The curious phrase added even more mystery to an already strange case. It turns out it's an apparent reference to a Cherokee myth called "The Rabbit, the Otter and Duck Hunting."
It's the story of a boastful rabbit who tries to convince the otter that he can catch a duck as well as the otter can. The rabbit throws a noose around the duck's neck but gets into trouble when the duck spreads its wings and flies away. The rabbit tries to hold on, but he falls into a hollow tree, gets stuck and is forced to eat his own fur until he is rescued.
