The biggest problem I had with the tax is they picked sugary drinks consumed by low income residents to tax. Drinks consumed by high income residents are exemptedSin taxes are a double edged sword. Once the agency collecting the tax gets used to the money they really don't want people to stop sinning.
Is it by any chance...green?If we are going to go down this path, we should do it fully!
We should create a single approved nutritive substance. It should provide 100% of the daily recommended vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, etc.
It should be the only item we are allowed to eat and you should not be allowed to eat more than 2000 calories of it a day.
It would eliminate world hunger and greatly relieve pressure on the world health care system.
I'm not sure where you were shopping, but I recall tons of processed foods in the 70s.That's how grocery stores were when I was a kid. But they quickly changed in the 80s.
I remember all kinds growing up in the 50's I had probably 3 packages of Hostess Cupcakes every week. And a lot of pop, all sugared. Kayo chocolate 'milk'.I'm not sure where you were shopping, but I recall tons of processed foods in the 70s.

The movie Demolition Man. Or the books 1984 and/or Atlas Shrugged. So, where does that slippery slope end?
Lenina Huxley: Ah, smoking is not good for you, and it's been deemed that anything not good for you is bad; hence, illegal. Alcohol, caffeine, contact sports, meat, bad language, chocolate, gasoline, uneducational toys and anything spicy. Abortion is also illegal, but then again so is pregnancy if you don't have a licence.

The slope is really more of a roller-coaster these days. We've got provincial governments here using tax dollars to provide "clean" heroin, fentanyl and meth to addicts at medically supervised consumption sites for "harm reduction". Pretty sure all those substances have been banned at some point. So, where does that slippery slope end?
This.
I have commented in the past here that I was astounded at what people posted was their usual childhood lunches. So much processed foods like twinkies back in the 70s but not for us!
Sounds remarkably like Cuba - they only eat what's provided for them to purchase through communist government outlets. (I recently returned from a vacation there and it was extremely eye-opening.)If we are going to start banning foods, lets just eliminate all processed foods. Only sell meat, veggies, fruits & whole grains. These are the things we all should be eating.
This.

Guns kill people too. How about banning those along with soda.

For some of us, living longer while not enjoying the life we have isn’t worth it.
There are plenty of things that lower life expectancy. Do we ban them all?
I see people drinking sugary drinks across all income spectrums.
So are 100s of thousands of things. Are you banning all of them too? This is a simple one with clear evidence that it's really bad for you.
I want to have an enjoyable old age. One of my friends in his 70s still hikes rim to rim of the Grand Canyon every year. I want to be active and enjoy my old age. That's the point. I don't want to suffer in old age.
MJ is way worse for you than soda or fruit juice yet that's being legalized pretty much everywhere. The basic idea here is the research is showing that consuming high amounts of sugar lead to energy depletion and hunger. This is why folks gain weight from drinking it. It makes them more hungry.
How does other people drinking unhealthy stuff affect you living a long enjoyable life? This is a simple one with clear evidence that it's really bad for you.

I firmly believe this but people have to find their own way towards it. The government needs to adjust the stupid food pyramid. Coke needs to stop sponsoring health conferences. Nutrition education needs to include that excess sugar causes liver issues. Metabolic diseases account for the majority of health dollars spent in the US.That's the problem. Sugar isn't good in small amounts. Our colons can only handle 6g a day.
Here's how much is in a can of Coke:
