As I've posted before, DD3.5 has allergies. She is highly allergic to peanuts/nuts and yeast. If she is exposed to nuts or a large amount of yeast, she goes into anaphylaxis. She also has some allergies to inhalents like cat dander, pollen, dust mites and we prevent reactions with Allegra and Zyrtec. I've rarely seen her have any kind of reaction to the inhalents - just a runny nose from cut grass and a few hives.

Yesterday, she got sick on the couch - from drinking too much, too quickly. After I got her cleaned up, we went back to the couch and I got some carpet/upholstery spray made for pet stains (all I had) and sprayed it on the stain and cleaned it up.

About 10 mins later, her nose started running. Then she started continuously sneezing. Literally she sneezed several dozen times in about 10 minutes. Before I knew it, she started wheezing. I got her Albuterol and gave her a breathing treatment. She was fine after that.

So am I right in that she had an allergic reaction to (probably) the spray? Or maybe it irritated her and triggered a response? She was at least 3 ft from the spray so she couldn't have inhaled much. I didn't think people could have allergies to chemicals - it was a protein thing. :confused3

I would be more inclined to think you stirred up something on the couch but yes, people can have allergic reactions to chemicals. I would bag up that bottle of whatever it was and bring it to her next doctor's appointment for evaluation.

Did the spray actually have a smell? I find I can't use alot of in home sprays/cleaners that have a smell to them without sneezing and coughing.

Just a side note, do you have a medic alert bracelet for her? I would get one and have all her allergens listed, even the minor ones, since she has such a bad reaction to so many things.

It definitely could have been the spray. I can't use some cleaners - Murphy's Oil Soap for example. It makes me sneeze and wheeze and makes my eyes swell shut. Like your daughter, I have anaphylaxis to nuts and fish. There may have been a nut oil in the cleaner.

Yes, it did have a fragrance. It did not have an ingredient list unfortunately. Funny thing is that her yearly appt was the day before yesterday. Dangit! She actually got rid of some food allergies  - eggs and chicken - but yeast and nuts stuck around.

I have considered getting her a bracelet. Right now everyone that's around her knows of her allergies, but I'll probably get something when she goes to Kindergarten.

My DD had issues with Murphy's Oil Soap too - and she's also allergic to nuts.

I'm allergic to corn and can't use Febreeze so yeah, I could see how a cleaner could have something that would trigger a reaction.

Intersting--my dog is allergic to corn and I have some cleaners that contain Fabreeze. Her allergies have been really bad lately which I have attributed to fall coming but maybe it is the Fabreeze?

I would get her a bracelet or necklace anyway. What if you lose her in a store? Or you are in a car wreck with her and unconscious (thus unable to alert the medics to her issues).

Oh, and I have had allergies to some cleaners. I also had an allergy to bleach which came out of nowhere and lasted about 5 years and then went away:confused3

I don't know if it was the previous poster or someone else, but yeah, I just learned here yesterday that febreze uses corn products.

Bleach is bad for me, too.

I once had a horrible awful nasty asthma attack (before I was ever diagnosed with it, apart from exercise-induced) and sneezing attack (having both at once is very very difficult and feels that you are going to turn inside out) while cleaning a tub with lemon-scented Comet.

I would definitely not use anything scented.

And, given that it worked for me...I would get her under chiro care. Once I was dragged, nearly kicking and screaming, into a chiropractor's office at 16, I had two appointments and then my allergies were GONE. As long as I remain under regular care I'm basically fine (if I'd just go vegan again I'd be 100% fine, but those lattes are too yummy). I wish my mom had found her chiropractor years earlier, so I could have been under care and allergy-free longer. Might not have the same effect on your daughter (worked for me b/c the immune system problems were caused by my nervous system being impeded by vertebral subluxation), but it's worth a good try!

i do believe, although i can't say for sure as i'm not a medical doctor, that scent can trigger allergies. i cannot use any sort of fragrance in my home except scented candles or lysol spray. any sort of plug-in fragrance (bath and body works, glade, etc.) or air freshening spray sets off a violent sneezing, runny nose, God-awful headache combo attack for me. and it happens very quickly-within 5 to 10 minutes. like your DD, OP, i have multiple allergies, including dander and dust mites. hope your babygirl is feeling better!

Same thing happens to me when I walk into a room where Pine Sol was used recently.

It's nothing life threatening (in my case at least) but is majorly annoying.

Yes there are chemical allergies. Where to start because my family is a great sample. And it is not so much an allergy as people are more sensitive to chemicals than others.

OK, When you spray something from a cannister the spray projectile is compressed so it can travel easily in the entire room. You breathe in the fine mist. Someone who has asthma is going to have a reaction. It can trigger a spasm I would imagine. For me, it is an irritant and causes soreness if I am exposed to too much.

My ex SIL is so allergic she can only use wet cloths to clean and can use no propellent sprays. She has very severe asthma.

We have not used fabric softner in 10yrs because we get searing migraines from something in there. Not sure what it is.

Me? I wear gloves however, I foolishly used a spray in the shower a couple of weeks ago without covering my mouth and face, so I wake up the next day with one of my eyes puffed out like a zombie. I had to flush it repeatedly to get rid of it. GAK.

My skin reacts to chemicals in a bad way.

Thanks for all the comments.

Would y'all classify this as an asthma attack? She has had breathing issues that were induced by a cold/croup. Her ped called it asthma but we nipped it with steroids and Albuterol. But if this would be considered an asthma attack, I should definitely call her allergist to get her an inhaler. Which makes me think - this reaction took about 20-30 mins. Do they get subsequently quicker?

Vettechick....

I would LOVE to hear anything you could tell me about allergies to yeast....
Myself, and others in my family, have long thought that we were allergic to yeast... but, don't most doctor's dismiss this as an allergen????

Sorry that I don't know enough to comment on your DD.
I send  for anybody with serious allergies like this!!!!

But, I would appreciate it SO much if you could share any thoughts info on yeast as an allergy.

Thanks!

Possibly~ asthma triggers can be from illness, allergies, and other things (like the cold for my DD). They can get quicker, but it's just so variable. That is one of the reasons asthma is hard to control. I would definately follow up with your allergist.

The one thing I wanted to mention is, that my DD is also severely allergic to peanuts/tree nuts. As she got older and used more "adult" personal care products, like shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc. We found we had to start reading labels after she had an allergic reaction to a natural face scrub that contained almond products. We didn't even think about this! So as your DD grows old enough to use these products, talk to your allergist about them or read labels and avoid. :flower3:

My DD also has a tree nut allergy and coconut allergy (which sometimes is classified as a tree nut). I have to read lotions, shampoos, soap because a lot of products have coconut oil or some kind of tree nut in it. I just went to Bath and Body Works and bought one of those cute Halloween soap dispensers........ended up having to return it because coconut was in it. Very frustrating. My DD is a girly girl and loves trying different shampoos, etc. Well she used to love trying them until she got this allergy.....poor kid.

My disclaimer is to ask the allergist ;)

But for me...I have allergies and hen I have sensitivities. I personally consider the sensitivities (to chemical floral sense--so pretty much any product that "smells good") allergies...but evidently ther is a difference though I feel the same for both an allergy and a sensitivity. Allergies send histhamines (sp?) which is why we take anti-histamine. Sensitivities do not. But as I states, it seems my reaction is the same...but usually getting away from the chemical either by moving away from it or washing it off, helps. But if exposed to my allergens---once they get started, nothing stops it but a histamine blocker. Sometimes I do need to take meds for the sensitivities. I do want to get tested for them, but not sure how that works.

Anyway--she may not be allergic..but that doesn't mean it is something her body appreciates. Consulting with your allergist will help and is essential since she has allergies that have shown to be life threatening.
