Sofa people here. Add me to the list of people who never heard of a Davenport. Who knew? :confused3

I say couch, but my grandparents also called it davenport. They lived in Illinois :)

My in laws call it a divanette and it drives me crazy. Its a couch!!!!! They live in southeast Missouri in the hills.

Sofa = 2 seater couch, also called a "loveseat", but can also be called a couch
Couch = sits three
Davenport = ?

Couch!

My DH's grandparents called it a davenport. That was the first time I actually heard someone use that term in their everyday vocabulary.

:rotfl: I always wondered if that had something to do with it, I live within an hour of Davenport! We call it a couch but it was just as common to hear it called a davenport (mostly my grandmother and her friends) while growing up.

My parents grew up in the Quad Cities and my mom still calls the couch a davenport. My DH and I were talking about the word davenport a few weeks ago after leaving my parents house. He said he had never heard anyone use the term until he met my mom.

couch and sofa .....either. They mean the same to me.

Grew up hearing davenport...think that is a generational word ;)

Maybe davenport is a midwestern thing- my grandma always called hers a davenport! I voted couch, but I think I use couch and sofa pretty equally. My kids use couch, so I must use it more often.

Usually sofa or couch. Don't hear anyone call it as davenport around here!

In Canada, we would add "chesterfield" to the list. Don't ask, because I have no idea why! :confused3

I call it a couch but my grandma always called it a davenport. :)

Perhaps it's Midwestern but my parents as well as DW and I use the term all the time to refer to a specific kind of furniture. Granted, that style was popular in the 1930's through the 1960's and isn't so popular now, but it's a distinct kind of furniture, not just another name for a couch..

On a couch, the legs are practically unnoticeable.
On a sofa and a davenport, the legs are obvious. But a davenport has prominent exposed wood and is not overstuffed.

Definitely a couch here, but my grandparents call it a davenport and more commonly a damport. They're from IN, BTW.

I've always said couch, but my grandparents used to call them "divans."

I was about to say "are you from St. Louis???" and then I looked below your name. My Grandparents (from the city of StL) used to say divan too!

Couch. I have only used the word "sofa" when in a furniture store shopping for a couch. :rotfl:
