I have ridden Soarin probably 50 times between the Calif and World versions. Neither me nor my DW has ever gotten anything close to motion sickness. She never gets any kind of motion sickness anywhere. I only get it on Star Tours and it only last for like 10-15 minutes.

We rode Soarin this morning Dec 7 around 8:30AM. On the theater on the left. Section B1.

We both really enjoyed it and commented to each other during the ride how powerful all the smells were. Much stronger than normal. By the end of the ride we were feeling sick. It lasted for 2+ hours.

My DW is a registered nurse and noted it would be very strange for both of us to get motion sickness on Soarin for the first time ever both on the same actual ride. She speculated that the strong new smells is what made us feel sick.

We stopped by Guest Services to tell them what happened just in case there was something wrong. We wanted to make sure they had our experience documented.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

A few details from the "behind the scenes" tour (a DVC perk):
  • The smells are produced by passing air though canisters (~liter) containing some chemical beads (or crystals).
  • While I don't recall the exact interval, the canisters are in place for long periods (perhaps weeks).
  • The ventilation system is oversized (even for the large building) to quickly exchange the air, and allow the smells to change between "locations".
Perhaps the canisters were just changed, or the ventilation system was not working properly.

I remember one time the smells were overpowering and I felt a little sick. I don't remember lingering effects though.

I ride frequently, but wait for a seat in the middle section as the outside is too nauseating for me. I do get motion sick, but mostly on this ride (fine on Star Tours though). I have to hold my breath during some of the scents such as dirts and grass and even the ocean and Taj Mahal is a bit too chemical for me. Sometimes the scents are more overpowering than others, so what Nonsuch said makes scents (haha) to me. It usually take 30-60 minutes for me to recover after this one.

I suffer from vertigo also and stay off thing that spin as well. I was always fine one on the old Soaring though. Miss those scents and non-distorted images!!

How was the air-quality yesterday with the fires? Could bad quality air plus the stronger smells on the ride have caused the problem?

Hope you and your wife are otherwise having a great trip!

Air quality was fine overall. It smelled a little smoky in the morning but that was all.
