DFIL left a pair of Oakley sunglasses in a restaurant and when we went to lost and found they hadn't been handed in, he didn't seem to bothered but I was upset that people just take things. How would they feel?? Many people do this but they would think it was bad if it was their stuff being taken.

hope none of the "finders keepers" lot are Disers!!!!

I don't see any solution to the problem, do you? Other than not leaving valuables unattended. I still see strollers with toys, purses, etc. in them, lined up outside rides. Maybe we need a "watch the valuables swap" like the "baby swap" where one member of a party stays behind to watch the stroller and then gets to go on the ride ride immediately after the rest of the party come out.

Off topic ... Some years ago I was thinking about home security and the thought was of a burglar cutting through the side of the house. Then I thought, if someone did that I hoped he would hit an electric wire and electrocute himself. I never bought a house that flimsy but I have seen houses built with vinyl siding (about the thickness of a model airplane fuselage), insulation, and plaster board.

There was a recent story in the Boston area about someone who handed the store clerk a bunch of supposedly non-winning lottery tickets saying "put these in the second chance drawing [whatever that is]" but not signing the tickets. The clerk found a significant winner among that batch and cashed it in. The original owner filed a lawsuit, the final outcome is not yet known. If the clerk had waited a few months before ashing in the ticket he probably would have gotten away with the money.

I know of this story! She found a winning ticket in there (for millions; maybe 4 million?) and she has already started collecting the money. He fought her in court and it ended in a hung jury. As far as I know, he has not decided whether to go through another trial.

Some think, finders keepers, others think she should give it back and yet others think they should split it.

IMHO, I couldn't live myself or that money the way she got it and I'd at the very least split it.

I hate to hear so many stories about people loosing items that are never returned, but it is nice to know that there are so many DISers out there that wouldn't do that. I am so absent minded and often set things down and then forget about them. I did that to our camera once in MGM, but the couple we were with saw it and picked it up. He carried it around for quite a while until I freaked out and discovered it was gone. He just smiled and handed it back to me. Apparently, he had been carrying it for some time and I never noticed. If he hadn't watched me sit it down and then picked it back up for me, I don't know what could have happened.

We always put name, address, phone # tags on all of our cameras though just in case it gets lost and a nice person finds it.

Last trip, we were entering EPCOT through the gateway and after we got past security, found a wallet laying on the ground. Didn't even look inside, just walked it straight back over to security. Hopefully someone discovered quickly that it was gone and got it back. It would sure make me sick to loose my wallet.

Many years ago, while at the "game room" of the Contemporary, I had all my spending money with me, in my Raggedy Ann wallet. We were taking a break from the parks. My parents couldn't afford to take us to WDW, we were there because my grandparents paid for the trip. My dad worked months of overtime just to get enough spending money to go. We did odd jobs/chores to get spending money for ourselves. I was playing games, excited to be there and misplaced my wallet--with all the spending money I had.
A very nice person turned my wallet into the front desk and I was reunited with my twenty something dollars!!!!
Thank goodness for the nice people out there!!!!!!!!!!!!That kindness did wonders to restore my faith in people!!!!

What proof did the guy have that he was the original owner of the ticket? What if he was just trying to get winnings he didn't deserve by "saying" that he originally bought it?

It has happened to me enough times to believe; it's been true for me and my family. I firmly believe in doing good deeds and in turn (sometimes, not always) good will be done unto you just as I believe if you continue to do bad things to people, evetually bad will be done unto you. I'm not an expert on the case, I don't know exactly what the proof is but I do know that no one is disputing the ticket was his, it's more a matter of whether she's oblidged to give it back.

If you leave something behind, such as leaving your purse on the table and walking out of the restaurant with your party, anything you left behind is your loss. Anyone recovering anything that they were careless enough to leave behind should consider themself blessed.

IMHO, there is ONE exception to this rule. If you happen to SEE someone drop something, or see them leaving something behind, it's only fair to say something to them. Other than that, finders keepers ... If you have lost something due to carelessness, maybe it will serve you as a lesson to be more carefull with your stuff

Whoa - picking up something you find in the street (or anywhere) that doesn't belong to you and keeping is is THEFT. You should at least attempt to find the owner of the property that's been found, or hand it in to the Manager or CM of the area.

Sorry, but I've been on the receiving end of this before. I was at an evening out with friends (at Islands of Adventure) when someone "found" my wallet and maintained it was finders keepers. (Incidentally, they found my wallet inside my bag!) I practically had to turn cartwheels to get my property back and the woman who gave me it back asked for a reward!!! I told her that her reward was NOT to be reported to the Police and charged with theft.

Your comments made me SO angry. A moment's carelessness would equal days worth of misery for me. I live in the UK and would have to get credit cards etc cancelled and replaced - and hopefully I wouldn't have lost too much cash in the meantime either. I just hope that you live the rest of your life with an acute awareness of exactly where you have left your personal possesssions. If not - be prepared to have someone do to you, what you are clearly advocating others to do.

I had a strange experience happen to me. We were in England pavillion at epcot, sitting awhile to relax and I saw this backpack on the ground. Noone was around it for quite a while so I went to pick it up to turn into lost and found. Well, just as I was picking it up the owner (i hope he was anyway) returned and started loudly accusing me of trying to steal it. I tried to explain I was just going to turn it in but he wouldn't believe me and used some not nice language as he stormed off. Everyone was looking at me as if I was the dredge of the earth.

I'm always afraid something like that would happen to me! On our last trip, we found a digital camera sitting on a bench in the smoking area near Space Mountain. My parents, DH & myself sat there for what must have been 20-30 minutes, just in case the owner came back. After several minutes, DH kept saying 'just turn it in already!' But, I was so paranoid that as soon as I picked it up, the owner would come running back, assuming I was taking it!

We eventually brought it to the cm working at the little souvie stand nearby - hope the family got their camera back!

Back in 99. We were at Typhone Lagoon and my husband had our passes, key Fob for car alarm and a LOT of CASH all inside a small plastic zip lock bag in his swimsuit pocket , trying to keep it dry !!!. I know I know BAD idea.

Well as we are leaving the Lazy River he realizes that the bag is gone, He takes off down the river while I try to take care of our young daughter. As he is Frantically running past everyone people start to ask him what he is looking for When he tells someone his wallet they point and say it " Went that way " .

Eventually He caught up with it down river


Thank goodness no one stole it " Finders Keepers ", but I was a little surprised that people watched it float by and didn't pick it up and hand it to one of the lifeguards along the way.

So we definately were blessed with Disney magic and were lucky that at that time the people in the river were all honest.

Almost forgot our only example of a 'lost item.' Towards the end of our trip, we decided to do all of our shopping. Well, during the MGM 'leg,' I bought a cd in one of the gift shops. My dad decided to sit the rest of the shopping trip out, so he sat on one of the benches near the entrance to the park, over by where you rent the lockers. I, of course, gave him my bag to hold.

About 30 minutes later, shopping done, we picked up Dad & were walking out of the park. We hadn't even gotten to the parking trams, when we realized he left the bag on the bench. Well, DH took off running back to the turnstyles, but the bag was ALREADY gone! Of course, we checked with Lost & Found right away, but nothing turned up! DH & I were to be there another week & we checked with Lost & Found daily. It never turned up. Granted, it was just a cd, which I replaced with no problem, but the whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way. As has been brought up here before, I just don't know how someone can walk away feeling entitled to keep something that wasn't rightfully theirs. I don't care if it's a $1 pen, I certainly wouldn't feel right about getting any kind of enjoyment out of it! Oh well, live and learn...

I didn't read the whole thread, but back when my oldest was about 3 she dropped her pink princess cone hat we had just bought her in a crowd in Fantasyland. In a matter of minutes someone picked it up. When we realized what had happened we saw another family putting the same hat on their child and they walked off quickly. Who knows if it was our hat, but I could probably bet safely it was.
We went to lost and found that night and nothing....
