Some of you may consider this tacky but...

I think it sounds like a great idea. Starting a business doing something you know is the best way to go!

How about: Carol's Cleaning Service? It has a nice ring to it. :)

Are you going to do residential, apartment and commercial or just one?

Or how about Zippy's Cleaning Service. Clean in a jiffy!

I don't think it is tacky at all. I actually thought of doing this myself, except I like my summers off. It's a great way to stay in shape too. I just want to mention that you might want to be bonded in case of breakage or if you are blamed for theft. You might want to post in the staff room of the schools -- all the teachers have housecleaners that I know.

I can understand that joy. In a totally strange way I use to enjoy cleaning others homes as well. When I was younger, I would clean the house of whomever I was babysitting for (while the kids were napping or asleep) My parents thought it was funny considering my cleaning habits weren't quite the same at home :o

LOL. Come on down to Alabama, and you will feel SO good after cleaning up my place! I have to make myself do it after a few days of pep talks.:) (and nagging the kids and DH)

If you live near Boston, you're hired here too :)

I see lots of posts for housecleaners in the laundrimat we go to.

Having someone clean our place twice a month is my major luxary. I'm actually looking for a self employed person. We use a service right now, and I just figured out how little of the money they charge goes to the people doing the cleaning. It feels completely exploitative.

p.s. $20/hr is pretty cheap here in the city. I used to pay $25 for the last person we hired, and I thought that was a bargain.

An honest day's work is respectable be it cleaning houses, riding the trash truck or anything else. You can get blank sheets of perforated paper (business card size) at any office supply store. I think places like Wal-Mart and Target carry it, also. There are generally instructions in there that make it very easy format your business card. You might find a clip art off the internet you like to put on there as well. To get started, just let people you know (besides us DISers!) that you are going to start this and you might be surprised how many people are interested or know people who are. Also, (and you've probably already thought of this) you'll probably want to come and inspect the person's house before you set a rate. Around here, most housekeepers have a flat rate, not hourly, so they generally want to see how big the house (and the mess) is before they quote a rate.

Good luck! Hope you do well with this!

Our neighborhood has an electronic bulletin board. There are always posts from people looking for a good housecleaner. Ask people in the neighborhoods to which you'd be willing to travel if they have such a thing. In addition, our neighborhood association has a newsletter in which folks advertise. I tend to pay more attention to those ads (which are cheap) than those in the newspaper. Also, our office has an electronic bulletin board where people look for housecleaners. Find out who in your neighborhood uses a cleaning "service" and either call them or put a flyer on their door... folks who use services are often unhappy with them (they can be more expensive and they often send a different person every week [we dropped ours after they sent a convicted felon to our house]). Some PTA directories, school play programs, etc., accept ads. People tend to trust those because they're from someone in their own neighborhood. Good luck! In the years when my kids were babies/toddlers, if anyone asked me what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas, I always said "Someone to clean my house!"

One more thing...ask around a lot to find out the going rate...don't be too cheap. The lady who cleans our house charges $80, which works out to about $23 per hour (we pay her in cash, so it could be tax free for all I know). My niece is cleaning a neighbor's house and was so proud that she is getting $10 per hour...she should be charging twice that much.

One other thing.. I knw all of you are really creative thinkers, so how about a catchy name for my housecleaning business?

And do you know if there is someplace that I can buy blank business cards that I could run through my computer printer?

Thanks all - you've REALLY given me some encouragement here!!

How about a take off on one of the chains like "Happy Housecleaners" or "Sparkling Cleaners". As for business cards all the office supply stores have them. If you're willing to spend a little extra go for the magnetic ones. I know that would go on my frig if for no other reason than DD likes to play with them. At least it would keep it out of a draw and maybe having it starring at them would attract potential clients.

If you are remotely close to boston I'd so hire you. I hate cleaning and my house is a mess. You can also post on Craigslist.com It's Free.

Come on down!! I'd hire you!! Once you get a couple clients and they see how wonderful you are, then word of mouth will have your phone ringing off the hook! ::yes::

Gee whiz - doesn't anyone in upstate New York need a housecleaner?

Hmmmmm..too bad I couldn't fly all over the country..;)

Can someone tell me how I go about getting bonded?

I was also thinking of advertising somehow for landlords who have tenants move out and and want the place cleaned before others see it.. Of course I would have to charge more because that could entail some heavy-duty cleaning!

And you're not going to believe this but......I stopped at a garage sale on my way up here to the lake and guess what the FIRST thing I spotted was? One of those carriers for all of your cleaning supplies! Only 50 cents, so I grabbed it!! :)

Anybody that thinks that is tacky is an idiot.

Two of my neighbors did this when I was in Houston. They didn't want to commute into downtown. They made more money and had control over their time.

My sister has someone who cleans her house and she is a terrific lady and a friend to us both. I would never allow anyone to call her tacky.

How about White Glove Treatment Cleaning Service?

How upstate is upstate NY? My niece lives in Mt. Kisco.

C.Ann, I think it is an awesome idea! I took on a second job cleaning out new construction homes a few years back...played my music, no one bothering me...it was really nice. I will mention this, at the risk of getting flamed....I would suggest printing that you speak ENGLISH on your info! I do not have a cleaning person/service, but most of my neighbors do, and if there is 1 thing they all wish were better, it is that they could communicate better! You will be very successful!

Just so you know....even out here in NH, people get $35/hr and up for cleaning! I had a girl who cleaned for me for about a year, every other week, just a few hours.... she was paid $20/hr which was really a bargain. My DD's best friends Mom cleans houses and weekly rental cottages on the lake.... I know she gets AT LEAST $35/hr.

To find out about insurance, call the company that holds your homeowners policy to start and see what they say. I wouldn't do it without being insured.... you never know when you might have butterfingers while polishing an antique vase! Hope it works out well for you.... I think word of mouth will be your best option for starting out. My DH thought that this would be a fine way for me to go back into the workplace after being a SAHM for the past 9 years, but I was quick to inform him (or maybe remind him) what a lousy housekeeper I am!.....................P

My sil (my brother's wife) cleans houses too. It's just by word of mouth. She's done it all, selling baskets, day care. But she's always been a neat freak. So when she gave up baskets, her mom knew an elderly couple who she knew needed someone to clean their house for them. She told her she ought to give it a try and it just grew from there. My mom has hired cleaning ladies for years and when the last one quit (put herself through college), my sil started cleaning for her! Added bonus, grandkids can go to grandma's house! LOL! Grandma's at work, but grampy is there! Good luck with it!

Go for it!

My dream is to be able to hire someone to clean my house so I wouldn't have to spend precious time off doing it. I work very long hours (as assistant to a CEO). I was surprised to learn that several of my co-workers (admin assistants like me) use cleaners! What a luxury!

I mentioned the possibility to DH and he poo-pooed the idea, but evidently he must have been worried because the next day I got home and the house was sparkling clean - and he had done it himself! Ha.

Good luck.

Another thing you can do is to go to all the local apartment managers to try to get their "make ready" work (cleaning up after people move out). If you like a challenge, that would be it! I've heard that the pay is good but that you can get real messes.

Around here they put the magnetic business cards on our mailboxes or they put a flyer in a plastic bag with a pebble and throw it on our driveways. We pay about $75 to $85 a cleaning for around 2500 sq ft homes in this area. They usually come and give an estimate. First time cleanings always cost more. Sometimes it is a little more if you only want them to come every other week.

C.Ann, even if someone thinks it's tacky, would you please come and be 'tacky' at my house?!?! :p

At www.vistaprint.com you can get 250 FREE cards printed, plus $4.99 shipping.

Best Wishes!!!
