Big debate in my house. DD is going to play travel soccewr this year. My DW and i are debating how to best wear shin guards. She has the kind that have a strap under the foot to keep in place. One of us thinks the sock goes on firast and then the shin guard and the top of the sock is pulled over. The other diagrees that the shin guard goes on first then the sock.

A dinner made and served by the other spouse rides on this.

:cool1:

I can't answer as to the official way to wear this as I have seen girls do it both ways. My daughter actually puts on one pair of socks, then puts her shin guards on and then puts another pair of socks on after that because she needs the extra padding on her feet and also her ankles.

Just buy the all-in-one shin guard socks. The shin guard is slipped inside the sock so you don't have to deal with two different things. :)

I played in high-school and I also ref leagues. In our league shin guards are not to be exposed at all. This is due to some being made of hard plastic and the chance of an opposing player getting hurt by the plastic is there. If the plastic has a small crack someone could get cut. A layer of sock does seem to cut down on some of these types of injuries. Another reason to have them covered with the teams matching socks is that it makes it easier to discern who has the ball and who is doing what when refereeing. Opposing players might have the same shin guards but different color socks which could make it hard to figure out who did what. When I played I always played with 2 pairs of socks on...one under and one over.

Shin guards go on first then socks. As stated no part of the shin guards may be exposed. However many Rec leagues dont push this. I have coached for 6 years and when asked this I always tell them shin guards first just to be safe.

Long Island Junior Soccer League, The governing body of Travel Soccer on Long Island has the rule that Shin Guard must not be exposed, thus covered by the Sock. I would make sure that the Team Uniform about $ 150.00 has socks that are long enough to cover the shin gaurd if pulled over, if not than Shin Guard first and then Sock. I have found that the Kevlar ( Bullet Proof Vest Material works the best. I recomend the one peice that slips on under the foot, as this secures the protective piece that covers the ankle also they are quite light weight.

You might want to check with the profesional $ 200.00 per season trainer (remember there is a spring and fall season) that your team will have, or see if they can be used during the $ 200.00 Winter season, or the $ 200.00 Trainers Summer Camp. Also check to make sure your local club is not thinking about changing travel uniforms with the friendly kick back Team Uniform Supply Company.

Sorry for the Editorial, But to play travel soccer on Long Island these days, after the $ 100.00 regestration fee you are looking at about $ 1,000 investment to keep up with the other teams.

My DD wore 2 pairs of socks. One athletic sock under and the "team" colored socks over.

DS played 3 seasons of soccer (Fall rec, Winter indoor, Spring travel) and he wears shinguards first, and socks over. We actually also just picked up a pair of the all in one sock/shin guard combo as well, since he did 2 weeks of soccer camp, and I could not imagine how GROSS his guards were going to get if he had to wear them everyday.

We used to do the sock first, shinguard, then fold over sock combo, but last fall found out that the shinguard needs to go on first, then the sock. A senior ref told us that is the rule. It took DD some getting used to- and the shinguards get mighty smelly when worn right next to the skin- but that is the right way to wear them. I second the "all in one shinguard inside the sock" solution- keeps the shinguard fresher.

I played for 10 years growing up. For practices I would normally just put them over my socks but for games I worn an ankle sock, then shin guard, and then my soccer socks.

When my brothers both played, it was shin guard first, then team colored sock on outside.

Shin guard first and the sock covers. I am a referee and I always make players fix this before the game. For players that put the shin guard over the socks and then pull the sock over, it does not stay covered all game.

So whoever said shin guard first and then socks is 100%. I am a licensed referee and coach.

The shin guards go under the socks. The club's web site had links to our region (Ohio South here) Our club like many others is a member of USYSA, so yours might be affiliated with them too. So who has been served?

Shin guard first and then sock. Just checked w/BIL who knows and plays soccer w/a v. famous British soccer player.

ETA -- no offense to DS9, who saw this post and tells me this is how he has always done it, too!

DD has Just been using the Slip-ins for a few years now on all of her teams she plays for.

But Socks have to be over the final result reguardless of what kind you choose in my area.

Right now she is in training camp with the Baltimore BLAST days camp. They have 4 players rotate in during the week and this was brought up by one of the younger kids. They all said here it doesn't matter as no real contact will be happening but they should always be covered.

They mostly wear the slip-ins while playing indoors.

My son is 9 and has been playing soccer since he was 5 and they always have to have the shin guard covered by the sock. So shin guards then socks.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I will be cooking and serving dinner to DW. :confused3
