After reading a bunch in the archives (gotta love it when that "search" function works!) I still have a few questions about the Fort Wilderness Cabins:

1. How close are the cabins to each other? Can you get "adjoining" cabins for large groups?

2. How close are the cabins to campsites if one group wants a cabin and the others want to camp?

3. How do you get to the boat that takes you to the MK? Is it close enough to walk or do you drive your car?

We're trying to decide where to stay for our next trip. DH and I both love the look of the cabins, but it's hard to justify the extra $$ when we have two adjoining suites at HIFS reserved for only $89/night each. THe cabins are almost twice that and I have to make my own - and the rest of hte family's - breakfast!

We have been to the Cabins a couple of times and enjoyed them very much. They are about the distance apart as most residential houses(15-20 ft?). I think there are some campsites close to them.
Staying at a Disney "Resort" to me is a better expirence than a Hotel or Motel and to me worth the price. Disney's Hotels are Resorts within themself's and a different expirence for each. The Fort Wilderness Campground is spread out and there is a lot to do there that HIFS does not have to offer. I know its a tough choice.

Each loop has a lot of cabins, so, you could probably get a loop closer to a campsite if you needed to. They do not adjoin, but they are fairly close to each other. Our cabin slept 6, although 2 of the beds are doubles, with a set of bunks. The bottom bunk was tight, though. My youngest DD slept there and she was only 3 then, but I couldn't have gotten in there !!!!

There is nowhere to park a car by Pioneer Hall, which is near the boat dock. You take buses throughout the resort. There used to be two loops, one Chip, the other Dale and each went a different place. I don't know if that has changed or not. It was fairly easy to get around though.

The convience of staying onsite is really great though, and usually worth the extra money!!

Good luck!!

You can request adjoining cabins. I've seen other families have 3 or 4 for reunion trips.

A good loop to request if some are camping in trailers is 2100. That backs up to the regular 1100 camping loop. The campers could request that one.

As others have said you will use internal transportation to get to the boat dock to go to the MK. Taking the ferry is one of my favorite things to do at WDW. The cabins are at the other end of the campground from Pioneer Hall and the marina. And remember if you have time, sometimes it's fun to take the launch to the Contemporary, and monorail to the MK or transfer at the TTC to go to Epcot.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think they helped me make up my mind that the cabins probably aren't for us. We avoid the buses at WDW and if we have to use the buses, forget it. DH and I are outnumbered by little ones (DD4, DS2 and DD4mo) and we aren't willing to tempt fate by trying to take all 3 of them on!

Can you please let me know how did you get the rate of $89 a nite at HIFS? We currently have $120 a nite with a senior citizen rate (Grandpa is going with us). I thought that was the best we could do.

Thanks.

Dijid, I agree with you on the buses. We have 4 DD's (1,3,4,5) and we avoid the buses as well. I think we are going to stay at the cabins next year though. I figure we will take the boat to MK (the girls favorite), and they have the ferry kind that we can just roll the stroller on. Then for the other parks we will do just like we did at the Polynesian TAKE THE CAR. We go in January and find it SO easy to drive to the parks, since you don't have to pay for parking. This way if the kids freak out we are the only ones who have to endure the noise! I've always been interested in HIFS though, I hear they are terrific, we are just too spoiled staying on site. But for the rate you got, it is almost a no brainer!

Have fun on your trip!!

christine, just want to make sure you know that you still have to take a bus to get to the MK boat. :) You can walk, but it's far. Very far. You can walk from the campsites, but not the cabins.

The good thing about the internal FW busses is that they run frequently. They weren't very crowded in September, and I'd think January would be similar.

ChessMom - call HIFS and see if an Entertainment Card rate is available for your dates. We're staying off season (mid-May) and were able to get the rate for two rooms. You must present your card when you check in.

cmcvean - If you can handle trips with your 4 DD's - you give me hope that we'll manage with our 3. This will be our first trip since adopting #3 and we're a bit nervous about being outnumbered.

Gillian, wow I didn't know that! I'm just now researching the cabins. I was thinking we would rent one of the golf carts. Although I wonder if we could all fit in one... 2 adults 4 little ones?

dijid, Oh you will do fine!! We have so much fun, and even when the kids weren't the greatest, we just learned to work around their moods and keep them fed and rested then it all seemed to come together!

The key is to get up EARLY and get to the parks first thing, you can get so much done without the long lines! Just make sure you have a stroller for all of them. We would rent a second when we got to the parks, the key is to be able to contain them at times so they all aren't running in different directions! Plus even the older ones need some down time.

Have a GREAT time!

Christine
