Pretty sure this person is the one running the group for my upcoming August cruise to Alaska, and it’s really stifled any conversation amongst members. A bummer because other groups I’ve been in have been so informative!

Sadly that hasn’t been our experience with this cruise. The woman leading it approves any new posts and closes posts after she answers. It’s very strange!

I’ve gotten much, much better info from a larger generic group focused solely on DCL in alaska!

Theres so much I can say, but sadly this keeps happening.

To give a short history, which is all in the Dis archives here in the cruise section

The cruise meet groups started here on Disboards
Travel Agents abused the system and were solicitating for business
Disboards banned other travel agents from soliciting business
The travel agents moved to another platform and a network of travel agents and multiple cruisers starting creating groups for all cruises, within seconds of Disney announcements
They create the groups even if they are not booked on the cruises.
They all have the same rules and all are very anti Disboards. You can get banned without warning for just mentioning you saw something on Dis
They are linked in someway to A couple, I wont name them, but if you search you can find their names
The network connected to A couple make the cruise groups like their full time jobs, and have etsy and other online shops where their promote Fish Extender gifts.
They also wont ever mention that Fish Extender Exchanges were started here on Disboards by a member called EpcotKilterFan
They also aggressively harrass anyone who starts an alternative group for the cruise, I have personal experience of this. They want their groups to be the only group for a cruise. I was heavily pressurized to merge with them but I refused.
They call their groups the "official groups" to maintain exclusivity and gain trust with cruisers

Bummer. She'll find out the real check-in rules when the time comes and feel pretty dumb when that happens.

All of my Facebook cruise group experiences for specific cruises have been positive, with people just there to create community and share (accurate) info. The Fish Extender exchanges within them have been fun and easy to participate in.

I'm sorry it hasn't been that way for every group, but don't get discouraged as most groups aren't like what you're experiencing. I've been in 7 groups over the past 6 years and they've all been nice, so that can't be a fluke.

Totally! We had the most amazing group for our Iceland/Norway cruise in 2019, and I’m probably spoiled forever by that experience!

Not all groups are the same. I was a moderator on one and that was a thank-less task. I am usually in 5 or more groups at a time. Gets confusing. Each is different. Some try to do it by themselves and are on a power trip. Others welcome help. It’s always a good source of info most times. I will correct someone if I absolutely know it’s wrong. my Heart still belongs to disboards. 22 years with them now. Plus I have a fantastic dreams unlimited TA who takes great care of us. And my cruising addiction takes good care of her too.

We have lucked out and the person hasn't been involved in the last two cruise groups. The admin's were great and everyone was free to ask or answer questions without any heavy handed moderation. I make sure I search for her name for being a member of the group before we will join, because we have heard from others and seen how she acts in other groups.

Unfortunately the lady that we are referencing is on a power trip. As some have stated, she will kick you out of any group that she is involved in if you question her or mention this forum. If there is a cruise group set up for a certain group and she is not part of it, she has been known to try and pressure that groups admins to allow her to join and be made an admin of the group so she can force her rules on that group.

oh I know exactly who this person is. I actually joined that group early on and didn’t stay long. The first time I casually said, I’ll have my TA take care of something, she was quick to scold me for mentioning that I had a TA. Then she would pass bad or incorrect info and close the post. I didn’t stick around and left. With all my cruises, I’ve been lucky to never have sailed with her, or ever be in a group with her. Also when I was briefly in that group, she had only cruised 2-3 times and was only a silver….no expert at all. No one is. i feel like I learn something new everytime I cruise.
