Soldiers in Costa Maya, Cozumel?

We love Cozumel and stay about 10 days each stay. We feel extremely safe in Cozumel. We also stay on the mainland in Playa Del Carmen and feel the same there. Is there crime, sure, but is there crime in your hometown, sure.

Costa Maya is one of our favorite stops in the Western Caribbean. We felt perfectly safe on our last visit there toward the end of June this year.

The cruise ship pier area is very touristy, essentially an open air shopping mall where the only people you will see are fellow cruisers and employees of the complex trying to sell you stuff. I would suggest checking out the Maya Chan beach resort, a fantastic worry-free way to spend the day there and get away from it all:

We were in Cozumel on DCL in 2007 and 2008. I only saw police, but no soldiers. I do agree the taxi ride is the scariest part. We had no working seatbelts. We haven't mentioned this yet to grandma who is joining us for her first cruise ever. If we get stopped by soldiers, it will certainly be her last!

Thanks to all for your input. Obviously my husband's coworker is unfamiliar with soldiers and cruising so he was pretty surprised.

As mentioned for years Cozumel and Cancun have had armed soldiers around. Once in Cancun our taxi was stopped by armed soldiers on a road and it was quite scary....we were allowed to stay in the back of the cab but the driver had to get out and open all the doors and trunk so the soldiers could take a look....all the time with their guns drawn....

We have also always seen them when we get off the ship in Cozumel.

karana, if taxi's scare your family you might want to consider renting a car from ISIS in Cozumel. She is cheap, insurance is included and so is seat belts. She comes highly recommended by so many people. Here is her website:

I was just in Costa Maya and Cozumel last week on the Oasis (RCCL).

We must have been in Cozumel same day you were there!

We were in Cozumel Oct. 7, took a taxi from the pier to Paradise Beach. No armed soldiers that we saw.

We have seen this in lots of ports. Mexico, Nassau. Does not bother me in the least. They are dressed like that in Euope airports as well.
