Somebody is going to get hurt....

We rent scooters all the timed and love them. We do not have any disabilities. We just like renting them. They are fun, functional when we are tired or our son is tired at the end of the night etc... We drive carefully and respectfully and see nothing wrong with them. We switch off depending on who is tired etc... no big deal. I see more and more people who are not disabled renting them. It really helps with families with little ones who are too old for strollers but still young enough that they need to be carried when they are passing out on the walk back to the hotel. Carrying 50 pounds of dead weight when you are tired yourself is a nightmare.
Any way, if we are gonna talk about people who drive carelessly on scooters, then we should add the stroller crowd to that. I have gotten my feet run over so many times I cant even count by strollers, causing cuts and bleeding on my feet at times. And most of the time, I dont even get a sorry. So you cant just pick on us scooter people....:confused3

I think that for the most part, people are courteous. I try to give people with ECV's (and strollers and wheelchairs) a wide berth, because it can be a hassle to navigate through the crowds.

Someone on an ECV ran over DD's foot intentionally on her 4th birthday because they were trying to block people from getting around them (during the rush to Fantasmic after the fireworks). DD ended up in the first aid center, and the nurses there told me that if it ever happened again, and to get the plate number of the ECV (assuming it was a Disney rental), and report it to Guest Services.

My foot was run over by a gentleman (cough) driving an ECV at Disneyland. And when he reversed to get off my foot, he went forward (since he didn't quite know how it worked) -- making the pain excruciating.

"Oh sorry" was the last I saw of him. Me?

Out of work for three months
X-ray
MRI
Endless doctor's appointments
Physical therapy

If you don't know how to drive them, PLEASE -- don't.

And I truly am not trying to "start" anything, but ECVs are designed for one person. A small child co-riding on them adds weight, subtracts awareness and reaction time. They are not meant to carry two people. And they are even more dangerous when used in such a manner. Strollers work great for tired children.

HAving my 6 year old sit on my lap in the ECV works just fine for us and doesnt cause any issues. It's not that hard to drive a scooter with a child on your lap. It's not dangerous.

I had an interesting situation coming out of Flo's last week. I was going out the far right double door, and when I pushed it open, there was some guy in a motorized scooter sitting outside right in front of the double doors! So, when I was inside and pushed the door to go out, I smacked him but good. He got all mad at me, but geez! It's not like I knew he was there, and who parks themselves on the outside of an exit??????????????? :crazy2::crazy2:

You're not serious, right? Sarcasm is not blatantly obvious on the internet. Yours is just subtle enough to seem like you actually mean this. Right? Right? FTLOG please tell me this isn't for real.

Well played! This one is more obvious. Excellent satirical commentary.

Perhaps Disney should install traffic lanes and signals for ECV's.

It seems like on one of my last DIS or WDW trips this forum had people recommending that others rent a wheelchair or scooter for one person in the group for the sole purpose of the group cutting in lines?

I never thought about dangers from them but I don't like someone renting one for convenience and then using it for line-shortening purposes, as if they can't stand in line like the rest of us. Or to grab a F! spot in back like the rest of us.

uh...are you serious? Please tell me this is an attempt to get a rise and not really true.:worried:

Myself and my daughter usually rent 1 to share as I have back" and other health issues and she although young (in her 20's) and healthy looking has a heart issue. We normally trade off and the one not riding pushes the stroller. We normally do not use the handicap ride entries and mainly just get from land to land and park them.
I have to say I feel very uncomfortable on one as I feel I am being judged by some. I can imagine my poor young healthy "looking" daughter feels this too.

This trip coming up I have invited my sis who has lupus (she has very painful legs) to join us. We have decided to rent 3 as I am recovering from surgery and will not be able to share so much. We will have 2 7 yr olds with us and will not have a choice but to lap them land to land or lose them in the crowds. We however NEVER allow steering.
We do our best to drive safe and stay at crowd speed. I am sure many don't. My main complaint I have had in the past is that I always make sure there is plenty of room in front of my scooter and people walking in front of me (in case they stop short) and even though I have paced the scooter to their walking speed people will funnel in around me on both sides and get in front of me because there is a space and they assume I am being slow....grrrr this is so annoying and I have more then a few times almost hit them. PLEASE think everyone.

Why in the heck would I not be serious??? We know tons of families who rent scooters like us. It's become very popular. Do you have a problem with that???

Hey Mabel67!! Yoohoo! I'm serious. I dont know why you think I am trying to be funny. We rent scooters. What is the big deal?

That's not right. We never use it to get ahead in lines or anyting like that. We park it and get in line like everyone else. We use it for convenience not to cheat anyone.

it came across that way
if you read the rental agreement - you agree to not have lap kids
more people are getting hurt & hurt worse from people who don't know how to drive them (catch that one that was out of work for 3 months?? that is gettimg more common not just out of the blue)
too many abusers on them - something is going to have to be done - I think a driving test should be done for all (just waiting for the lawsuits to start happening - you know it will)

you may not be one that abuses them but watch how others behave on them & you will see what we mean

I don't think that the beauty of the parks were designed to accomidate your kind of 'convenience'. It's already really too much - the amount of strollers that block off so much of the small details like many flower beds or entrances to attractions.

To each their own, but if I was having trouble walking to the parks.. I'd be moving my body to walk a mile, two or three daily to build up the endurance before our vacation. That combined with the many places to sit and rest in DLR seems like a reasonable alternative then sitting on a put-put to walk from here to there. If you don't push your body to walk it, then you will never be able to walk it.

actually we dont rent from disneyland because of their strict rules. most people we know rent from across the street at the scooter rental store next to ramada. And there will always be people who abuse everything. If it's not scooters it will be something else. And honestly I gotta say that Ive gotten more hurt from people running over me and my kid with their strollers than scooters. what are we gonna do about them?

Ummm, we dont have "trouble" walking to the parks . You might want to try not to assume things you know nothing about. We are all very fit people actually, who exercise at home on a daily basis and are very athletic. I weigh 110 pounds at 5'4". But we like to kick back and relax on vacation and we have a right to do it. If you have a problem with attractions being blocked off why dont you try to ban strollers. LOL!!

Anyone have any questions as to why I and others like me might feel uncomfortable riding the scooters even though we need them after reading this page.... uggg
