Some thoughts on Photoconnect

I had a hard time finding recent info on Photoconnect before our trip, so I thought I'd post what I learned this past week.

We bought Photoconnect because we've always liked using Photopass at WDW. I knew ahead of time, based on what I found here, not to expect the same level of service or nearly as many photos as we get in WDW. But both the UG and the threads here indicated that there were enough opportunities for photos that I thought the prepurchase was worth it. I was particularly looking forward to the Simpsons Couch Gag opp, as well as Spider Man and the Raptor Encounter.

Alas, the UG was outdated. The Simpsons couch gag photo op, the primary reason I wanted to do Photoconnect, isn't there anymore. The clerk at the Quik-E-Mart looked at me like I was insane when I asked about it.

We also realized in short order that several of the photo opportunities are in the standby lines of certain rides -- if you use Express Pass, you will not encounter them. Of course, we could have gone through the standby lines to get the photo ops, but we made the decision to use our time elsewhere.

In addition, just because a photo op is supposed to/normally has a Photoconnect photographer available does not mean that they will actually have one available. I asked at Raptor Encounter, and was told that they should have a photographer there, but they weren't sure when he'd arrive (this was mid-day). He hadn't shown by the time our turn came.

Finally, the system was unreliable and even when there were opportunities to get photos, they often didn't work. Our MIB ride photo disappeared, as did the photo of my son on Elliot's bicycle, and they were not recoverable. Our Spider Man shots went to my account with a plain green screen; I had to make a special trip to the park before our flight to have it fixed (and I'm glad I checked my account before we left!)

All in all, I can't say that the prepurchase is worth the time and money we spent on it. In fact, by the end of the first day, I was ready to request a refund, as we didn't get a single shot. We did eventually get enough photos we liked that we didn't seek a refund, but I don't think I'd buy it again unless we were doing a long trip and were prepared to focus significant attention on chasing down those photo ops.

Even though you did some pics, I would have asked for at least a partial refund

We used it over a four day trip and got a pretty good deal (60-something dollars for five days?). We also stopped for almost every photo opportunity that we saw. We ended up with about 30 pictures total. So, while it was nice to get those pictures for roughly $2 each, I agree that it is definitely an area where the Universal experience is much different than the Disney experience. I'd guess during four days at Disney we would easily have a couple hundred pictures.

We are going again in August after a trip in March where we got 3 days of photoconnect. If I knew that I was going back, I would have gotten the year pass which didn't cost much more. Disney definitely has the better photo program with better value for your money.

In March, we did as many as we could. I agree that it's annoying that some opportunities are in the standby line. Also if you don't know there's a photo opportunity, you miss it. On a previous trip, we had no idea about the photo ops at ET. This time we got photos on the bike and in the closet. I didn't know there was one at MIB until I read this post!

Also some photographers made us do poses with our hands so they could add characters. When we downloaded our photos, many didn't have anything in our hands. Theses photos look stupid now.

Lastly, it's my understanding that if you buy a 3 day pass, it has to be used on consecutive days. So, for us, if we decide to stay at the resort for a day, we need to make sure that we plan it well as we may loose a day of photos. image.jpeg image.jpeg

Those characters aren't added automatically... You need to make a stop at the PhotoConnect location in either park before you leave for the day in order to have the characters added to the photos. Or you can log in to your account online and add them yourself at any time! You can also add borders to photos that don't have them!

Oddly some had them! I'll go online and see if I can add some on those that don't have them. With Disney, they were all added.

We bought a 3 day photoconnect, and after day 1, we had 3 pictures, no other locations "worked." They did give my wife a full refund, and we got to keep our 3 pictures. It might have been the only disappointing part of our trip.

Someone else posted that you can get a photographer to take several shots. You just need to ask him/her to walk around with you.

I had read that and was on the lookout, especially in the Simpsons area. Unfortunately, we only ran into one photographer at loose in the park; she was at IOA and made it clear that I was imposing on her greatly when I asked her to take a photo of me and my son. After the rudeness I got for asking her to take one shot without having to walk a single step, there was no way I was asking her to follow me anywhere.

Yikes!!!!

I wish Universal would do their own photography instead of having another company do it.

This sounds pretty disappointing. My family for the 3 day "Star Card" in Spring of 2014 and felt we got a lot of good pictures out of it. All the on-ride pictures, plus the Simpsons couch, ET, Spongebob store, High in the Sky Trolley queue picture, some roaming photographers, and others I don't remember. It was cheaper than it is now but we felt it was worthwhile.

I have pre-purchased the 3 day photoconnect package for our trip in August to save a few dollars, since it turned out well for us previously. However I guess we'll need to keep our eyes wide open to see if it turns out to be a good value during the first day. I'm glad to hear than some people who haven't felt it was a good value were able to get a refund. If the value has gone down for us on this coming trip, I may keep that option in mind.

Was thinking of getting photoconnect for our quick (2 day) trip since the adults haven't been in a decade and it will be the kids first time. Now that I know many of the photo ops are in standby lines, I need to rethink this ... We opted for EPs (by staying onsite) to maximize our time.

Question, for the photo ops in standy, are they cloase to the ride entrance, more in the middle of the line or closer to the boarding area? (In other words, is it possible to get the standby area photos relatively quickly/easily/unobtrusively and then leave the line without being a nuissance to other guests! I'm thinking probably not, but it never hurts to ask.)

I had no idea there were photo ops in standby lines. Are they just for those who've purchased a package or can anyone use them?

Same here. Can the OP tell us what rides had photo ops in the standby lines?
Not OP, but I recall offhand that there's a photo op in the Spidey queue. Not sure about others. Someone earlier mentioned MIB, but I'm only aware of the ride photo on that one... I haven't ever noticed a queue photo.

What a bummer that some of you didn't get the best experience possible from the my Universal photo Card :(
It really is a good product (full disclosure I sell them all day). First I am sorry to the poster that felt she was imposing on the photographer, you are always welcome to ask for photos to be taken anywhere. Universal has so many cool spots, many of them hidden that make great photo ops and most of the photographers love taking the opportunity to shoot those!!
I didn't read anyone mention that you get 2 print's along with all of your digital photos (nice perk).
I guess it makes a difference who you buy from.
I have a LOVE for the product because I use my card on myself and my own family (a lot!) so I know when my customers walk away I want them not only be happy but 100% educated about the product.

Hi...can you explain My Universal Photo a bit more. I am confused about the digital downloads. Is this something we get to keep forever and view when we return home.

I have a section in the Quick Access Links sticky on my universal photo
