We just got back from our week long trip on Saturday. Had no problems with my special needs son, GAC worked well for us and CM's were accomodating and helpful.

But I tell you what, some people should really be ashamed of themselves. We were getting off of a ride and a man more then loudly says "I can't believe that woman would take her son to Disney World like that". It really hurt my feelings! Just because he is in a brace and is special needs means he shouldn't get to enjoy Disney just like everyone else? SIGH.

some people really have special needs-
:rolleyes1 that man had a REALLY special need to be smacked!

It is so terrible that the human brain remembers the negative things more than the positives. I feel sorry for that man, and I really hope you are able to forget him and remember all of the positive things you got out of your time in Disney. Only a GREAT Mom would do what it takes to make sure her child had the best life, especially in the face of challenges! You are a wonderful Mom! Your family and son are so much better off because of you and your strength.

I am so, so sorry you had to deal with that. People are so ignorant and miserable. Even though your life may be harder you are a more compasionate and better person for it. I say ignore it. Your son has evry right to do anything he wants (esp visit Disney...they are so great with Special needs...our family has been going there for years because my brother who has cp absolutely loves it and feels like he can actually do things therelike buzz etc) and nothing or no one should stop you guys. You are a wonderful mother imo!

I am so sorry! What an ignorant jerk!

I wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut.

Thanks guys. I made it a point not to get upset about his comment because you know what... when I look at a picture like this..

.... I know it was all worth it!!!

there was an attitude until very recently that still persists that one should not allow those with disabilities to be seen in public, much as in victorian times children were not supposed to be seen... sadly, some people still have that feeling...

even worse, i am noticing a growing number of people who seen to lack that filter between mouth and brain. We all THINK rude comments (OMG, who let her out of the house in that dress!), but we don't SAY them.

good move just ignoring rude people... I generally do, and just enjoy my day!!

you should have felt sorry for him. the hours he must have spent practicing to be the biggest idiot at Disney

yeah, and to think he left the house with such a severe disability of his own (stupidity!) It's just very sad:sad2::sad2:

Seriously, well done you! I might have, ok, probably would have, completely lost it at that comment. The fact that you didn't ruin your childs day by a visit to security is a testament to your character.

Finally, your little guy is too cute! Love the pic w/ Mickey- talk about magic! and that's what the trip is all about.

 Don't let stupid people like that get to you. They aren't worth it.

Glad you had a great trip. And I love the picture of your son with Mickey. Too cute! :)

My attitude is that if it was not for ignorance I would not have near as much fun (laughing at it), it is his problem not yours. Glad your family had a good time at WDW.

Sorry it happened it's good not to acknowledge idiots in front of your son. If I were to see the idiot later in the day I would be tempted to run into him with my scooter (I never do that but I do think about it)

Thanks so much for the words of encouragement everyone. He has been in the brace for 9 months now and I am still not used to the stares and comments not only at Disney but everywhere we go. He used to have to wear it whenever he was awake but now just wears it about 6 hours a day so we were able to go out to the parks at night without the helmet... he still has a number of other issues but without the helmet at least he looks a little more "normal". We have another appointment with the specialist next month but we are still seeing problems so I just don't know what else they are going to suggest.... he's only 2 but has spent more then half his life in some sort of helmet or brace and I don't know how much longer it's going to last. Sorry for the vent but i'm so glad for the ability too.

You were a good momma by not responding. There are times you want to say things but remember that it is the kid's day out and day to be normal and free of all limitations. I would have asked the dude what clothing he thought I should have dressed the kid as since that is what I would assume when someone says that remark.

Big hugs to a great mommy and remember you make magic happen for your kids. Very special mom indeed.:thumbsup2:hug::hug:

I'm sorry you had to hear that.

Some people suck. They should keep their comments to themselves (or look in the mirror!)

My Emma is in a wheelchair, wears glasses, and has foot braces and we take her to DW every chance we get. She loves it there and we love seeing her there.

That was just a bad experience ppl need to remember everyone is special in their own way and that everyone specially little kids deserve the right to be happy and make their dreams come true. :wizard: Great job on ignoring that man:thumbsup2. I am very proud of you and your inner strength. I absolutely love the picture with Mickey it is worth a million smiles:cloud9::hug:. Kids make a difference in everyone's life some ppl just don't know how to react to it.

I'm so sorry. I know how that feels as I have heard people comment negatively about people getting on the bus with WC or ECV...like they aren't going to get to the park  Mom hates to be in the WC when we go because she thinks it's a hassle doe everyone else :sad2:

I think it's wonderful that you all went and that pic is priceless!

That pictures is awesome!!!!! :thumbsup2

When people stare at Ryan (he has Down syndrome) I usually look at them and say "cute isn't he??" So I don't say anything rude. I just let them know that I noticed them being rude.

None of you deserved to hear that! Dont let people like that get to you! They are the ones with the problem and are not worth your thinking one more second about! You are a great mom! :grouphug:

Wow. You held it together really well. I wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut and as for my DH, no way! lol..I would have said, "My son can't go out without his brace, but apparently you go out without your manners regularly."

Your son is too, too cute. That photo is precious!
