Why are something like 25% of young people unemployed? Not enough jobs?? None of the articles I read explain anything.

The whole thing confuses me. You mean they CAN'T fire young workers during their first two years? What if they just plain do a crappy job? Doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.

My first reaction is that these kids seem awfully snooty, but again I don't really know much about this.

France has a socialist economy and it is very hard, but not impossible, to fire people. Unemployment in France hovers around 10% and many of the unemployed are younger than 25. In an attempt to reduce unemployment among the young, the French government enacted a law that makes it easier for employers to fire their young employees. The idea is that employers will be more likely to risk hiring young workers if they can more easily terminate their employment. The young people protesting the law say that it codifies age discrimination and that they should have the same job protections as other employees.

France has a long tradition of social unrest and street protest.

Not to mention an economy that's in the toilet, mired in excessive regulations, and untenable demographics.

Unemployment for those under 26 exceeds 20%. France's work week cannot exceed 35 hours, they have 6 weeks vacation per year, liberal unemployment and welfare benefits and low productivity. It is very expensive to do business in France, which may have something to do with the high unemployment rate. This will be an a new first for France however, they will finally find someone they can defeat; The French! It's just a matter of when the police wave the white flag!

Check this site out; it is for real, a British airline president has called French Air Traffic Controllers "lazy frogs", telling them to get back to work. This page is on the airlines site for flight information and ticket purchase. :lmao:

"Lazy Frogs"

Hey, didja notice many of these courageous protesters are wearing masks to conceal their idenity? Cowards.

How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?
No one knows... they haven't tried it yet.

OK, enough of the French bashing (for now)... :teeth:

French people love to protest things. When we were there a few years ago, there were protests in the streets, and some were anti-american as we were bombing Bosnia at the time. We were a bit afraid to go out until the concierge at our hotel told us that there is almost always some sort of large protest going on ... nothing unusual. While we were there (5 days) we saw 4 different protests with riot police, etc. The current protests seem to be a bit more serious, however.

People who don't have to work for a living have time to "protest things".
