Sodas: Cans, 2 Liter Bottles, or Disney Mug?

We are anxiously awaiting our first Disney cruise (Magic) at the end of April. DH, DS, and I love sodas. We are thinking about bringing our own sodas to save money (and for the convenience of having them in our room.) My questions for all the experienced Disney cruisers are:

(1) Would you recommend cans or 2 liter bottles? (Is it easier to have the cans in the beverage "cooler", or just using the ice in the buckets for the 2 liter bottles?)

(2) Is there a storage issue?

(3) If we decide on the refillable mugs, how many ounces do they hold? (Our Carnival cruise last summer had soda cards, but the cups of soda were only 6 ounces or so. Not really worth the effort.)

Thank you for your help.

We were on the 2/10 4-night Wonder cruise and took along several .5 liter bottles of Diet Coke.

I just kept them in the bag I brought them in and used the ice bucket in the room. Worked out very well.

The room cooler is small but the cans would fit fine. We chose the larger bottles because we could cap them and finish the soda later.

Bon Voyage!

We do both- the bottles do not fit in the cooler but the cans do- there is usually ice but when it is melted we use the cans. The soda mug is way to expensive IMO and I think that it is kinda a rip off that you can't bring it back when you cruise again! The last time I only brought a 6 pack and 2- 2 liters. When we got to St Maarten we bought a couple of more. They were a couple of bucks each there.

I thought your food was included in your price. Soda is not included? I am confused about what exactly is included?

Rneighh:

Soda with meal in dining room - included
Soda not with a meal - extra (at pool, on deck, from snack bar, etc.)

We brought a couple of 16oz bottles of Diet Coke and just left them in the ice bucket. We did buy the mugs for our 7-day cruise and used them often. If nothing else they are a great souvenir of your fun on DCL! We bought 2 for our family of four (be sure to bring a Sharpie marker to write your name/cabin number on them since they all look alike) We did take them along on our second cruise and had no problem with using them. We also bring along a couple of plastic tumblers for larger servings of ice, water and adult beverages.

Just my personal opinion here. After getting off $3,300 for a one week cruise we did not worry about the cost of a soft drink. We opted for one mug which we shared during the day. We would rather spend the money than have to leave the deck to go back down for refills from the cooler. If we got tired of Coke products I would go fill it up with cold water. We also got the beer mug which I used a couple of time a day. Both a great souvineirs of a great trip. We plan on doing the same thing in September.
Hope you have a great trip,
:pinkbounc :bounce:

I most defenitely recomend cans. First of all, you do not have to spend the money on the mugs and lug them around everywhere. You can fit a whole lot in the refridgirator right in your room and if you wanted a WHOLE lot you could even bring an extra cooler. Also, you can just grab one on the go rather than a large bottle. What we did a lot is at the little shows in between the plays and dinner....we would run to our room real quick and just grab a coke. so i MOST DEFENITELY recomend cans of soda. i hope this helped!!

Thank you all for your help. I think we will definitely do the cans. A while back, I read a tip to put ziploc bags of ice in the beverage cooler to help the drinks get cold. I also read that the cabin steward fills the ice bucket twice per day. Is there an ice machine on each floor in case we need more?

Also, do they provide cups in the room (or are they glasses?) I am not crazy about my four year old son using a glass. Thanks again.

I agree that the soda mugs are WAY too expensive. 35 bucks? Are they nuts?
They're only 9 bucks at WDW!!

I don't believe there are any ice machines, except maybe at the free beverage station, where milk drinkers are in heaven! I kinda remember seeing one there. That's not too convenient though. I imagine you can just call room service for it. We never really needed it, we got by fine with the 'fridge' (beverage cooler).

2 liter bottles would never fit in the tiny coolers the rooms have. Cans or smaller bottles only. We had a six pack of beer and a six pack of soda in there easily enough. Just take enough on board to get you to St. Maarten (if you're on the eastern cruise). Then go into any one of the many shops there that sell beverages, and restock! You can do the same thing in St. Thomas.
I like to drink beer, and for what it costs for ONE on board, I bought 6 in port!
However, I did by the beer mug on board, which isn't too bad a deal. But the soda mugs are out of line, IMHO.

Don't be shy about bringing your own on board - nobody cares!
Just ENJOY!!!!!

'Beano'

Hi DVCLady, from what I understand I think you can walk right on board with it. There is no law against it. Heck, I'm thinking about bringing a keg on board with me. (Ha Ha. I wish):bounce:

Wishiwasgolfing, Your reply made me laugh, cost my dh asked me the same question when I told him you can bring beer on board, Are kegs allowed? I told him to bring enough to get to St martin and then he could restock, so we donot have to lug it all on board when we are checking in. We will also be bringing on our own soda's also, I cannot see paying for a mug.

Hi lUVTOGO, I know what you mean about the soda mug. WOW!
$35 bucks! gimme a break! Most cruises have FREE soda,etc...
but Disney is smart because with all the kids on board they figure they can stick it to you. Plus the price of the excursions. I think we will be excursioning by ourselves. Not that I'm cheap but come on now. They stiffed us enough on the price of the cruise.
Yeah, I guess booze is pretty cheap on the islands. I might have to buy some rum and then pour some of that coke in it that we carry on board. I'll have my sea legs in no time. I won't know if I'm drunk or just not sea worthy yet. Whoo hoo!
You know something. I get a real "kick" out of this message board. Some of the questions are just hysterical.
see ya:)

It's my understanding from recent posts that you cannot "just walk onboard" with a case of soda or beer under your arm. It must now be in a suitcase (either checked or carryon).

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Our mugs were free b/c we booked thru AAA. 4 mugs are sitting in our cupboard now though they are nice souveniers. If I had to pay for them, I would have definately gotten one. I felt so 'bloated' (sorry people) after 2 days of soda that I started filling mine with water & lime to keep hydrated. For anyone doing the land/sea - if you buy the mugs on land - try and use it onboard. Wish I'd known on my 1st cruise.

Hey - Wish I Was Golfing -
Which cruise line did you go on that soda was free? I have only been on DCL and RCI and paid on both pretty much the same prices on sodas. (mug for DCL and soda program with RCI)

Can someone tell me about the refillable beer mug? Cost?

There is a refillable mug deal where you can get your 22-ounce mug refilled with one of the draft selections for the price of 16-ounces ($3.25 for domestic, $4.00 for imported). When I sailed, it was a heavy glass mug that I wouldn't have wanted to carry around. Recent cruisers have reported that the beer mug is now plastic. I believe the mug costs around $10.
