i'm still trying to increase my understanding of anything DVC related, so bear with me if i'm asking stupid questions :-)

what is the difference exactly between reservation or holding points ? am i correct in understanding reservation points are what happens when you cancel anything out of the dvc resorts, such as the disney collection or a cruise.... and holding points are what happens if you cancel a dvc resort within 90 (?) days of your stay ? and holding points need to be used in your use year and can only be used to reserve within 60 days of your stay ?

so my MAIN question here is; i seem to understand that the major difficulty with these holding points is the unavailability of villa's on such short notice.... but can't these points then be used to book the poly, the grand floridian, the yacht club or the fort wilderness resort ? (of course, i'm assuming here your points were bought direct; if you bought resale, you would not have this option) for these use of points i thought it's easier to still have availability, no ????? of course, they're not the best use of points, but atleast it allows you to recoup a part (you could also rent out these points for that use ????)

Holding account details from the member website:
A Holding Account is a "parking space" for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation that has been modified or cancelled 30 days to 1 day before your scheduled check-in date. Here are some guidelines regarding usage of Holding Account Vacation Points.

  • These Vacation Points can be used for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
  • These Vacation Points can also be used for a new reservation during your current Use Year in two ways:
    • For the Disney Collection* (except Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels), Concierge Collection*, or Adventurer Collection*, you can make the reservation more than four months before the end of your Use Year for a check-in date that is 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
    • For Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels, or the World Passport Collection, as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
    * Available when you purchase directly from Disney.
  • These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed.
  • These Vacation Points must be used by the end of the Use Year or they expire.

DVC Vacation points are converted to reservation points when you make a reservation at the Disneyland Hotel, the cruises, etc. That's when reservation points are created. They aren't created when you cancel said reservation.

From the MS Website, Home Resort Rules and Regulations

Reservation Points

Reservation Points are Home Resort Vacation Points used to reserve accommodations at non-DVC Resorts, except accommodations available through the RCI® External Exchange Program. One Reservation Point is equivalent to one annually allotted Home Resort Vacation Point in the Central Reservation System. Reservation Points have no other relationship with or comparison to Home Resort Vacation Points, and Reservation Points are established for convenience of reference only. Reservation Points expire at the end of the Use Year in which they are allotted.

Reservation Points cannot be banked, borrowed, transferred or used to reserve accommodations through the RCI® External Exchange Program, nor to reserve accommodations at DVC Resorts. Reservation Points cannot be returned to a Club Member as Home Resort Vacation Points.

So basically if you use your points to book a DCL cruise and then later cancel that cruise your points cannot return to your regular DVC points. The points have become Reservation Points which have to be exchanged with Disney Collection, Adventures by Disney, DCL, or any of the other exchange programs with the exception of RCI. The DVC has made RCI an exception from using Reservation Points for those stays and DVC resort stays.

thanks for confirming me the difference between reservation and holding points, but my main question was: isn't it a solution to book rooms like the poly and the yacht with holding points since these rooms seem to have more availability on short term instead of losing holding points ?

The second bulletpoint in erionm's post says you can use holding points for Disney Collection locations except as noted. So yes, you could use the points to book the resorts you mentioned. The drawback of course, is the extremely high number of points needed to book a night at them, but better to pay too much than let the points go to waste. :)

thanks papamoose. Does anyone have any experience booking these rooms on short term notice ? any idea on how wdw allocates availability of these to booking on points ?

We booked the Poly several years ago for NYE about 2 days out with no problem. This was prior to the $95 transaction fee for Disney Collection reservations.
