soaked suitcases and trashbag linings

This was January 10 in Miami upon embarkation on the Magic. It was a friend of someone on a social media cruise group I'm on.

That would be a bummer! I would think that the crusie company would offer to wash the clothes in those bags free of charge.

I didn't hear any followup on the situation. I'm fairly certain that the people handling the baggage work for the port, not for DCL. That said, I can't imagine DCL wouldn't help those folks out in some way.

This happened in Barcelona last July after a 12 night Greek Isles sailing. Our friends' suitcases ended up in the water. They said by the time they arrived home in the USA, everything inside had a horrible odor.

If it is anything like the Galveston dump DCL did last November, you will be fighting for months. The port only gave out $400 and I think that was for 1 piece of luggage. DCL said travel insurance should cover the rest, so it was a fight that lasted over a month before DCL settled the rest of the bill. I feel bad for those on my last cruise as it happened to 2 of them from another site and we have just been following the ordeal.

Yep, that was us. It was raining almost sideways when we got to PC. My guess is that the bag was at the top of a cart as our other 2 bags were OK.

Also, I've never seen winds like we had on Castaway on Sunday. The ship docked at Midnight the night before just so it could get in. All activities (save the 5k) were cancelled and no one was allowed in the water.

Bummer! But interesting. What happened the next day at CC? Did you stay there docked and look at it from the ship or what?

I use the giant ziploc bags. They are XXL or Jumbo on the packaging. You can pack the clothes in them for departure and then use them for dirty clothes while traveling. It works out great :)
Are yall using regular brand name Ziploc bags or something made for packing/ vacuuming the air out? Where do you buy them? I don't know that I have ever seen ziplocs big enough to pack in in my grocery.

Space Saver Bags from ziplock.

Target sells them and I buy the Ziplock brand 4X. The come four in a box for around $7.

I like the 2 gallon size ziploc bags for packing, I fold my clothes carefully, slip 'em in the ziploc and sit on the bag and zip it up! Flatter than a flitter! LOL!!! I've done this for a lot of years and it works great. Sometimes the 2 gallon bags are a little hard to find so I usually get 2 boxes when I find them. I like them better than the space bags because most of the space bags are quite pricey. And I've had little to no better performance out of them as opposed to the giant ziploc variety.

Along the baggage ending up in the water theme, DH and I went on a weekend away on the Dream less than 2 weeks ago. After we got into our stateroom (before leaving port), we sat on our verandah which faced the port and watched all the busy-ness of loading up the ship. We watched a guy that was like the rock star of driving one of those fork lifts and moving those big luggage carts onto the ship. He had it down to an art form! He could drive that thing backward and forward so fast and accurately he had us almost applauding. I should have videoed it because it was like watching a video game! :worship: This was of course at Port Canaveral. Don't know how much influence DCL has on the folks that work the terminal and port for them, but I've always been pretty impressed. Now it's those OTHER ports that sometimes scare me…...

We were on the Dream cruise that just ended Monday. Our luggage was also soaked-clothing and shoes that were literally waterlogged. I mentioned this to our stateroom host-the only time we saw him-because having the wet suitcases on the bed soaked the bedding. He offered an off-handed apology & said he would change bed linens later.

Fast forward to the day we were packing to disembark...I was packing my kids' clothes (I had made them unpack themselves on Friday) and most of their clothes were STILL WET (having been thrown in the drawers wet in the haste to get to activities, I guess). So we put damp, mildewy clothes into still damp suitcases.

I'm happy to report that we had an amazing time overall on the cruise & this was the only negative issue we had. I will definitely be packing in plastic from this trip forward!

Ugh, the wet clothes thing sounds icky MouseTrip07. Sorry you had to deal with that but happy to hear you had a fabulous time anyway! I do swear by those ziplocs, and especially after the issue I had described in my first post in this thread. Who would've thought a downpour could blow through the zipper of a carbon fiber hard case suitcase? :headache: A great attitude like yours can save many a vacation mishap, MouseTrip! :cutie:

I use the XL Ziploc Travel bags. They are designed so you can roll out the air (or sit on them to squish the air out!) and do not require a vaccuum like regular space bags. Originally I used them on our 12 night Med cruise to reduce the amount of luggage we had to carry. But after hearing reports of rain soaked luggage from the airport or spilled liquids getting all over checked items, I continue to use them for all our trips. I even toss a dryer sheet in each bag so the clothes smell nice and fresh and don't have any suitcase smells when we unpack.

I use the garbage tip and it has saved me a few times. I use it for all vacations. On the way back I use the bags for our dirty clothes. I put our suitcase under the bed, open up the bag and place our clothes at the end of the night into the suitcase. By the last day I am almost packed.

We put the bag in the ottoman storage box in front of the couch and put dirty clothes in there.

Now here is a question on keeping water from getting to your clothes from my Galveston cruise last November. At the end of the cruise the workers dumped a whole container of luggage in the harbor. I also see they did this before a cruise leaving Miami last week. How do you keep your clothes dry when your luggage is swimming:lmao:?

With these bags, there is a weatherproof seal so when you close the bag, nothing can get wet, including floating in the ocean....... There is no zipper. Ive used these for years and watched other bags get drenched in the rain and when we got our bags the outside was wet but everything inside was completely dry.

What brand is that?

We docked at Midnight, just to get in. It was sunny in the morning, but very, very windy. All excursions were cancelled that day. Ran the 5k and went back to the ship. After a quick shower, Jimmy came on to tell us that a storm was coming and would last about 45 minutes, but that it should clear after that. He was right, it came a flood!

We went out to the island about 1pm when the rain stopped. Looked like a hurricane had been through almost. Lots of palm fronds down and sand all over the walkways. At this point, they weren't letting anyone in the water. At least the rain packed the sand down so we didn't get sandblasted. We ate at Cookies Too with about 5 other people. It was like we had the island to ourselves. As there wasn't much to do, we went back to the ship about 2:30.
