Soccer parents question

DS is playing soccer this fall. He's 4.5. I'm wondering what they do when it gets colder. We're in NC and the games go through the end of October. Do your kids wear a long sleeve tshirt under their uniforms or do they stay warm enough in their uniforms without? I just want to go ahead and have everything we need now. I like being prepared.

We are in NC too. When DS was little most games it was warm enough to not need another shirt but for a early am game, late in the season, we did sometimes add a white long sleve t-shirt shirt.

DGS starts next year so we will be doing it all again!!!

I always buy the kids either white or black long sleeve shirt for under uniforms. We've also done sweats under shorts too. Especially for spring soccer.

My kids have also played in hats and gloves

Last year, when my DD was 9, she played in the fall for one season through our county. I got her a long sleeve black under armour type shirt at Target, and she wore that under her shirt (their uniform was black - yuck on hot days!). Some kids wore sweats under their shorts, but when running around, that is a bit hot. You can get long sleeve shirts in other colors (to match your uniform) at some stores like Target (didn't want to pay Under Armour prices, no offense they are great, but to wear a couple of times is silly). They are wearing long socks and shin guards already, so their legs usually stay warm.

We're in NJ and by Nov. the kids are in turtlenecks under jerseys, with gloves and earwarmers!

We bought a knockoff Under Armor shirt for DS to wear under his jersey, and he wears the long socks, so his legs are mostly covered. One game in early November was spitting snow flurries a couple years ago, he wore warm-up pants for that one. They also wear hats for some of the cold games.

We're in MA. My kids are 5 and we play through through mid Nov. (end if we have rainouts to makeup) Long sleve shirt under the jersey, sweats and/or lined nylon pants are the norm by Oct. We might have full sweatshirts under the jerseys with hats/gloves and ear muffs by the end of Nov. We're just not supposed to cover the jersey with coats/jackets but I've seen that done too.

The biggest tip: bring yourself a nice big hot coffee to watch those games.

We are in Ohio and it does get cold during our soccer season. Last year we were lucky and it stayed warm enough without long sleeves and pants because my ds refuses to wear them. Yesterday, both kids had 9 am games - I wore shorts and it was quite chilly watching - however after the game, the kids were sweaty - especially the kids on ds8's team. Even if the temps are cool, remember that the kids are running a lot.

Yes, pp is totally right. Layers for the kids are key, and make sure they can be easily removed. That means pants that can come off over cleats with shorts underneath.

When I played I just usually wore a long sleeve shirt while playing, and on the sidelines/during halftime I wore my warmups.

For my son though if we play and its going to be cold I'll have him in a long sleeve shirt and pants, but I expect the pants would be hot after running for a while. We have our first game later this week and go to the end of october also.

Since your child is so young, you could just pick up some under armour clothes. Most leagues will allow the little ones to wear long sleeved shirts, sweat pants, gloves & hats. Once they get older, they will only wear their jackets when they're on the sides and will play with just their jerseys & shorts (brrrrrr!!). But that won't happen until the teen years, so you have a long time to worry about that. lol.

My dd would also wear 2 pairs of socks sometimes. If the field was all muddy & wet and they still had to play, we would get creative with baggies over her socks to keep her feet dry!

My son is now 17 yrs old and has played soccer since a little one. He will not wear long pants, but will wear a long sleeved turtle neck type shirt under his soccer jersey, they do let the kids wear gloves and stocking type hats too. They biggest thing they worry about is zippers and pockets, not allowed to have them while playing soccer. We are in Ohio, and by the time the end of October get here it is darn cold whether on the field or parent watching the kids play.

One tip I got from a seasoned soccer player when my son was young, when you purchase shin guards, get the kind with ankle protection, and keep up with your child as they grow. I can not tell you have many of these older kids get hurt because they are still wearing the same shin guards gotten as 5 yr olds with no ankle protection. Believe me they do not protect your kids after 10 or more yrs of growth.

Soccer mom for 7 years!! We buy under armor for each girl, and sweat pants for really cold days or snow (happened to us on picture day...girls look freezing, but it's the coolest picture) Also we have instant hand warmers in our soccer bags just in case, can be bought at costco in a large box during Fall/Winter time!!!

Walmart normally carries the long sleeve like like under armour type shirts and I get these for my kids for under their jerseys. My girls normally don't wear anything on their legs and my 11 year old actually hates the long sleeved shirts but she does give in. You can use sweat pants under their shorts. The magic gloves are good for little hands as well and those are fairly inexpensive. Also if you are worried about cold ears, The ear covers are good and don't let the kids overheat too much.

Also, try to avoid anything with hoods. It the child has a hood on hanging out from his shirt he/she is at risk for another child grabbing and pulling it. It has happened so in our league we make sure the hoods are under the shirt if that is how the parents dressed the child. One of the girls my son used to play with actually had kids grabbing her pony tail and pulling that as they could not catch her otherwise. Her hair is now short and she plays on the highschool team.
