My dd just got a spacer put in yesterday she has lots of metal at the roof of her mouth and some on the sides. She is very uncomfortable and really dosen't want to eat anything today.

I am sure many of you have gone through this with your kids so any helpful advise or ideas would be appreciated.

She got it in late yesterday and had some soup for dinner and felt ok last night. Woke up this am very sore and uncomfortable and tried some rice krispies but really just drank the milk.

Other than the obvious soft foods like soup, oatmeal, maybe tuna do you have any suggestions on soft fairly nutritous (or at least filling for now) foods?

Thanks all -

TJ

braces on the other day - so we are back on soft foods. Does she like milkshakes or smoothies? These were a big hit in our house. Hopefully she'll get used to it soon - it took my dd a while to get the hang of eatting without getting food stuck on the top of the spacer!!!

My boys would eat macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, peanut butter and elly on mushy white bread, soft pizza(a little under cooked so the crust didn't harden),scrambled eggs, pancakes, french toast. These foods filled their bellies until they could chew again but it usually was only one or two days.I had two boys with braces and they would hurt after spacers or power chains were adjusted. My pediatric dentist would tell me to give them Tylenol right after we left the office. I would bring it in my purse. It took the edge off. Good Luck and i hope your child feels better

I have 2 boys in braces right now! The younger one had a hard time for the first few days and was so sore that he couldn't chew anything. He lived on pudding, yogurt, ice cream and frozen fruit bars. He also loves Nutella and eats it straight out of the jar. He finally moved on to soft sandwiches and cereal. After a few days, he was fine and eating most everything. Tylenol or Motrin is also helpful. I would give him some before and after school and at bedtime. Hopefully your daughter will feel better and be back to eating in a few days.:)

I had the dreaded spacer, and if I recall correctly, I lived on shakes, smoothies, broths, puddings - basically anything I didn't have to chew - for the first week or so. After that, I was able to move up to mashed potatoes, Jello, meatloaf in small pieces, oatmeal, etc, and around the two week mark, I was mostly back to solid foods (anything hard still caused pain, but that went away just in time for the first twist of the key :sad2: ). My parents and I weren't so concerned about nutrition at that point...I just wanted something in the stomach.

Also, my orthopaedic doctor suggested alternating Tylenol and Advil to help with the pain (he actually suggested this when I tore a ligament in my knee, but it helps with tooth pain as well!). Start with Tylenol, two hours later give Advil, then cycle every two hours. Worked as long as I didn't have to chew anything...

Hope your DD feels better soon!

Thanks everyone for the great food ideas and the encouragement.

I have been giving her advil (we don't use tylenol) and that seems to help. Luckily she is a good eater so she has options.

I am heading to the grocery specificly for things for her - smoothies and mashed potato will make her happy. Maybe some of those drinkable soups with the smaller noodles.

She starts school on Monday so lunch is going to be interesting. She loves salmon salad and tuna salad so she should be able to eat that with a fork.

I feel your pain! My dd11 just got a mouth full of metal on Monday. Her pain was pretty much gone by Wednesday, but she still can't really chew (because of the bite guard and "pendulum" in her mouth, her top and bottom molars don't touch each other). We've had good luck with smoothies, and here are two of our favorite recipes (without measurements, as I usually just eyeball them):

1. Strawberry-Banana: a few frozen strawberries, 1/2 banana, yogurt (strawberry, vanilla, or straw/banana), and a little milk in a blender.

2. Chocolate-PeanutButter-Banana: frozen banana, Carnation instant breakfast (chocolate) mixed with milk, teaspoon or so of pb in a blender.

Our dd has also been eating pasta, mac&cheese, and soup, but we're gonna have to figure out a way for her to chew (I sense another trip to the orthodontist in the near future) or come up with some more protein ideas...

Good luck!

Thanks for the recipies - my dd associates smoothies with vacation so that will be fun for her to help make and enjoy :)

My dd4 just had her tonsils and adenoids taken out yesterday. She's doing surprisingly well, but then again she's on pain meds and tylenol.

But some of the foods we stocked up on for her is chicken noodle soup, jello, pudding, popcicles, yogurt, and that's all I can think of right now.

When my DS13 got his spacers he just wanted cold stuff so he had smoothies and frozen fruit bars. School lunch was usually PB&J, Nutella or Cheerios. Is the spacer a mandibular expansion unit to correct the curviture of her mouth? If so, this will hurt while you are turning the key until they lock it in place. Good luck:flower3: .
