My son receives SSDI for various PPD/BiPolar issues. He is currently hospitalized because of these issues and will probably be there until the end of the summer. Am I required to notify Social Security of this? I'm worried about him losing the benefits (more medical and monetary) if I report him as being hospitalized. Any input would be helpful.

I'd check for information on the Social Security website. www.ssa.gov. I believe that you can be hospitalized for a month without your checks being affected.

Unfortunately, you definately need to notify Social Security of your ds being in the hosp. if it's a month or more. Social security will find out anyways when they do a review with you (financial and/or disability review of ds).
I know everytime it came up for dd's financial review, our caseworker would send a form for me to sign that I agree to notify them of every small change in activity, finances, etc. Social security, at least where I live, is very thorough with the reviews. They double-check everything you say(think Big Brother). If you don't tell them now, when it comes the time for the review, they will deduct from his SSDI check backpay and/ or they will send an overpayment letter to you right away.
Didn't your ds's social security caseworker let you know that you need to notify them of any changes? They make a big issue where I live about that.
Also, there is a possibility you can get fined if you don't notify them of changes, says that on the form you sign that you take responsibility to notify social security of all changes.

Please keep us posted what happens. :)

I didn't realize I had a caseworker. WHen I intially went to SS to get his benefits the man was anything but helpful or knowledgeable. I have to call them anyway to correct my address (change from PO Box back to home address). I'll ask them then. I really hope it doesn't affect his benefits (monetary and health).

Could they take him off SS because he was hospitalized? That would be a huge problem since his hospital is quiete expensive (as you can imagine).

Great!

In my area, the SSI checks goes down to $30 for that month if your child is hospitalized for a month. I don't know how SS calculates that amt, but that is how it is where I live.

If his SS is suspended because he is in the hospital, it shouldn't affect his health benefits. They suspend the SS because his living expenses are being taken care of by the hospital.
There should be a Social Worker at the hospital who can help you sort everything out, but as the others mentioned, you are required to report changes in living situation.

I am a person living with mental illness. I used to be on SSDI (with a little SSI).

Meet with the hospital social worker as soon as possible. If you are your son's guardian you need to report his hospitalization if it may exceed 30 days. His SSDI payments may stop, but his Medicare should continue to help with the hospital bills. The social worker should also be able to help you with the state Medicaid forms if he may qualify.

On a happier note, I was totally disabled by mental illness for over 10 years, but with new medications and alot of determination, I have been self-supporting and lived on my own for the last 10 years. :sunny:

Feel free to PM me.
