I have absolutely sent my husband to reserve a few chairs for like 30-60 minutes while the rest of us straggle down (because it is a competitve struggle for prime view chairs) but it seems like there has to be a limit to how many chairs a single person can hold for so long...One day I was looking for a chair on the beach with at least a partial view of the water and found an empty one but as I went to sit on it the person next to me said they were saving it for [family member] and I said "I only have about 30 minutes until I need to leave for lunch, do you think they'll be back?" and they were actually very friendly and encouraged me to stay. While reading my book, I overheard part of that group on a phone call with another part of their group clearly establishing that that party was holding additional chairs elsewhere by the pool and trying to decide how to keep the beach chairs while they went to join the pool chair group. Oy. I left for lunch before they resolved which way they were going.I was definitely down before 7am to ensure prime seating after learning the game during our first trip. I smiled when I snagged prime seating before a grandparent (whose family took over an entire section the day before) came down at 6:55 and became angry when he saw that myself and one other dad roped off 8 seats between us.
I only reserved 4 chairs, even though we had 6 in our group, because the odds of us all being at the chairs at the same time are were slim and for those brief moments someone could sit on the front and back of the chair.
I think if most people had some common courtesy it wouldn’t be an issue, but everything Disney seems to turn into a winner take all/hunger games mentality.
Thus my 3am wake up 90 days before the trip to book guaranteed seating for every day of the trip…. Stress neutralized.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they continue to section off additional locations for paid seating.
Unfortunately, there isn't a great/fair solution to the problem that doesn't involve either paying a lot more staff to police empty chairs (which will cause conflicts with guests when their stuff is missing) or simply reserving additional chairs for people willing to pay to avoid the stress (which makes extra money)-- I think we can all guess which one Disney is going to go with. I am willing to pay for less stress on vacation, but I wish they made a half-day option (like many other resorts do)-- it double the capacity for people who want to avoid the chair hog shuffle and they could probably get away with charging 60-70% for each half of the day... I would be surprised if that many people actually want to be out from 8-12 and 12:30-4:30 most days.
