Solo Eats and Newbie Treats - Completed 1/28!

thanks for a wonderful update on Yak and Yeti. We ate there on Dec 5th and had a great lunch. I ordered the egg rolls too and it was fabolous and the ribs with fried rice and my husband too a few bites and wished he got that. I ordered the fried wontons...that's the only thing I did not really like (I know alot of the disboard likes it...I liked the mango pie that my husband ordered). I tried to take pictures so I can do a short food review of our past trip but I forgot or the food was already eaten.

Merry Christmas, Abby!

After getting drenched in a torrential downpour at AK, we returned to the hotel to dry off and get cleaned up for dinner at Jiko.

This would be my, as well as Caitlin and Jun's, first time so I was excited since I have heard so many good things about it.

We checked in a bit earlier and I was quite upset to hear they could not find a record of my ADR. When they said that I got very worried but they quickly added it wasn't important, they were not busy and could fit us in shortly. Phew!

We were seated about 5 minutes later. At one of the booths near the counter by the wood-fired ovens. I thought it was a great location as we were able to watch the chefs preparing some of the appetizers (and smell them!).

Our server Lucius greeted us promptly and told us were in for a treat that evening. After he fetched our drinks, we decided to split two appetizers among the three of us.

I had taken the Jiko Culinary tour on a previous trip where they provided a sample of the Taste Of Africa, which is three breads and three dips. It was really good so I pushed for that as one our selections and Caitlin and Jun agreed with me.

Taste of Africa - Naan, Papadum, and Another Pita-Like Bread. The only dip I can remember is the one on the right - Kalamata Olive Hummus. The green was some sort of spicy herb pesto...maybe cilantro? The red dip was a spicy chile paste of sorts.
march68.jpg

All the breads and dips were great, my favorite bread was without a doubt the Naan. It was soft, light, warm, and salty but not overly so. They bake them in the wood-fired ovens and you can really taste a huge difference. I am undecided on my favorite dip - they are all equally yummy!

For our other appetizer, we went with the BBQ Chicken Flatbread with apple-jicama slaw, African BBQ sauce, and four cheeses.
march67.jpg

This was another winner from the wood-fired ovens. The tang of the sauce with the contrast of the sweet and crunchy apple-jicama slaw, over gooey, melty cheeses hit it out of the park for me.

After our appetizers and shortly before our entrees arrived, Lucius brought out the standard Jiko Bread with Tandoori Butter:
march66.jpg

The bread was a very fluffy wheaten foccacia-type. It was just ok to me. I like tandoori spices, but I did not care for them in butter. I was glad we had our Taste of Africa breads earlier and didn't eat more than a couple of bites of this bread.

For entrees, Jun went with the Roasted Lamb Loin with herbed couscous, sun-dried cherries, and red curry sauce:
march71.jpg

Jun ordered it rare, and it came out cooked perfectly to his liking (ok maybe not quite, he's Japanese so he prefers things still moving! :rotfl2:). Anywho, he ordered it rare and it came out by the American standard of rare, just as he had ordered it.
I tasted it but don't really remember much about it. Jun loved it and gobbled it down.

Caitlin went for the vegetarian entree, a Seared Maize Pudding with chakalaka and basil buerre blanc.
march70.jpg

This was AMAZING! In Caitlin's words, it was 'light as a cloud'. It was a square of shockingly airy corn pudding, finished by searing to give a bit of a crust. It was so smooth and light, not at all something I would expect in a corn base dish. The chakalaka was a delicious mix of spicy vegetables that paired perfectly with the maize pudding. Add in the basil beurre blanc and this was just a winner all the way around.

I applaud Caitlin for ordering this because it sounded a little boring on the menu, but man did she do a good job picking it out! It suprised me that she ordered this because this is a girl who adores meat, so I would think in a nice restaurant she'd want to have some!

I went for what was listed as an appetizer dish for my entree: Seared Ostrich Filet with kamut, mushrooms, and truffle vinaigrette.
march69.jpg

Another hit from Jiko for us! The Ostrich was sooo tender and delcious. It tastes very similar to beef, but more....irony and gamey. That sounds like a bad thing, but trust me, it wasn't. The Kamut is an African grain that tasted like a cross between barley and brown rice to me. I really liked it, especially with the truffle vinaigrette, which gave the dish an amazing earthy aroma (is there any other word to describe the smell of truffles besides earthy?).

As stuffed as we already were, we decided to soldier on and have dessert. :rotfl:

Before dessert, Caitlin and I shared the Loose Leaf Vanilla Rooibos Tea:
march72.jpg

The teas are sold as a serving for once person, but there is enough for 2-3 cups so it's easy to share a pot.

The Vanilla Rooibos was described on the menu as 'Vanilla bean sweetens this Rooibos, producing a round, full cup which is ideal with a spot of milk'. It's even caffeine free!

Caitlin and I both thought it was a fantastic tea, especially with desserts. Rooibos is a medium-dark, somewhat full-bodied tea. The vanilla made it taste naturally sweet. I drank it plain, no milk or honey because I thought it was great as it was.

Jun chose the Pistachio Creme Brulee as his dessert:
march74.jpg

It had a chocolate layered bottom! I tasted this and while I love Pistachio and creme brulee, I wasn't big on the marriage of the two. It was a very unique taste. Jun seemed to really like it though.

Caitlin went for the Roasted Apple Tarte Tatin, which was the sugar-free option that evening.
march73.jpg

The Tarte Tatin was served with vanilla sauce and cinnamon ice cream. I tasted this, and while I could find no fault with it, it just didn't do anything for me. I guess I usually prefer a more decadent dessert. Caitlin really enjoyed it though.

For my dessert, I chose the Jiko Trio - Flourless Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Mousse, and Caramel Ice Cream.
march75.jpg

Everything about my dessert was good, but for some reason it just didn't 'wow' me like the appetizers and entrees. It was a bit of a let-down at the end of the meal. Again, there was no fault in the dish...but it lacked that 'OMG' factor for me.

Lucius was a good server. He wasn't all the personable, but we were never wanting for anything and he fulfilled all our requests in a timely manner.

Lucius was right - we did have quite the treat that evening and I look forward to returning to Jiko!
A-

P.S. Don't fall too in love with most of the dishes I reviewed - Jiko just got a new chef so the menu has changed a lot. The only things we ate that are still on the menu are the Taste of Africa (now with 4 dips!), the Flatbread, and the tea.

The next morning we had secured an 8:05am Crystal Palace breakfast ADR. I was very excited to take Caitlin and Jun there as it is my favorite breakfast in Disney. Plus, it would be their first character interaction!

Crystal Palace is my favorite Disney breakfast for a few reasons. First and foremost, they have consistently delicious and well-prepared food. I avoid buffets like the plague in my hometown because I never find the food worth the money. But The Crystal Palace is a different story - everything is hot and fresh (especially at an 8:05am ADR!) and tastes just as good as if you were ordering food off an a la carte menu. You can even get an omelet made to order.
CP is very nostalgic for me. It's the one restaurant my family always ate at on trips when I was a child.
I find the character interaction to be very good. They seem good at reading how much attention you want. And how doesn't love Winnie the Pooh?

We were seated fairly quickly after checking in and went right for the food!

I have committed a food porn sin though. I did not take any food photos at CP! I guess because it's a buffet and I was more concerned with getting photos of Caitlin and Jun with the characters, it just kind of slipped my mind.

But never fear, I will 'borrow' some CP food photos from my old reviews. ;)

First up, a view of the buffet area:

Winnie the Pooh with his new friends Jun and Caitlin:
march80.jpg

I always get the same few items when I go to CP, and sprinkle in a few other things.
DSCN0933.jpg

On the top is a Chocolate Mickey Waffle. I love Mickey Waffles and I love chocolate, but for some reason they don't pair well. The flavor is just 'off' to me, and it's easy to get a burnt one because you can't tell by the color!
Going clockwise from there is the Cinnamon Puffed French Toast. This is a signature item at CP and I would go there for this one thing alone. It taste like the love child of a cinnamon sugar donut and french toast. Dip it in some of the warm maple syrup, and is like a little piece of heaven for breakfast. Tasting the Puffed French Toast really tells me I am in the MK!
Next we have the Breakfast Pizza. This ties for my second favorite item. It's a medium thickness pizza crust topped with several kinds of cheeses and scrambled egg. Simple, but done well, and the result is delicious.
Next up is the Pastrami Smoked Salmon, the tie with the pizza for second favorite. I love lox and any variation on smoked salmon. This has a pastrami-style spice crust and is sliced nice and thin. I love just eating it plain, but it would be fantastic on a bagel if you have room for the carbs!
The potato wedge is called a Red Jacket Potato. It is only found at the Crystal Palace and it blows all other Disney breakfast potato dishes out of the park (pun intended or not, you choice :rotfl:). The wedges are always perfectly cooked, soft on the inside with areas of slight crispiness. The seasoning mix is just wonderful and they are never too greasy.
In the middle we have a Pork Sausage Link. I like this sausage better than the thicker links I find at most Disney breakfasts. It just taste better to me, especially dipped in warm maple syrup.

So that is a just a small sampling of the food offered at CP. They have a very expansive selection though, so I think even picky eaters would be very happy here. It's a great place to bring a family.

More character photos -

Caitlin and Tigger:
march79.jpg

I LOVE this photo of Caitlin and Piglet. The look on Caitlin's face is just like a 5 year old meeting Piglet for the first time!
march77.jpg

Unfortunately we missed Eeyore. We wanted to make it to Space Mountain at RD and it usually takes a bit more time than that for all the characters to make their rounds.

Crystal Palace was wonderful, once again. I still highly recommend it!

A+

Thanks for the CP review! Awesome photos and review! :thumbsup2

I guess I should give the Puffed French Toast another try. Tried it last time and wasn't a huge fan of it! But maybe I really should have dipped it into the maple syrup! ;) :lmao:
Okay - will try it again in February, I promise!

And I second your thoughts about the chocolate waffle - mine tasted burnt too and I always thought that waffle and chocolate would be a marriage made in heaven!

For our last dinner at Disney, we had an ADR at Flying Fish Cafe, a signature located at the BWI Resort.

We arrived a bit early for our 5:40 ADR and were seated promptly at 5:40.

The restaurant is fun and whimsical in a mature way. The design is contemporary but evokes the images of a boardwalk and Cooney Island with fish parachuting from the high ceiling and a ferris wheel on one wall.

Our server for the evening was Jay, whom our seater told us was one of the best since he had been at Flying Fish for a quite a while.

As we perused the menu, we were presented with a complimentary amuse-bouche.

march81.jpg

I cannot remember exactly what our server called it, but it was a piece of smoked salmon and avocado, over a cabbage slaw with tobiko (wasabi infused flying fish eggs - how appropriate).

This was good, but it didn't wow me. Caitlin and Jun seemed to appreciate it more than I did.

After we finally settled on what we would order, Jay brought us out a loaf of Flying Fish's fresh baked Sour Dough Bread, along with butter sprinkled with sea salt.
march85.jpg

This was good bread, but I still like the Sourdough at California Grill best. Flying Fish's version doesn't have enough crust for my tastes.

The three of us decided to share two appetizers. For our first selection we went with the Fresh Mozzarella di Bufala, Ugli Ripe Beefsteak Tomatoes and Tiny Florida Grape Tomatoes, with balsamic glaze, exotic peppercorns, petite basil, and Sicilian olive oil.
march82.jpg

This was a top-notch tomato salad. The tomatoes were ripe and fragrant, and the buffalo mozzarella was soft, sharp, and creamy. I am part Italian, so anything with tomato, cheese, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar appeals to me. This is one of those dishes that really shines when you use quality ingredients and Flying Fish doesn't skimp on this dish.

For our other appetizer, we went with what was actually listed as a side dish - Truffle and Herb-Laced Idaho Fries, served with Roasted Garlic Truffle Aioli.
march83.jpg

These were AMAZING! Hands down the best fries I've ever eaten in my life. Now they were not fries I would want to eat with everything, but for that time and place they were perfect. Fried to a perfect golden brown, slightly crispy on the outside, and teeming with the intoxicating truffle fragrance. I'm not someone who like dipping fries in plain mayo, but the Roasted Garlic Truffle Aioli was a different story - it made the fries even better.

No one could really make a decision on entrees, so we decided to each pick one and split them all. I love eating with people who have similar tastes!

Jun went for the Char-Crusted Black Angus New York Strip Steak, served with roasted fingerling potatoes, root vegetables, haricot vert, and sauce foyot.
march86.jpg

This was easily one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. We ordered it medium-rare and it came out perfectly done. The char-crust was delicious and wonderful contrast to the pink meat in the center. The foyot sauce (basically a bearnaise) was another lovely addition on the meat. This was a really classic entree and Flying Fish did a wonderful job of updating and making it a bit different with the char-crust. I would not hesitate an instant to take a meat and potato person to this seafood restaurant because this was an amazing steak.

Caitlin again surprised me by going with the vegetarian option that evening: Roasted Butternut Squash and Midnight Moon Goat Cheese Ravioli, served with root spinach, sunchokes, honshemeji mushrooms, sunchoke-porcini crema, and amaretti crumbles.
march87.jpg

Would the veggie entree stand up to it's meat counterparts again? Survey says......yes yes yes! :yay: This ravioli was out of this world good. Fresh, house made pasta around a creamy squash and goat cheese center, with all the lovely accompaniments...it was just perfect. It was savory, sweet, earthy, and substantial. Vegetarians can rejoice - no boring steamed veggie plate here!

For my pick, I went with the signature Potato-Wrapped Snapper, over leek fondue with veal glace, red wine and cassis butter reduction.
march88.jpg

This was yet another hit from Flying Fish. The snapper was moist and tender, surrounded by a crispy shell of potato. The leek fondue, with it's subtle onion flavor, was great with the fish. What really surprised me with this dish was the sauce - meat based red wine sauce for a white fleshed fish!?!?! Sounds so wrong in theory....but it was oh so right in execution. I think the potato wrapping helped 'beef up' the fish so it wasn't lost in the powerful sauce.

Dessert coming along in Part Two!

Thanks for the great update on Flying Fish, we ate there last month and we had an awesome meal. My husband was going back and forth with the tomato and Mozzarella for his appt but he choice the cheese platter...I think he wants to go back to the Flying Fish next time we go to to Disney

:thumbsup2 Great Flying Fish update! Some of your menu items looked familiar, guess I need to go back and check MY photos! ;)

FF is now tied for my second favorite signature with Jiko. It is really good. Thanks for reading!

Thanks Karin!

Perhaps I need to pimp my DR's over on the friendies thread?

UMMMMMMMMMMM Yeah!!!!

I'm still amazed that the Dis will let us use the word Pimp... :rolleyes1

Thanks for the FF review, everything looks delicious and what a great idea to share all of your dishes :)

OK then I will!
I know, I am surprised pimp and food porn don't get starred!

Thanks for the FF review, everything looks delicious and what a great idea to share all of your dishes :)

Thanks for reading! I love going out to eat with people who like to share their food. I have a hard time making decisions about what to order so it makes it easier when I know I will be able to try other things. :)

And now the part you've been waiting for....desserts!

Caitlin and I were immediately drawn to one of the seasonal offerings on the dessert menu. We considered sharing since we both wanted the same thing, but (wisely!) chose to get our own orders.

Jun went with the Caramelized Banana Napoleon - Phyllo, Banana Mousse, Creme Caramel and Exotic Fruit Coulis with Bitter Chocolate
DSCN1525.jpg

Unfortunately, I didn't taste this as I was too consumed in my own dessert to bother. :rotfl: Looks awfully lovely though, doesn't it? Jun seemed to enjoy it a lot. This is one of Flying Fish Cafe's signature items, so it's always on the dessert menu.

Caitlin and I each picked the Celebration of Plant City Strawberries, which was a trio of three mini desserts:
march89.jpg

On the bottom is the 'Sinful Valrhona Chocolate-Strawberry Delice'. This was like a dense chocolate ganache with strawberry flavor. Sinful was an accurate description for the menu - this was amazing! It was like eating the filling of a chocolate strawberry truffle that you might find at Godiva.

On the top right is the 'White Chocolate Strawberry Creme Brulee' with a rhubarb compote and a mini almond biscotti. The creme brulee was perfectly cooked and bursting with strawberry essence. The top was burnt just enough to give that satisfying crack when I hit it with my spoon. I didn't care for the rhubarb compote though, it was way too bitter for me. I guess I had never had rhubarb before. The biscotti was perfect though - crispy and delicious dipped in to the cream of the creme brulee.

My favorite part of the dessert, without a doubt, was the 'Toasted Almond, Polenta, and Strawberry Torta' with almond ice cream and an almond crunch. This was a sweet little almond-corn cake with a subtle strawberry flavor. The texture was between corn bread and pound cake, but denser. The ice cream on top was so good and having a bite of cake that the ice cream had soaked in to was just gastronomic heaven. :cloud9: This was easily in the the top five desserts I've ever eaten.

Caitlin enjoyed her plate too and agreed it was extremely delicious!

Flying Fish Cafe is now one of my favorite places to eat at Disney. Highly, highly recommended and an very enthusiastic grade A!

Wow!!! These are some really yummy desserts you got there! :thumbsup2 I am craving something sweet just looking at them! ;)

Love the FF desserts! They are a bit different from your typical Disney dessert and both look delicious! :cloud9:

thanks for the update on the dessert...it brings back memories of Flying Fish. I had Caramelized Banana Napoleon and it was yummy.

Oh boy that Strawberry Dessert looks amazing

I would love to try that with a nice espresso at the end of a meal
