Okay, this certainly isn't Disney and maybe not budget but you guys are the only place I am on that has a lot of people, I'm not much of a forum person. :goodvibes

I have a terrible time sleeping. The best bed I ever had was a water bed. I loved it, slept great, felt wonderful when I woke up, but can't sleep in one with DH in it. Every time he'd move the waves sloshed me around and I'd wake up. At the time we had our Select Comfort bed that I absolutely could not sleep in at all, so he slept on that, I was in the water bed, and he hated that. Anyway, we found these soft sided waterbeds. I like that I won't have the issues making the bed (DH had to change them on the other one, it was too heavy for me) and they come in a dual chamber so hopefully it'll lessen the movement issue. Our question is how does the foam pad or whatever pad it comes with, effect the waterbed feel. We can not find anywhere that has them set up to try them. I'm really worried that a foam topper will make it feel more like a foam mattress than the waterbed one. At this point we are looking at having to purchase one to try out. If it doesn't work we'll be out the shipping money to return it. :worried:

I thought maybe someone on here might have one or have had one that could tell me what they think of them or know of good brands to buy or where to buy them. Any information anyone has would be helpful, we're at a loss as to what to do!!

TIA

If you want to buy a water bed, first get yourself a time machine and get back to 1977.. good luck

Oh wow, I didn't even know they made waterbeds anymore!

Have you ever tried out a memory foam mattress?

I know this isn't the answer you are looking for.... but waterbeds are awful for your back and body. I'm not sure your age but this might be something you want to consider. If you have a chiropractor or know anybody in the orthopedic field you might ask them their thoughts. If I were you I would try out a Tempurpedic or maybe one of the newer gel foam beds that are out now. If you go to a specialty sleep shop that is reputable they should ask you questions about your sleep habits and might be able to be helpful. Also, if you don't know what causes your sleep issues, you might talk to your doctor, you might benefit from an overnight sleep study. Treating the sleep issue before diving into an expensive bedding option that might not turn out well is probably a good idea. Best of luck to you!

I used to sleep on one of those, but it was about 8 tubes that went inside the shell. Even if one broke, it wouldn't flood. To have that bed with a nice memory foam topper on it would be heaven. It does have more support than traditional bladder waterbeds.

There's no sloshing. But there's several differences in thickness and densities of foam that can affect how much it feels like a traditional bed

:) If you want a traditional 70s waterbed you have to have that time machine. And oh man do I wish I had one. I loved my waterbed and could sleep FOREVER in it, because all I had to do was move and it was a new bed.

And I *am* a chiro. Love traditional, old-school, waterbeds for my back. :)

I had one of the ones like the poster above, about 20 years ago, and liked it while it lasted but the "baffles" I believe they were called after a year or 2 started sprouting leaks, and we would get damp spots. You could feel movement, but not from the other person, as he had about 4 individual tubes under him. Now after 10 years and 3 different innerspring mattresses (the last of which a Westin Hotels Heavenly Bed mattress only lasted 18 months before getting a huge crater in the center), I have changed to a natural latex mattress from Costco, and loving it. Natural Latex is a totally different animal than memory foam, and you can customize the firmness of it, but the type of latex mfg process Talalay or Dunlop and the density you choose. I know you are going based on the memories of your water bed, but I think there are better products out there today. Whatever you get make sure you know how hard or soft it is, and don't go by the description, as some peoples soft, is another persons hard as a brick.

Yeah, I don't think I want a 70's waterbed :goodvibes That's what I always thought when DH would mention waterbeds and I refused to try one. I'm glad to hear from a chiro that they think they're alright. Mine agrees, if it works it's fine.

Yes, something like these. We have SAMS near us but they don't have anything set up so you can actually lay on one to see how they are. Don't know what they'd do returns wise though. Might be somewhere I can buy from and return if it's not alright. Thanks :goodvibes

I think it has a lot to do with the individuals body. We had a Select Comfort bed that was great till I had kids. After that, no matter what we tried I could not sleep on it at all. It would take me 20 min to get myself out of bed in the morning I was in so much pain... ended up sleeping on the couch for 3 years. We have a foam mattress right now but it's never been great for me. It worked, but I'm starting to get back pain in the morning again and it feels too hard all the time. No, it's not a Tempurpedic, but I can't spend that kind of money on a bed :headache: We've had so many problems that I could end up not being able to sleep on it after a time. I don't have issues till what would be after any "trial period" I've been able to find. The water bed I was on for over a year and it was never anything but fantastic. I felt great in the morning. Not tired, I slept so well, it was heaven :cloud9:

I do see a chiropractor, Dr's don't want to do more than give you medicine, so we've just been trying to find something that works. Since the waterbed worked so well before I'm dying to try it again!

Thanks for the review :goodvibes I did notice there is a difference in the foam toppers and was hoping that if I stick with a very thin one it won't take away from the waterbed feel. Most seem like they are trying to make them feel like a regular bed...why get a waterbed then?!

DH & I sleep on an original waterbed mattress in a wooden frame. Always have. I think our last one came from Walmart. Hope you are able to find one.

My aunt used to work for a company that dealt wholesale in polyfoam. I got a 3" egg crate foam topper for the bed because the original shell was nearly flat. It was a very soft foam, so it didn't take away from waterbed feel all that much.

I would go with a softer shell, not necessarily a thinner shell.

Had a king size one almost 30 years ago. Was nice because it had two separate sets of tubes so DH and I could fill them how we liked them to our own idea of comfort, they also had separate heaters which was a plus. We had the bed for over 10 years with no leaking problems and we had cats that slept with us. I do remember you had to clean and condition them, which we did as recommended. And the coverlet could be dry cleaned.

Wonderful, just the info I'm looking for :thumbsup2 I feel much more comfortable about the whole thing now. I really needed to hear if anyone had done this and what it did to the feel. I'm going to be talking to DH tonight about ordering something. I'd really like to sleep better again :goodvibes

I have a wood, hard sided waterbed and really struggle to sleep on anything else. I have a 95% waveless....very little movement. You can try a 100% waveless mattress too. I've purchased the mattresses from Ebay and haven't had any issues (new).

Good luck!!

I miss my waterbed. We had the wooden sided one that was almost waveless. When that one began leaking, we replaced it with the ones with tubes. It was not the same and once it started leaking we got rid of it. the bed I have now I hate! I am going to have to get another bed and I hope the next one works. DH will never go back to a waterbed so I am out of luck there. :(

I loved my waterbeds. We tried a top of the line memory foam mattress at a relative's and it was like sleeping on a concrete slab!
