Someone PLEASE explain the attraction of satellite TV!

I think some folks are surprised to learn that many of the better installers place the requirement that they have final say over dish placement in the contracts. Dish placement is so critical to service reliability, something which individual installers are often called to account for, that they can't allow aesthetic considerations regarding dish placement to compromise quality.

Here in MA, DirecTV antennas are typically aimed southwest, while Dish Network antennas are typically aimed southeast, so even which service you choose may affect placement.

You are so knowledgable. Now that you mention it...you are correct. It is a directtv dish and though I stated it was aimed to the south, it definitely was angled 45 degrees and not aimed directly south.

Are you really that naive? This thread has "spun out of control" and people got "defensive" because you came across as a huge snob! You went out of your way to talk about how you paid half a million dollars for your house and how you have so much more taste than your neighbors. You are now upset because instead of everybody being in awe of your wealth, they are telling you to mind your own business.

To the people who wondered why the OP didn't spend half a million dollars on a house in a secluded area if she is so sensitive? Isn't it obvious? In a secluded area, others wouldn't be as aware of what a fabulous home and great taste she has.

I have to tell you that as a native here, 500,000 for Ponte Vedra isn't much really. For those of you that watch golf, it is right down the road from the TPC Sawgrass. It is a nice area but it has a lot of houses that make 500,00 look like a drop in the bucket.

My house isn't anywhere near worth that much, especially now, it was close at one time, and we have tons of dishes in my neighborhood, and we aren't on top of each other either, I don't live in Ponte Vedra, but I do live in St John's County, east and where the OP lives.

I just hate some of the attitudes that come across snobby, Trust me, this is not a big deal In Ponte Vedra Beach, where a lot of multi million dollar homes are located.

And Lisa, I live just off of 210. Small world, isn't it?

Totally crazy, mhsjax.

I lived in Poor Man's ponte vedra. All off of A1A...but the west side. And our home....cheap cheap cheap. And I used to work at the Winn Dixie on SolanO (Solana?). But I believe they closed that a few years ago.

Yes ---small small world!

This thread made me laugh because when we 1st moved here (9 years ago), we put up a dish (it's maybe 2 feet wide at best) on the house. Well the HOA person who lives directly across from me said we couldn't have it there, so we had to move it to the fence.

Well then we switched from Direct TV to Dish network (or vise versa, not sure), so we put up the new dish on the fence but decided since the HOA had no recourse, we left the stub of the old dish sticking up just to irritate her and know there was nothing she could do.

We no longer use either Direct TV or Dish Network (we switched to comcast), but I'll be danged if I'm taking those dishes down because I know she hates them.

I guess I am "that neighbor" :rotfl: It's become amusing to annoy her. Practically everyone here has a dish, but she has to look at mine daily and hates them. I LOVE IT and LOVE knowing she can't do anything about it! If she hadn't been such a crappy person about it to begin with, then, the situation may have been different.

I'm tempted to put another one up on the house just to irritate her since they passed that law.

Be careful about how you approach this OP, because, you may not like one, but, you may end up with a neighbor like me that just does stuff to irritate you, oh, because we can :hippie::cool1:

Wow--this thread makes me realize I never, never want to live in a neighborhood with an HOA. Oh, and kudos to the lady who talks about her child support outside away from her kids' ears. That is classy. Complaining about an 18 inch dish is not.

And I don't understand why people feel the need to nanny other people. I don't care if my neighbors put up a fence, a shed, a pool, hang their laundry outside to dry it, keep a car parked in the street in front of their house, put their garbage out the day before, paint their house bright yellow (which one has done in fact) or pink or any other color, put a satellite dish smack in the middle of their front yard, or anything else. None of those things effect how much I "enjoy" my house in any way what so ever.

Luckily we have no HOA that nannies us and tells us what we can and can't do with what we paid for. People should just let other people live their lives and stop being such nosy hens.

I totally agree with everything you said!!!!

This thread is a prime example of why I'd never buy a house with an HOA.

I would hate to pay half a million for a home only to end up next to someone so uptight that they are worrying about a satellite dish! I'd be tempted to stick pink flamingos all over the front lawn out of spite. ;)

I agree- I can't imagine having a neighbor so anal about things that a stupid satellite dish on a house would get her panties in a wad! My neighbor has a dish on her house and I actually forgot they had it until reading this thread since its on their house and makes no matter to ME!
HOA are the worst things ever in my book- would never live anywhere that has one. My neighborhood doesn't have any HOA and well can you imagine- we all manage to cut our lawns and maintain our homes without one!
We park in the street because EVERYONE does around here- with houses with one and 2 car garages and one or two car driveways there is not enough rom for all the cars. I have a one car driveway and we have 3 cars-I have my main one and a spare car-where would you like me to park that LOL. The family across the street has 5 cars (2 parents and 3 kids 16 , 18 and 20) and a one car driveway and a one car garage--either they park the three cars in the street or on their front lawn- thankfully no one parks on their lawns so they go in the street.

I picked the neighborhood for the general "feel" and "look", and when I drive to my house everyday, I want a consistent look of well-kept, maintained homes. I appreciate that people don't like being told what they can and can't do with their properties, and that's why there are places with HOAs and places without them. I think the "do whatever you want" attitude brings the neighborhood down as a whole not only aesthetically, but in value as well.

As for your "nosy hen" comment...it's a bit of a stretch considering the thing is 3 feet away from my driveway. It's not like I'm peering out my bathroom window with binoculars snooping at what the neighbors are doing...people can live their lives any way they see fit, until it starts affecting other people, and in this case, I feel like it affects me.

That all said, I did read the FCC law and it looks like I'm out of luck...I'm sure you all are glad to know! But it still doesn't make me feel any better about it. I'm hoping my tree grows fast and big enough that I don't have to look at the ugly dish too much longer!

Oh, and FWIW, this is the neighbor who stands out in her driveway on her cell phone yelling about her child support! Now who's the great neighbor...:rolleyes1

Then don't live in a neighborhood with a HOA! I picked this 'hood b/c there IS one.

You say I'm uptight, I just say I have some taste and care about the look of my neighborhood.

To each his/her own....obviously.

I would bet money your neighbors have some really nice things to say about you too :rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

I can tell you that we have NEVER lived in a neighborhood with a HOA and we have NEVER had an issue with neighbors keeping up their homes/yards. Your house isn't the big deal you think it is and I will bet money our neighborhood is significantly more expensive then your neighborhood and our property values are not the least bit affected by not having an HOA. HOA's, as a matter of fact, are really not common here, you typically only see them in townhome developments-by law.

See, there is this thing called class.....

You are correct. There IS a thing called class.

Can we get back to talking about teevee now? ;)

Just pointing out that a HOA does not make for a nice, expensive neighborhood...

It isn't the HOA that makes her think she lives in a very expensive neighborhood, it is where she lives. Ponte Vedra. And yes there are some VERY expensive homes here. Like I said earlier it is where the TPC Sawgrass is, I am sure you watch golf. lol. Just a lucky guess.

Anyway, her house value is nothing compared to a lot of the homes in Ponte Vedra. Since you aren't from here, let me explain. It seems to be a trend, that people,(not all by any means) seem to think that because they live in Ponte Vedra, (please stick out your little pinky when you say that) they think their you know what doesn't stink.

Most newer neighborhoods in this area, and yes I live not too far from her, have HOA's. It is almost impossible to get away from, unless you want to live in a much older neighborhood. Most of us have no problems with our HOA.

This isn't about TV it's about what a poster "thinks" is a "nice" neighborhood :lmao::lmao:

I am SO glad HOA's are not popular around here--we seem to manage just fine without them. :lmao:

We live in an HOA and love it. We have a very reasonable HOA without a bunch of punitive stuff. We can park on the streets and while we do have to run it by the HOA first, can pretty much paint our house any color we want as long as it isn't neon stripes or something completely bizarre.

We love all the great things our HOA does for us. The town said it doesn't have much money, so cut out all 4th of July activities.

So, our HOA is sponsoring a party down in our commons area. An old fashioned parade for the kids with their bikes decorated and a barbecue. And since it is a small town, the rest of the town was invited too.

During the year they host an easter-egg hunt for the kids, movie/pizza nights in the pool for tweens and teens (different nights), an adult only party and many more neighborhood activities.

Having somebody else plan and throw a party to help you connect with your neighbors is great fun.

They have negotiated some great deals on trash, recycling, snow removal, etc. We pay half of what the rest of the town does for trash pickup and we get 2x better service. So much so that the town is demanding that the rest of the residents be allowed in on the deal.

We have far more problems with our town code enforcement officers being anal and writing people up for having boats on the street, weeds in their yard, garbage cans on the sidewalk (their favorite thing to write people up on) than the HOA.

Not all HOA's are bad.
