Sometimes Disney customer service still sets an amazing standard.

Family and I arrived yesterday at noon, to check into our Kidani one bedroom standard view. We got our keys and parking pass and headed out to the parks. I was somewhat surprised to have not received the text about room being ready by 6pm.

At 6:30p, the manager at the Kidani front desk called me, and told me that someone had been smoking in our assigned room, so much that the crew couldn't get the scent out and they were putting the room out of service for a week.

The downside was this left us with no room and a sold out resort. The upside- the manager upgraded us to a hotel side two bedroom concierge level at Jambo! We lost our laundry capacity and full kitchen- but gained free concierge level, and of course a fantastic third floor Jambo savannah view. And wow, is that nice..

Also, they refunded us a night of points. Talk about exceeding expectations!

Moral of the story-in a bizarre way I have to thank some jerk for smoking in his DVC room. And hope he never does it again...

Wow, enjoy your concierge stay.

I completely understand your title, it's a good one.

They likely charged him, hopefully.

Happy for your good outcome and I agree with Dean. Sure hope they charged the smoker TO THE MAX!

OP, I'm glad you were pleased with the outcome. Good thing you didn't have a slew of groceries with plans to cook for your stay.

If the room is out of service for a week, the smoker should be billed for a week at rack rate. (Although I'm sure he/she won't be. But I hope he/she is billed something.)

That only happened to me one time when I was at BLT in a Studio lake view. I requested a high floor and lo and behold, I was given the top floor (floor 16) and when I went into the room, the smoke smell was terrible. I immediately called and they came to inspect, said they will clean the room adn when I went back, ti was not much better.

They gave me another room much lower (floor 6) and no points were refunded and no upgraded rooms size. I was pretty mad at the time as it was a great room that was ruined by a smoker.

I am glad they upgraded you and comped you points.

They can really only charge the stated fine. Also, it's not necessary to take the room out of service a week, that's the lazy way out. What they should do, and likely will have to do anyway, is to do a full allergy cleaning. Steam clean or replace every piece of upholstery in the villa.

A few years back we were staying at Jambo, and there was a ruckus in the lobby. A couple had been smoking in the room. They were scheduled to stay a few more days but Disney, politely but firmly told them they had broken the rules and must leave immediately. They were not happy of course, but in the end they left. Not sure what they were charged for smoking, or if Disney refunded the remainder of their visit, but what a bummer way to mess up a great vacation!

I know of similar circumstances related to occupancy with others timeshares. A 2 hour warning to get under the limit and when they didn't, they were asked to leave. I wish DVC would take occupancy as seriously as well.

Well as long as you were happy with the outcome, that's all that really matters. And it's nice to hear that DVC/Disney did the right thing about the room!

I personally think you've got to do both... the full allergy cleaning, perhaps twice. I'm not even sure if the week is enough withougt multiple cleanings.

If they clean it right and remove the curtains, spread's, etc; this type of cleaning done once should be enough. It's no ast if someone had been smoking there for years where it would be into the wood, etc and that's a different issue.

I know you are happy but that would have been hard for us. We plan on doing laundry and pack accordingly. Not having the washer/dryer in the room would have caused us major issues.

It would have been hard for us too, in addition to packing knowing there's a washer in the room; we also eat a lot of meals in the room. No kitchen would not have worked for us. I'm glad it made your trip better.

Although I hope they did, I have a feeling the actuality is more likely "they threaten to, but…." similar to what happened to me once. They had a sign at that time that if you took the cord for the internet, they'd charge you $10 for it (at OKW). Well, I was doing a split stay, and when I got to my next stop and unleaded by laptop, there was the cord, still attached. I quick called over to OKW in a panic, "Please don't charge me, I promise to return it right now." The nice CM said "Oh, don't worry, we threaten to charge but in actuality, we've never charged anyone." I know that's just a cord, not smoking, but I'm afraid the actuality may be the same. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think you're wrong! But I don't think we'll see a thread that boasts, " Stole/Destroyed Something From My Resort & Didn't Get Charged!" And I doubt the culprit in this case got charged anything either!
