IMO, I think this is obscene for so many reasons. DH thinks they're just looking out for their employees, like any other company affected by Katrina is.

I think if the NFL had any ***** (although it would be a cute pun, it would probably get pulled, so I'll leave it blank), they would take that money and donate $40k for each player, to the relief efforts, or to somebody who really needs it.

Not every NFL player is making millions of dollars. It includes practice squad members, injured and even a weekly amount for those that got cut. Some may need the money, who knows.

I agree with your husband. Its like any other company. They can not select those out that they think need the money more, so they give a fair share to everyone.

Those that don't need it may end up donating it, who knows.

Private money to the players. The NFL ran a fundraiser the first weekend of the season (when the Saints played their "home" game at The Meadowlands) and raised several million. I'm fine with this.

I see nothing wrong with it...but I also live in Biloxi, MS and had serious hurricane damage and have already run out of money. Insurance does not cover everything no mater how much you have. I suspect that several players lost everything and had family members in the same boat.

not that I see anything "wrong" with it, but I am sure the Saints players suffered much less than any regular citizen. (not regarding their families ) but I am with the OP.....why should the "Saints" get a BONUS for playing at away stadiums under these conditions? It isn't like there were doing so flipping great at home anyway.

Another vote for there's nothing wrong with it.

My guess is that many of those players have given a lot of money to relief efforts already. It was money that they very possibly could have earned had they had a winning season, and playing an entire season on the road and under intense stress makes that possibility difficult at best.

Kudos to the team owners for doing the right thing by their players.

When I first heard about this, it was on a AM news channel and the DJ about had a fit. Of course, the first POV I heard was his and it's hard to get that information out of my head.

(The fact that the NFL (I don't watch football) gave millions to the relief effort wasn't mentioned. To me, that does make a difference.)

I think the main issue I had with it, is the reason for the money; that they had to work in unusual circumstances. According to the news reports, these guys travel first class and were staying in San Antonio. It just doesn't seem that they were put out too much. Plus, the reporter mentioned that many of these guys don't even live in New Orleans.

Here in Houston, we have tens of thousands of Katrina victims who lost everything and have nothing at all left to go home to, much less a home. It just seems decadent, since the Saints have so much more potential for pulling themselves out of this, than the average person who was affected by the disaster does.

I truly want to see the rationalization behind it and I knew there were reasons that I was unaware of. Thanks for the answers. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but knowledge is never a bad thing.

My father is from Biloxi and all of my relatives there lost their homes, completely. I'm sorry that you're having to deal with it too.

I went through 3 hurricanes 2yrs ago and lost my roof amoung several other things that went wrong. Also had no power or phone for a week after each storm.However I showed up to work everyday. Wheres my bonus for performing under unusual, unanticipated conditions’.
I think its wrong. People have no money and they are getting a bonus for making tons already. The NFL may have donated money to katrina ,however these players are receiving not donating. If the players donate the money they receive then thats a different story. But I doubt they were living at the dome waiting for their next meal. Like another post said they were flying first class while others were being airlifted off their roof where they lived for days. Now that deserves 40,000.

It is possible that some of the better paid players might donate that money to hurricane relief. Many of the less players are not as well paid as we all think. They might really need the money. An I guess that they were away so much, they may have been unable to help their families with free labor, so this could have cost them more.

You're taking it like I did, then. I know that not every player on the Saints makes what the QB makes, but I bet even the worst paid player on the team, makes a bunch more than the average Joe who lived in the 9th Ward who lost everything.

I'm with you, I see that amount of money as an obscene amount. While it is nice that the team and league are taking care of their own, I have such a hard time with that amount of money. Even $2,000.00 a week is obscene, some people got less than that to rebuild their lives, and they weren't making lots of money to start with. PLUS they still had jobs, they still played and received full salary all year, too bad not everyone else in that area can say the same.

Just as an aside, does anyone know how much a person on the practice squad is paid? How about if you are on injured reserve? Do they get full salary, or partial salary.
