Soft Openings.....how do they work?

hi, in May 2011 we rode the updated star tours ride, this was classed as a soft opening, this is where they open a new or altered ride to guests to test it out and iron out any kinks before its fully operational. they will open the ride for a limited time, you just queue as normal nothing different apart from they are testing the ride, so be aware it may stop and start and the queue and waiting time may be longer.
cal :)

We were there for the SM soft opening. It was open at random times during the day. We were able to do it twice during our trip. We were also there during the new fantasyland soft opening. It was pretty much the same it was open during random times. That time I had the impression they were counting how many people they were allowing in the new land.

Does the amount of time an attraction is available during soft openings increase the closer it gets to the official opening date? Like for the first week, it's only open a couple hours a day but by the last few days before the official opening it will be open more than it will be closed?

We rode the Little Mermaid ride during soft opening in Oct. 2012. It was pretty late at night and they just waved us in, walked right on. It wasn't open when we were there earlier in the day.

We were there for Expedition Everest soft opening in March 2006. It wasn't scheduled to open till April but we saw it running and just walked over and got in line.

We rode Toy Story Manie during soft openings. It was the week before it offically was open. They had FP going too, but with FP+ hard to say if they will use it all.

Depends on your plans. I am going with my friend the May 10-20 with no grandchild this time so we can do whatever we want when we want. With that being said we will probably be at MK a lot and be stalking the area. But we go 3 times a year for total of over 30 days so I don't mind spending time doing this. If you have young kids and have full plans I would not stress over it. There is no real science to soft openings. Many times it is being in the right place at the right time or be willing to spend the time hanging out and watching.

I will keep eye on the forums and twitter also to see if anyone posts its open when we are there.

Pretty much it's a "be in the right place at the right time". The ride will open and close randomly and except for a rush of people when the line starts to form, there isn't a lot of notice or predictability about it.

The annoying part is that you can be in line waiting and they suddenly decide to close it down...and they will make you clear the line.

heading there next week and really hoping for a soft opening. I wanna ride the seven dwarfs mine.
