We are planning our first trip to WDW and are trying to make a game plan for Epcot. Is Soarin' the same ride as at California Adventures?

Same. Yes.

The attraction is the same, however, the queue at DCA and the appropriate placement in California makes it seem like a different experience. I liked it better at CA.

The airplane hanger and shorter queue are all that are different in DCA. Although I swear the Cali version seemed better maintained to me.

They are the same ride mechanism and the same experience. However... I definitely have noticed that the scents (pine and orange) are much stronger at the WDW version. Every time we go to DL/DCA (which is much more than WDW), we notice that the smells are so much more faint than WDW's version.

I never understood why the Cali version carried over to FL. I'm sure there is much more to producing the movie than I am aware of, but in the time it took to build the theater Id think disney could have done a new movie. It's very out of place.

Except for the few absolute California landmarks, to most people it could be anywhere in the US. The Golden Gate and Disneyland are without a doubt California. The fly over LA is really not identifiable if you have never been there, it could be any big city. There are mountains, rivers and oceans on either coast and buttes and deserts in Arizona and other places. So I think that they just thought that it didn't really matter and for most people, it doesn't.

When Patrick does his speech ahead of the flight, he does leave out the word California. In WDW it is just known as Soarin instead of Soarin over California.

I totally agree! The WDW screen always seems to be dusty or something. For me it is a much better experience at DCA.

That said, it is my favorite ride, so for me it's a must-do at either park!

They come out with a new IMAX film every week at our local Science Center so it's not hard to do. You could even film it in a way that you didn't have to reprogram the seat movements. Load in 3 different scents and bingo!!!

Of course I would have just settled for them cleaning the huge dust bunnies off the film. One can dream.;)
