Some one explain the exit to DTD through GCH

I have read it before and can't seem to find it again.
There is an exit you can go through (a short cut) to get to Down Town Disney through the GCH.
Can someone explain it for me or direct me please?

It is located near the entrance for the GRR ride. It is a great shortcut.

It's not this one...it's a "secret" one. That exits by a bakery.
You can't re-enter it but it's a short cut out to DTD.

Never heard of it. I think you are getting it confused with something else.

I've never used it but I believe that if you have a DTD view room there's a staircase you can take that will save you a bunch of steps and lets you out by the La Brea Bakery.

Because it's a staircase, it's not really helpful if you have a stroller or ECV. And yes, you can exit at DTD but it's locked on the outside so you're not going to re-enter that way.

Ok, yes that is the way I was thinking it was. I just didn't know the details of how to use that exit. I think we can figure it out once we get there.

It the fire escape for the east wing rooms. The rooms that are above The World of Disney. You have to book a Theme Park View or a DTD View room though to have a chance of getting on that wing. The bell hop will point it out for you if you ask!

edit... I found a map... The exit is between the 447's and the 449's. Actually people in some of the 300's may find that exit usefull too. Also I err'ed earlier, the odd number rooms from 401-417 are not DTD or TP views I think those are garden views but would definately benefit from the exit. Oh BTW... It's not very "magical" in the fire escape.

*Just* a DTD view will not guarantee you access. Well, not easy, time-saving access. Our room was right across from Naples, but we were in room 5-165, so that's the wing to the left (in the picture) of the wing where it's accessible. A very very very frustrating wing/room to be in, let me tell you!

And even the housekeeping CMs don't necessarily know of the secret exit, not even the higher up one we asked!

My dad found this exit when we were staying there the last week in August. We were on the 3rd floor and it was great for us! I sure wish we could have gotten back in that way too...

Actually, we've had a standard room at the GCH and have used that staircase. Its open to anyone.

Its easy to find (see the above map) and take the stairs until they end. ITS GREAT for getting to the park entrances. The only drawback - you can't go up (the door locks behind you) so if you are in that wing its a quick walk to get to the parks, but you have to walk all the way back to the main entrance and then backtrack back through the hotel to get back to your room.

Not sure if this is the thread I learned about this or not but thought I would offer some advice to those wanting to use this from the sixth floor - you can only access this stairwell from floors five and below. If you are on the sixth floor, you need to use an elevator to go down to another floor to use this exit - do NOT use another stairwell. If you do, there is a good chance you will be working with the hotel operator on how to set off the alarm as you leave the hotel, break in to California Adventure before they open, and then do the walk of shame with a security escort out. Fortunately, you wind up in the same place and the guard gets a good laugh out of it but it really doesn't save any time.

Slightly related: in 2010 we were waiting at the Grand's entrance to DCA and I realized I didn't have my birthday button. DH thought it was important enough (it was my actual b'day afterall) to go back and get it. He didn't even think, and left his lanyard with me. Got to the room, didn't have his roomkey. No problems, the maid's cart was there, in front of our open door, so he went on in. The maid came back in, to see him rustling through a woman's bag (mine). Asked who he was, he told her, but it was MY name on the room, and his name didn't come up in the quick check the housekeeper can make (the first time it's been a real problem that we dont' have matching last names!). He didn't have ID, even if his name was on it.

Security was called. He had to somehow prove who he was to security (can't remember how).

Meanwhile, we're sitting down in the breezeway wondering where on earth he was!

He finally showed up, embarrassed, but with a good story and a good lesson. Always bring your keycard and ID with you!

That's the best way to look at it - we certainly have a great story to tell when we get home....it really did give us a good laugh and it was hard to walk through Condor Flats without having a nice little chuckle
