Some interesting info for visually impaired WDW guests...

At both DCA and AK the one thing that gets to me is Bug's Life. You have to go down into a dimly lit waiting area with low ceilings and cacophony surrounding you. The noise is one of the few that triggers my SID. I stay near the walls so that I avoid a very rare bout of claustrophobia. It is very very rare for me to even come close to that phobia but that place does. The dim lighting is not fun when you come in from a bright day and for a while you have to adjust to the dim lighting.

Love the shirt idea.

It's sad that sometimes even the white cane doesn't help with the rude comments/actions... but I digress.

Sadly, I think one of my worst encounters was at Epcot more than 10 yrs ago. I didn't have a cane with me and I was walking around World Showcase with a friend of mine. It wasn't crowded at all and I was able to get around easily that day. As I went to step up a curb, a child came "out of nowhere" (those with RP understand this I'm sure!) and I tripped right over them, causing me to fall (the child was unharmed). The parent came over and literally yelled at me. At that point I was just in shock. My friend stood up for me though, telling the parent that they should watch their kid and keep them from running out in front of people. I spent the rest of the trip with a giant bruise. Ugh!

I know those situations too well with my mother who has RP. It actually happened at Typhoon Lagoon. A child ran out in front of her, cutting her off, and of course my mom didn't see her. My mom ended up stubbing her toe on the rocks we were crossing (barefoot at Typhoon, crossing one of their bridges) and it was broken for the rest of the trip.. on our second day!

PS I am working on a list of queues/rides we had troubles with to post here, right now I'm done with AK/HS. I need to email it to my mom for her to look over and add what she remembers to be difficult. I'm going to work on MK/Epcot soon.

We had a seat at the aquarium level, and I booked her a diver to hold up a sign that said "Thanks for everything Mom! We love you!". She enjoyed the food and the atmosphere very much, but we wouldn't go back because of the lighting, and it was very noisy. It's definitely very cool to encounter once, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the diver, so that probably added to the excitement!

She was able to read the menu just fine, and I think I did read the note the diver held up for her, but mostly because I wasn't sure if she could make it or not. The pictures are with flash on, if that gives you indication for how dark it can be.

When I have some time this weekend I'll pull up maps of the different parks and note which queues and rides I remember giving us some navigation issues on and which ones you should skip with RP.

I have to say... I've never come across so many who are at least familiar with RP that wasn't a vision-specific site.

The next time I'm in WDW (Nov/Dec 09 - too far away!), I'll make a list and note the rides/attractions that caused problems for me.

For now, this is all I can remember:
- Pirates of the Caribbean was sooo much clearer at night due to already being in the dark. I saw so much more that I had never seen before. I'm going to try more rides at night on my next trip!
- All rides that went from outside to inside gave me problems in the queues, at least at the beginning until my eyes eventually adjust.
- Completely skip Swiss Family Robinson
