Did he by chance have an asthma attack from the scents that get sprayed? I have read of a few people having their asthma (sorry I'm not sure what the correct terminology is) flare up because of the scents. And I'm not trying to downplay any few of heights that he has at all, I hope that I'm wording what I'm trying to say right.
His triggers are mold, dust, and outdoor pollen but I suppose the scents could could have bothered him. But he has always had a problem with emotions triggering attacks. Like if he gets into trouble or something like that, so I really think the emotional stress is what brought on the asthma attack.
I rode it at California Adventure( I assume it is the same ride) anyway, i liked it but i wouldn't wait in line for it again. I guess it's because i sat on the end, i could see the edge of the screen and kinda took away the illusion.
I took my 7 yr old ds on this, not really knowing much about it. He got really nervous as we were seated (ok we both did) we were in the front row and just saw this big screen in front of us. As we started he looked really panicked ! and gripped my arm through the whole thing. I could'nt really see his face, (so dark) so I decided to just sit back and enjoy when we were exiting he said let's go again !!!!!
I am not a big fan of heights but I really and more freaked out with being closed in. Is there a seat or location better then another? Or should I skip this one!!
I am thoroughly looking forward to riding Soarin. It has always been a dream of mine to parachute or go hand gliding, but I've never had the guts and now that I have a family, I probably wouldn't go anyway... This will probably be the closest I ever come to doing those things.
I did ride Soarin despite shaking like a leaf (but I wasn't going to let everyone know how scared I was). The CM told me he would put me in row 3 (or whatever the lowest one was). But the lines got messed up and I ended up in the highest one. I was holding on for dear life. Didn't help that the 4 yr old girl sitting next to me was squirming all over in her seat. I just knew she was going to fall out. I enjoyed it (the orange grove part was so cool) but I probably won't do it again. I just couldn't relax enough to fully appreciate it. To me it seemed like we were on that ride for an hour!

You can look around and see all the other people. The thing that made me nervous was that when you lift up, you go forward, like you're going into the screen. That's when I had to look around at the other people to get my bearings so it didn't feel like the screen was closing in on me.

I agree with GC&S about the first part of the ride, but after that, it was just like you were floating in the air...it was GREAT! One of the best rides I've been on in Disney. And it doesn't even really feel like you are that high anyways. Just watch the screen and enjoy! I would definitely try it out and just asked to be seated at the level that goes the lowest. Have fun either way!
