BUDGET BACKLASH: Thousands Rally At City Hall

Taxpayers Furious With Budget Cuts Take Frustration To Streets Of NYC

Organizers Say 50,000 On Hand For 'Rally For New York'

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A massive budget backlash came to lower
Manhattan on Thursday. Tens of thousands of New Yorkers marched on City Hall, rallying to stop proposed funding cuts.

The rally cries of labor unions, community groups and families outside City Hall could be heard throughout lower Manhattan. Desperation for an economic lifeline brought out more than 50,000 people along several blocks of Broadway in a self-described "Rally For New York."

Their message for Gov. David Paterson came in the form of booming chants:

"No more cuts! No more cuts!"

Everyday New Yorkers had their own personal messages for the governor as well.

"Governor Paterson, I wish you could have an open heart that we are going to suffer if this budget cut goes through," said China Lankford of Jamaica.

Paterson has proposed closing a $15 billion state budget gap by making cuts across the board, including $2.5 billion in education, $3.2 billion in health care and billions more in cuts to vital programs such as senior services, disability services, housing assistance and crisis intervention programs.

Protestors insisted Thursday that there's a better way. They're asking for what they call "fair tax reform" -- raising state taxes for New Yorkers making $250,000 or more on top of the president's proposed hikes.

Here is the dilemma: you have millions of people who are used to handouts from the government. That's great when times are good but times aren't good anymore. Do you think these people care? Heck no, they aren't paying for it in the first place. So they just think they can raise taxes on the rich (the rich, in this case, meaning anybody other than them) and everything will be hunkydory again.

Mayor Bloomberg, who knows a little about how the system works, doesn't agree. Not to long ago he pointed out that about 40,000 people are paying the majority of the taxes in this city of 8 million. When you are outnumbered like that it's tough to get a break. Ahh, but this isn't America, it's just New York, which means those people can pack up and go. If just a few thousand decided to leave the effect would be devestating.

So, if you want a sneak peak at what's about to happen in America as a whole keep an eye on New York. It should be very educational and entertaining, in a black comedic sort of way.

How many times can you raise taxes on the $250,000 class before they can no longer afford their mortgages and to live? If they are the target of tax hikes they will start needing bail outs too. Are the "not rich" people going to want to bail them out?

Well since they make their money off of the middle class and screw us 10 ways till Sunday, I am fine with it.

Payback sucks.

Don't you guys listen to Aerosmith? It's EAT the Rich!!! :lmao:

I would love to know how you figure people making over $250,000 in this country screw you?:confused3 Because they busted their butts, got an education, have a good job, were responsible and lived within their means? Please help me understand.

And probably hired and created jobs for those that are so willing to see them get "screwed".

How do they screw the middle class exactly? Espeically people making over $250,000 in NYC specifically (which here, really isn't all that much)...

A good deal of the $250,000 people are small business owners who supply 70% of the jobs in the US. If small businesses owners and the "rich" get tax hikes the middle class will pay by losing massive amounts of jobs.

All you folks that disagree are not real Christians in my book. You do not care about helping out those in need in America.

What?

And your payback sucks comment is nothing more than a desire to get even. And that's a Christian attitude?

If you are going to start your inane threads lashing out like "soak the rich" expect some crap back.
Frankly I am sick of it.

Jealousy is an ugly emotion. Hope it made you feel better to get it off your chest.

Not everyone is Christian and I don't see what anything has to do with being a good Christian. There are many ways to help people and most of them do not include government handouts.
