But the drawbacks to this new program are even worse with DVC.
Nonrefundable deposit and need advance planning.

With DH's job, he doesn't know July's schedule until after June 15.
Even if he has a week vacation scheduled he doesn't know until at least as late as June 15 whether he is commuting to/from work the day before and the day after his vacation week scheduled in July.

Sounds nice but it doesn't help me. We love the dining plan. Since you can't book the dining plan if you use DVC, that won't work for us.

The kitchen in the DVC unit would be wasted on us. I REFUSE to cook while on vacation.

Yes DVC is wonderful but with more and more people joining on a daily basis getting a room at the last minute is a thing of the past. As for renters the only way an owner can rent to you is if you specify you cannot cancel within the last 30 days or they could lose their points (actually they are placed in a holding account with very specific rules for usage) if it is at the end of their use year. for example my use year is Sept, if I cancel a vacation planned for July 30-August 6,2005. My points associated with this vacation go into a holding account and must be used before my use year is up or in this case by August 31. It is very hard to plan and execute a vacation for such a short timeframe so the points would be lost to me. That is why you sometimes see fire sales on the dvc rent board of $5 a point as this measly amount is better than nothing!

There is no question that there are significant benefits to advance planning, and significant benefits to committing to go as early as possible. While there are often "fire sales" with low rates close-in to the date of a trip, that generally reflects a error by management of the offering. A well-managed perishable offering (like a vacation, whether it be at a resort, or a cruise, etc.) will rise in price as time goes on, and inventory should sell-out just before, at the highest price for the offering -- the last-minute premium. I think most managers in the travel and hospitality industry know this, but have had a lot of trouble implementing it. Initially, it was due to the fact that knowledge of the market was so spotty that forecasting was little more than alchemy. They'd often have been better off throwing dice. It seemed to me that knowledge of the market was getting to a point of sophistication in the late 1990s, but then 9/11 occured, and all that knowledge was suddenly worthless. Now, as the economy improves, and things are more stable in the industry, companies are gaining that control over their offerings back, and so we'll see fewer and fewer mistakes like that, so less-and-less need to offer AP discounts.
