Some "hits"-and a few "misses"-at the Flying Fish

For our opening night dinner this trip, we chose the Flying Fish over at the Boardwalk. It had been a couple of trips since we last went, and that previous meal had fallen short in a few areas. Our PS were at 8:00 on Saturday nite and were we glad we had them. The Boardwalk was jumping!! More crowded than I've ever seen it in the past. There were lines at Big River Grille and the ESPN Club and the Fish was jam-packed also. In fact, no one w/o a PS was being admitted, and while we waited 15 minutes to be seated, we saw about a dozen parties w/o PS being turned away.
This made for some interesting attempts from those folks to try to get in anyway: one fellow told the hostess that he and his party were from "out-of -town". Well-that didn't work! Another guy told her that he and his party had "looked forward to dinner at the Fish all day". That didn't work either. Yet another fellow said he and his party would sit at the bar for as long as it took to get in. The hostess said that'd be OK--if there were any seats at the bar. Which there weren't!!
So the lesson is-certain restaurants on certain nites may just be unavailable w/o PS. It's why we always make them.
Well-on to the meal.
The first "miss" was our table--in what I call the "Cabana Room" way back and to the left in the restaurant. I imagine it's supposed to be like you're eating at the beach under an awning, but it really is cramped, crowded, and out of the entire mainstream of the FF. Sort of like being made to stand in the coatroom in school, when you misbehaved. Ordinarily I would have requested another table, but given the crowd that nite, we decided to go with the flow. After being seated, our server appeared promptly and asked for our drink order. That brought on the second "miss" of the nite--the Flying Fish Ale they used to carry is gone!! No longer available!! So that left little in the way of choice for me, and I wound up w/ Bass Ale on draft. Mrs. U went with the wine pairing suggestions on the menu, and was quite pleased with her selections.
The third "miss" came with the rolls they brought to the table. Last trip we got cold, hard, rye bread. I was hoping for better this time, but it was not to be. We got cold, hard, rolls. And just how hard WERE those rolls?? So hard that the two ladies seated right next to us were unable to break them in half w/o assistance!! I suggested using a saw, which promted much laughter all around--

For an appetizer Mrs. U and I decided to split the Oak carmelized dayboat Scallops, served w/ White bean salad, bacon and lemon vinaigrette. That brought on the 4th and final "miss" of the evening. The scallops were large and quite tasty--but there were only 3 of them!! Since that appetizer was $15.00, that came in at $5.00 per scallop--a pretty steep price, I think. This appetizer, though quite tasty, was way overpriced--in fact, it's the first time I ever really felt "gypped" in all my years of dining at WDW.
For our main course Mrs. U and I both had (at our servers suggestion) Pan Roasted Tilefish w/ Spring vegetable ragout and Spring garlic Coulis. Excellent choice and a big "hit". This is a sweet, fairly meaty fish that had some sort of "crust" from being pan-roasted. A fine entree, and we both made short work of it.
Desserts were also both "hits"--I had Stuffed Crepes w/ Grand mariner Cream and Strawberrys, while Mrs. U had the Crispy Chocolate Hazlenut bar w/ Cappuccino Ice Cream. Both were scrumptious!!
So-all in all, a good meal. Those "misses" were on some of the smaller things involving our meal, and our server was courteous and attentive. Dress in the FF that evening ran the gamut--from jackets and dresses, through slacks and sport shirts, down thru shorts and T-shirts. A little of everything.

Uncle...

I was hoping you would do a Flying Fish review...You'd think after all the times we've stayed at BoardWalk that DH and I would have tried the place...

But I plan on doing it this July (we've also going in May, but I don't think we'll make it then). I also like that child care is a stones throw from the place. Although we take our well-behaved children to upscale restaurants at WDW and elsewhere, this will be me and DH's "night out"...

Looking forward to it...

One good thing...DH and I don't eat rolls!!!!

The 'tilefish' sounds delicicous! I enjoy all the details in your reviews, it makes me feel like I'm there.............well, almost. :D
We've only eaten at Flying fish once and while we really enjoyed the food, we found the noise level to be very distracting.
Thanks for all your great reviews.

Tielfish sounds really good! I had the potatocrusted snapper two years ago and enjoyed it. Like you said there were a few misses to the meal that took away a little of the enjoyment.

We had our first visit to FF in January. We too sat in the little side room that you are referring to. It didn't bother us since it was our first visit and we had nothing to compare this location to. Who was your server? We had a lady named Terri (I think). We really liked her. We had been the Grand Marshalls in MK that day. When she came to our table she bowed before us. Too funny. What a great day that was. And our meal at FF was wonderful. A perfect ending to a Perfect day. We will go back next January as well. Thanks for your dinner report. I always look forward to reading your reports. Dawn

Yet another great review. FF is a spot we've not yet tried and I've been determined to get there. Now I'm not so sure. The tilefish sounds very good and I've never had it anywhere. However scallops at $5 a pop does sound excessive and stale bread at two different dinners does not speak well to the typical Disney detail. How hard is it to serve fresh breads or rolls? I believe I've read that all the BW restaurants are independently run. Is that accurate?

Anyway, thanks for the review. You've given me food for thought!:D

BCV23:
Bread and rolls do seem easy enough to do, that's for sure. But when I posted last time about the rye bread, several posters afterward commented on the warm and delicious bread they'd been served at the FF!! And I'm sure that's what they'd gotten. So maybe they mix up the bread at the whim and fancy of the server?? Who knows..
There are other appetizers in addition to those dearly priced scallops--the "peeky-toe" crabcakes seem to get high marks from other posters.
So I'd recommend that you do try the FF--two of my "misses" had to do with beer and where we sat. The beer may not even matter to you and the seating issue could have been easily solved on most "normal" nites.

Uncle-
I recently paid $13 for TWO scallops at a local seafood place. They were quite large and tasty and came with a grilled portabella, tomato, and fresh mozzerella. But I guess that is a bit pricey...

Good points Uncleromulus. This may be a spot to try with just my husband. It can get expensive with five of us.:D

Erikarate:
Yes-I think that is a bit pricey!!
Maybe scallops are becoming rare or something??
