Soda and Fruit Juices Should be Banned

I think banning things because "they're bad for you" is not the way to go. If people decide to drink soda or juice or smoke or drink, that's on them. I don't drink soda or juice by choice, but I would not like to have the choice taken away from me.

But then I pay more for healthcare because of their choices too. And we seem fine as a society to pick and choose stuff to ban.

We should be banning very, very little...and only those things that actively harm others in either an immediate or long term way. (Aka, we shouldn't ban things that only hurt the consumer).

At least, if we want to have any hope that people will care about the bans.

Not banned but the taxes should be very high to discourage consumption. Here a case of soda costs about $21 because they are adding a sugar tax to discourage consumption. We quit drinking soda when the tax was added a few years ago.

This is classic MMT. Raise taxes to reduce consumption to bring down inflation, rather than raise interest rates.

I'm not a proponent of banning unless the use of a product by one person directly harms others. What I do think we need is way more education on nutrition. Then you have to find people who are interested in listening to "education" and so on. Very hard to do. I generally don't like to get my information from random YouTubers either and almost downright refuse to watch them. I've spent periods of my life drinking sodas or juices. No they don't make me eat more--in fact I might eat less. But there's a lot of calories in those types of drinks and people tend to ignore liquid calories. If you drink 2 sodas a day, a glass of juice, a fancy juice-type Starbucks drink, you've very easily added a minimum of 500 calories to your day. I've seen kids put away that kind of "liquid" per day and that's too much excess calories for a child especially. Not to mention the effects on the body of the sugar.

But, as with everything, moderation is key. I wouldn't want things banned because a few times a year I enjoy fresh squeezed OJ. A few times a year, I like to get a fancy fruit drink, and sometimes when I go on vacation I love to get a fountain-style soft drink with lots of ice!

The basic idea here is the research is showing that consuming high amounts of sugar lead to energy depletion and hunger. This is why folks gain weight from drinking it. It makes them more hungry.

The idea is to prevent chronic diseases. No one should ever get colon cancer. We don't screen for it enough or early enough. Our healthcare system isn't interested in us living for a long time. They're more concerned with treating stuff after it has occurred.

Once you have a chronic disease, then you're past the point of prevention. Now, it's just trying to have as good a life a possible before you die.

And Chadwick Boseman died of colon cancer before he even reached the recommended screening age.

Who is this Dr. Pete guy? :confused3

I don't look to YouTube for medical advice from self-proclaimed experts regardless of the subject. Almost anyone (even real doctors) can have opinions on any number of subjects, doesn't mean they are right or have the support of their peers. Most reputable medical professionals agree smoking (and vaping) can be bad for your health, but I don't see any serious efforts to ban those things.

If we are going to go down this path, we should do it fully!

We should create a single approved nutritive substance. It should provide 100% of the daily recommended vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, etc.

It should be the only item we are allowed to eat and you should not be allowed to eat more than 2000 calories of it a day.

It would eliminate world hunger and greatly relieve pressure on the world health care system.

I would be happy if HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP was banned. Since it’s introduction in the 80’s and 90’s is when the overweight problem really became a problem. As I read, look at a first grade class from 1970, then 1980, you can see the problem, as HFCS is cheaper and easier to use instead of real sugar. Just my opinion based on what I read

That's how grocery stores were when I was a kid. But they quickly changed in the 80s.

Not true. As a child of the 60's and 70's, I remember plenty of processed foods, from Hamburger Helper to Fritos to Twinkies to "space food"--Tang, anyone? Coca-cola dates back to the late 19th century, and so do canned goods. I mean actual food in a can, NOT canned-at-home vegetables. If the processing and added salt didn't kill you, the lead in the cans' solder would.

In a deleted scene from the movie "Avatar" it's revealed that pollution and climate change has killed off just about all animal and plant life on Earth, and the human population is eating algae to survive since it's the only food source left.

And yeah, there was processed food way before the 70s. Margarine first came around during World War II because of the butter rationing, complete with a packet of yellow food coloring to make it look like butter because margarine is naturally white.

Some people sure go fast to the "ban" and "mandate" hammer.

Are we going to require morning calisthenics as well?

Phones are bad for kids. Let's set a national age limit.

Carbs are bad for lots of people. Let's ban those too.

So, pray tell, Dr. Mad, what should I have done to prevent my chronic disease, which is MS?

Anxiously awaiting your answer. Hopefully it comes before I, you know, die.

LOL have a day.

The tax was started 3 years ago. It is residential zoned real estate that sells for $50m an acre that is causing some inflation. Not a sugar tax

Sin taxes are a double edged sword. Once the agency collecting the tax gets used to the money they really don't want people to stop sinning.
