I took my own advice this year and continued to try to beat the current, reserved price for a car rental pretty much up until departure. Once I settled on Alamo, I joined the Quicksilver program, which had a few things going for it (not that it is different from other car rental agency programs):
We zipped out of the terminal (carry on luggage only - for a 2 week, 4 resort stay - now that's planning!), selected a red Impala (they had a Toyota Camry (only seated 4), Buick something (smelled of smoke), etc. - but we needed to be able to fit up to 6 people at a time) and were on our way.
Painless, quick and reasonable process. Clean, decent car in good condition. Sold.
- it was free
- it allowed me to bypass the regular line - which is daunting for Alamo, since they are Disney's preferred supplier / business partner and always have a long line
- it allowed me to bypass any sales pitch for extras such as insurance, as they were pre-selected as part of the Quicksilver sign-up process
