Hi!

I keep reading how you can rent points cheaper than staying in a moderate resort, and I am all about trying a dvc - any dvc accomodation! But when I calculate points, it comes out much more than I am paying for POR. What am I missing?

We are staying November 18 - December 2. Yes, Thanksgiving is in there, I know. Can anyone show me a possibility of renting points close to what we are paying for this trip? We have a night at value season rates, $149,12/1 "Fall Rate" at $165/night, 11/18-11/25, and Thanksgiving Rate $175/night 11/26-11/29, all standard view. We do have the AAA discount, but no other codes. We are doing the dining plan one last time, in the future, we might not. Our total package, for two adults, 1 child and 1 infant, with tickets and dining is $4229. I am really confused about all this. Anyone want to spell it out for me? I know I can get tickets through undercover tourist, etc., and that I can get the dining plan separate with dvc.

Would love to "get" it! Help!:confused3

A lot of it depends upon when and where you want to stay at DVC. Studios during the slower weeks can be had for as low as 9 points per night while a studio for a Fri/Sat night can be 30 points per night or more. If you use a rental rate of $10-$12 a point, then you can get the 9 point studio for as low as $90 per night which is cheaper than even the value resorts...and you are getting a deluxe resort with DVC.

Now...are you likely to get a studio for $9/point ?? ..no...but an SSR studio for the weeks you are looking for can be had in the 12-17 point range for Sun-Thurs or $120-$170 which is very much in the moderate resort price range.

Keep in mind that if you are looking for Fri/Sat weekend stays, you will not save a lot of money with DVC, but a 12 night vacation beginning on Sunday and ending on Friday can be very reasonable with DVC...you just need to study the point charts and plan accordingly.

what kind of room are you tring to fiq. w/ points? and what resort and how much a point is the member renting the points to you?

Studio:
OKW: 176 points
Beach club: 225 points

Dining: $1204 (2A + 1J + 1 Infant)
Tix (annual pass since you'll be there for more than 10 days and I don't know how many days you got from AAA) = $477.12 x 2 + $420.68 = $1365 (rounded up)

So if you get OKW for $11pp = $1936
Plus dining and annual passes = $4505

So yeah, I don't think you can do it less than the AAA cost.
But then again you get to stay at a Deluxe level resort for 2 weeks instead of moderate for an extra $276.
If you get the points for $10 instead of $11 you'll pay $176 less.

If you're staying at anywhere else you'll be paying even more because of the higher points/night.

You can always separate your stay, if you want to experience DVC.
Use half POR and half DVC resort. Only do dining on the non DVC resort (since you'll have a kitchenette you can have quick bfasts in the room).
That'll drive your cost down.

if im reading the correctly, you are staying 14 nights for about 2400.00 plus tax? (room only)

you are staying on fri/sat night - bad for DVC points

okw studio
Nov 18 - 8 points
Nov 19 - 8
Nov 20 - 8
Nov 21 - 21 (fri)
Nov 22 - 21 (sat)
Nov 23 - 8
Nov 24 -8
Nov 25 - 8
Nov 26 - 11
Nov 27 - 11 (thankgiving)
Nov 28 - 27 (fri)
Nov 29 - 21 (sat
Nov 30 - 8
Dec 1 - 8
so 176 points

which would be anywhere from $1,760 to $2,464 - depending upon who you rent from.

now since this includes Thankgiving week - these weeks are long gone - doesn't mean a cancelation might happen - but never count on it.

next year in Dec - get your Thanksgiving week - that is the only way to be sure to get a Holiday - 11 months before hand.

if you were only staying Sun-thurs (leaving on friday morning) for thanksgiving week - 46 points - so $460 to $644 for a holiday time at WDW just not the 2 weeks that you want.

never stay (okay they are exceptions) on points at a DVC resort on Friday or Saturday night. (sunday is fine)

Thank you for your replies. I will keep researching this for future trips. Someday I will make it happen!

And a standard view room for those dates is about 2600 bucks (without discounts), so even with the weekends you would potentially save a decent amount if you were able to find someone to rent points at the lower end.

yea but a standard room rented thru CRO - includes housekeeping.

dvc rentals do not!

Actually, members still get housekeeping, but it is limited. If you stay 7 nights or less, you get your towels replaced and your trash removed on day 4. If you stay 8 nights or more, you get a full cleaning on day 4, and your trash removed and towels replaced on day 8. Then the cycle repeats. If you want a daily full cleaning or your towels replaced daily or more frequently than the DVC schedule, you will have to pay for it.

What happens if you need new towels sooner? Can you just call for towels without a charge?

You wash them or you pay for them. I think its about $10 for a towel set.

Since DVC is a timeshare, limited towels and cleaning was a way to keep member maintenance fees lower. Most timeshares do not offer daily clean towels or unlimited towels without a cost. I'm at a beachfront timeshare right now and we get one towel per sleeping space and we bring them twice during the week to be replaced. We empty our own trash here as well. Plus we get one pool towel per sleeping space for the week. No filled bins at the pool or the beach.
