I started my "Diet" yesterday. I am trying to cut fat and calories and drink lots of water and exercise (walk).

I about caved in last night and had a piece of ice cream cake left over from a birthday party on the weekend, but I stayed strong and had an apple instead. (Man it was tough, all I could think of was ice cream cake, ice cream cake, ice cream cake)

So anyways - under what amount of calories should I try and stick to per day?? How many grams of fat???

I really want to lose 30 pounds (would have liked to do it by our trip, is that reasonable to lose 10 pounds per month???)

TIA

Melinda

Hi Piglet,

Congrats on not letting the ice cream cake win! We are stronger than our food! It's tough though!

As far as your diet is concerened, 10 pounds a month is probably unrealistic. Not impossible though. I have lost 15 pounds in the last 6 weeks, and could possibly loose another 15 pounds in the next 6 weeks. You would have to really stick to your guns and try not to cheat. That doesn't mean you have to skimp on what you eat. Read my post from today about being amazed at what I eat while loosing.

Remember that you didn't put on the 30 pounds overnight , so you want to loose it by eating healthy and making this a lifestyle change and not a diet.

What about Weight Watchers. It allows you to cut your fat and calories, while showing you how to portion control. When you are done with what you should have in a day you stop. Let me know if you want more information.

Good luck, and again..............way to go on not eating the cake!

Good for you for resisting that cake! I bet you woke up feeling very proud of yourself today, and think of how much you would have beat yourself up if you had caved in. It's all about control, and you are the one who controls what goes into your body. GOOD FOR YOU!

Fat is important to your diet, so I think it's safe to say you should consume a minimum of 20% of your calories from fat per day (I am not a nutritionist, this is just what I have picked up through reading). Of course that number will vary every day, so don't have a cow if you eat %30 or more of your calories from fat on certain days, that's just how life goes sometimes.

Try eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads instead of white bread, oatmeal for breakfast, lean meats, etc. :) Good luck and take it easy. Being fit for life is a great goal, so try not to rush through the weight loss too fast, it can be very frustrating if you rely too much on what the scale has to say. Listen to your body and feed it healthy food, move around alot and exercise, and drink that water! :)

Piglet, I am a firm believer of writing everything down that you eat. So, I use Fitday every day. It tracks my weight, my food, my exercise. There is lots there, and it's worth a trip over. Good luck with your goal! ONward and DOWNward you go!
