- Best wishes shopping for a new church
I go to the first-ever megachurch, Willow Creek Community Church. I think Willow birthed the megachurch concept.
DH and I have been members of Willow for many yrs.
As of small groups, I've been there, done that, been in many different small groups. I have been in a mom's ministry group, a couple's small group(before kids came along), a women's small group, a family small group, special needs family small group. Now Willow Creek is doing the Neighborhood ministry thing, with something called Tables. You kinda hang out with your neighborhood with other Willow attenders, doing a dinner type thing once a month. It's fun at times, but some people can be so surfacy with their friendship with us. Not all, but some.
Wish you lived closer to me, as your family and my family could hang together at church :)
Keep me posted how things are going with the church shopping.

Thanks and I wish I lived near you so we could have the church thing settled easier. I guess it isn't supposed to be easy, right? Isn't that what we always hear... nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Sigh.

We'll find somewhere. The looking part is a pain in the tush, but we'll find it.

oh sure....they bend the rules for some, others get the rack:rolleyes1

i'm going to re-watch the DiVinci Code tonight & stew:mad:

DSs both stated they hate me over the confirmation snafu (even though i told #2 to get 'er done months ago & he didn't it's all my fault).

#2 is especially angry, many harsh words flung @ me, I've spent most of the day boo-hoo'ying...sometimes you just can't make it all better and kids just have to live with their own consequences.

It is tough being the parent when you've got to let the life lessons take place.

Thanks for posting the background story. I learned something new today! I'm totally confused now. Which, being Catholic, is nothing new!

I didn't mean to open the can of Catholic worms. I didn't know it was completely odd until I found the background story and read how few priests have had this special treatment from the Pope. Weird.

:lmao: :rotfl:

Tricia...did I miss your party?? I brought (but seriously, hope your day got a bit better  )

I'm trying really hard not to throw a marathon pity party for myself. Don't those people irritate you? My life is SO bad. Boo-hoo. Let me tell you how bad things are... again...

Seriously, I'm dealing with some crap, but I'm dealing.

Recovering Catholic here too. :upsidedow

Anyway, vent over. We're not total heathens. We just believe that a belief in God and organized religion do not have to be mutually exclusive.

I stayed away from organized religion for a long time because I had this mental block that if I went to church, I was going to have to think and believe exactly like everyone else there. Brad was raised in a strict Baptist church (one his mom now admits had too much control over their lives) and that colored his view as well. We decided to try a local church just to see what we could get out of it. What I found is that most of the other people there are just like us. They are showing up to enjoy the fellowship and praise. If you have a good pastor at the front of the room, you might walk out thinking about what he had to say. If not, you forget all about it by the time you reach the parking lot. I guess I thought people that attended regularly were not smart enough to think and decide for themselves... sheep blindly following the flock. There are some of those, but not many.

Anyhow, my Eagles lost....looked bad :sad2: Guess it's gonna be a looooong season....however, the Flyboys won their first preseason....a hint of things to come?? :scratchin

Pull up a chair, Barb. We'll have a loooong season together. I'll go out on a limb and bet that your guys win more games than my guys. :sad2:

:cool1: For winning lottery money! :cool1:

What a problem you have... deciding what to do with an unexpected chunk of cash...

Mornin'!

I'm trying to shake off the blahs by digging in around here and straightening up. Maybe if I feel like I've accomplished something, It'll improve my mood. Okay, it's a theory. I'm trying.

Calling all threaders!

YANKEES

who is your football team.....

giants

Braves
But we're 6.5 games back, so who cares.

ETA: Okay, I was answering the baseball question and managed to quote the football one.

I don't wanna talk about football. The Falcons stink.

I'm "wit" homie Tracie on the EAGLES.....still waitin for a win tho :confused3

Tracie.... I wouldn't buy Phillies tickets...you KNOW as soon as you do, they're done! Heck, blew an 11 run lead last night! :confused3 IMHO, any team that "just makes" the wildcard, prolly won't win the WS. Besides, it's gettin' cold out, and I'd rather watch from my nice warm house :goodvibes

Tricia...hope you are okay and you get out of yer 'funk'.... I usually find if i am extremely productive at something, it usually cheers me up! Good luck sista! :thumbsup2
