Solo: A Star Wars Story

Finally saw it last night with my son. It was a fun popcorn movie that didn't do much to excite me for whats next until the last 2 twists...and both of those had nothing to do with Solo.

It seems to me that they could continue those plot threads into the Boba Fett movie, if they set it in the same time frame. The Crimson Dawn could certainly be involved with the notorious bounty hunter, so they could still have that certain villain, but not really touch on Han and Chewie, etc.

My biggest issue with this movie, as it was with Rogue One, is that they don't use the SW title crawl. It's as if the people at Lucasfilm forgot that for the last 30 years they've had the crawl in nearly every SW video game. It has nothing to with the continuity of the main story line or whatever excuse they use. Its absence is jarring. That coupled with the non-John Williams-esque music really takes me out of the universe right from the beginning. Sorry Disney, Star Wars movies have John Williams (or someone that emulates him) and a title crawl.

I thought Rogue One should have opened like The Clone Wars did. I can just hear that narrator. "Crisis on Jedha! The Galactic Empire is mining valuable Kyber Crystals to develop a new super weapon, said to be capable of destroying entire planets." You get the idea. I think that would have fit perfectly in that movie. I really didn't have a problem not using the opening crawl, the main theme, however, sounded like a knock-off of the classic Star Wars theme. Solo's was better I felt.

Ya even with this fun Solo flick, which I was meh about, I am flat out not looking forward to a Boba stand alone movie.

I enjoyed the movie. I haven't watched Clone Wars or Star Wars Rebels, but now I want to - the movie made me interested in other parts of the Star Wars Universe outside of the trilogies...like how are the "common folk" if you will experiencing life in the galaxy. You see bits of it in Solo and bits of it in TLJ. I haven't read any books or comics, but may check those out as well.
It was interesting to me to see what Han was like prior to meeting up with the Luke, Leia, etc. - how he got his last name, how he met Chewy, how he got the gun and the falcon, etc. I also thought Alden did a really good job of portraying him - I feel like people were saying he was terrible and its why he wasn't in any of the trailers very much, etc. but he even walked like him...I thought he did well.

I cannot say enough about the Rebels series. I borrowed Season 1 from our local library, and just loved it. I ended up buying it and Season 2, and then Season 3. Patiently waiting for Season 4 to be released. Great story lines, and characters, with some wonderful twists.

Wasn't so much a fan of the Clone Wars. I may revisit it.

My girls and I have just gotten through the 3rd season of Rebels, and I think it might be my favorite thing in all of Star Wars, especially the finale episode of each season. I love the whole Rebels gang and the depth of their stories over so many episodes, and they make it so exciting whenever a big SW movie character makes a cameo appearance. Clone Wars just is not as rich emotionally and the animation is lacking compared to Rebels, although it covers important backstory, and the opening movie was great for starting the Anakin/Ahsoka relationship.

On that note, I can't wait for Star Wars Resistance to get here this fall!

Few more thoughts.

Wasnt a big fan of the lighting. I know lighting can set the mood, but it can't be too dark. The audience needs to see.

I didn't have any issues with Emilia's acting. But I think someone has to be really bad for me to take notice.

Agree about the lighting. It's a problem I'm finding in films more and more recently. It's also another huge reason I won't see 3D movies (among other reasons) because the glasses dim it even more and often the movie theater doesn't increase the brightness like they are supposed to to account for that.

If you haven't watched Season 4...prepare to be blown away! The finale of the series is epic. Enjoy!

I didn't expect much based on some of the comments in this thread and other reviews. I also wanted to hear the line from someone "great kid....don't get cocky!", but missed it.

After seeing it this afternoon, I cannot find a fault. I'm sure there are chock full of disconnects or incomplete associations, but I'm not going to focus in on them right now. To me, this movie harked back to my days of waiting in 3 hour lines to watch Episode IV and made this adult man, feel like a child again.

Was that R2 on the mining planet just before the door opened/shut?

Yep I liked it as well.

That's why its a shame it is being avoided by so many, no matter what the reason/s, and there are many.

Although I don't blame any of them, its a free country.

I feel a little differently. Lower ratings mean that I can get my copy of it sooner, and that it will cost less.

I don't need anyone else to like a movie for me to like it, and I really liked it.

To your spoiler

From what I understand, this is the first Star Wars movie that doesn’t have R2D2 or C3P0 in to - so if you saw that it likely was just a different R2 unit

Early estimates for this weekend are $40 million

Estimates are $400-450 million when it leaves theaters

That’s worse than my prediction of $650 (you can go back several pages to read my prediction)

Will Disney learn from this? Judging by all the excuses I’m gonna say “no”

I still think this movie opening on Memorial day weekend rather than mid December hurt it quite a bit.

I didnt get to see it until Tuesday BECAUSE of the Holiday weekend.

C3PO first mentions Kessel to R2D2 just before they get into the escape pod in Episode IV. He doesn't say they were there, but at least alludes that he is aware of it being a slave labor colony. That is why I thought maybe both were on Kessel previously.

And i feel it could have done worse. On the gulf coast we were dealing with soggy weather due to Alberto I know several people who avoided the beach and hit the theater instead.

What exactly are they supposed to learn? Don't screw up the movie? They already know that. Easier said than done though.

Jon Kasdan’s tweet says it all.

He admits the movies are political and he’s not sorry about that.
