So You Think You Can Dance Season 6

I thought Nathan and Mollee danced really poorly this week...way beyond salsa not being their thing. They weren't together at all-it was just a mess. It really seemed unfair to others that they were not in the bottom three. I know that is how the show works, but I think it put Nigel over the edge, especially considering the comment by Nathan on Tuesday. I didn't think Pauline and Peter's performance was anything great, so I was okay with them going home.

I don't really have any favorites this year either. At the beginning I kind of liked Ryan and could not stand Ashleigh. Now I can't stand him and she is kind of growing on me (at least her dancing is)!

There are a lot of new choreographers and most of them aren't wowing me. I really think part of this blah season has to do with Mia being gone. Did they ever say anything on the show about her not being there this year?

Trashy is a good way to describe her. I'm sure she's not actually a trashy lady and it's probably unfair to categorize her as such but hey...

I'm sure she is a lovely human being. And I know she has no say in her wardrobe or choreography on the show, which is the majority of the problem. They are trying to define her as the sexpot. I'm sure she is very talented and frankly deserves better than the trashy persona that the show is pushing.

Well, I watched portions of the results show. Opted to not bother with the competition show this week.

My observations:

1. The bottom three--totally the judges and producers of the show's fault. I think that the first 2 weeks with the judges picking (and us disagreeing with much of their choices), is not how this competition operates. So I think they made their bed and now they get to lie in it. They don't like the bottom three--it's probably retaliation from the last 2 weeks of nonsense and I have no sympathy for them.

Sure--other dancers may have deserved to be in the bottom 3--well that is what America thought for the past TWO weeks. No pity party from me.

2. The solos--oh.my.gosh. I knew sort of what to expect after reading here that they would not be good, but they were so SELF-INDULGENT it was ridiculous. It was like watching the "hey look at me" show. Between Elanores ridiculous wave to the audience and Peter's (the tapper?) indulgent "give me claps wave"--YUCK YUCK YUCK! They were very underwhelming and then when Nigel mentioned the top 4 of last season and how the solos weren't up to snuff, I was like--"You tell it, Nigel!" It remeinds me back of season 1 or 2, where contestants were "winging it" and Nigel said ENOUGH! back then as well.

3. The group number--was weird and I can't believe the majority of the dance was without 3 dancers who popped in for what..the last 12 seconds? What was that about. I was actually counting dancers b/c first it was 10, then they brought on 4 or 5 more and I was spending the time trying to figure out who was missing. I get featuring dancers, I don't get why they omit dancers for a significant portion of the routine. For what it was worth it was the Husband and Wife, so maybe there was a reason. I could not figure out who the 3rd person was.

Hopefully next week is better. Even last season with all the great dancers, I didn't feel greatness (though the solos were pretty good.)

The egos need to kick it down a notch and no, I am not referring to just Nathan and Mollee.

I'm sure she is very talented and frankly deserves better than the trashy persona that the show is pushing.

Which makes it ever more ironic that she is getting criticized by Nigel for intimidating young viewers.

She didn't ask to be the sex kitten, but b/c she has excellent hip movement and flexibility for other types of movement, they keep focusing on that.

I mean, they expect a contemporary dancer to go "buck" for a hip hop number, why are they not expecting that she cannot tone down the sexuality for numbers that are not her style. This is not her fault, but the fault of the choreographers.

Does anyone know if the choreographers work with wardrobe. I assume they do b/c clearly numbers like Crash Test Dummies from last season and the van gogh starry night piece of this season, the costume was very much critical to the character of the piece.

If that is the case, then once again shame on the choreographers. She doesn't need to dance that way for all styles.

(I remember Nigel commenting on the contemporary dances split jetes and teling the choreographers that just b/c a dancer CAN do it, doesn't mean they should in every dance. Same deal for Karen. Sex pot in every number is not needed. We get it--she dances sexy, she appears sexy. Let's see what else she can be.)

You know, Nigel has a pretty tough job. Everyone has favorite dancers, nobody wants people to go home. He's genuinely trying to improve the overall level of dance--I think it's very rude for the audience to boo. He's trying to be constructive. If you don't know where you went wrong, how can you fix it? That's true in anything.

IT may be rude, but I do feel they are coached to do that.

Hoot and holler for what you like and when the judges say something nice and boo when they say something you don't like.

And there are occasions where another judge will disagree with a judges negative assessment and that just sends the audience wild.

I think the judges are fully aware of it and their reactions are somewhat....embellished if you will.

There have been many times this season when DH & I have agreed with Nigel's criticism. And when the audience boos, I just wish someone would jump up there and yell "You got it right, Nigel!" I realize that will never happen because the crowd would probably attack that person, but so many times this year, we have done nothing but agree with Nigel!

I just watched tonight's show and I thought it was so much better than last week.

I'm still on the Legacy/Kathryn bandwagon! I loved their routine and they seem to have good chemistry together. I look forward to seeing their dance every week. He dances with such joy and passion and I think she's just a beautiful dancer.

Channing was a nice surprise this week. Her personality finally came through. I've been waiting to see that. I also thought it was an interesting dance.

I was irritated with Nigel for telling Karen he didn't like her as much when she's not a sex kitten. I thought it was nice to see that she's still a great dancer when she's not sexing the joint up. I felt bad for her. I like Kevin better than her though.

This also makes me wonder more about "the luck of the draw". Last week he said Karen intimidated the viewers because she was too sexy. So this week she gets a style and number that would never work with sexy. Was it a ploy to keep her there longer? Did he mention they might be the couple in trouble hoping it would spur people to vote for them (like reverse psychology)?

Ryan and Elenore's number was beautiful! Their lifts and movements looked effortless! Travis is showing himself to be really amazing! I miss Mia but to have him choreograph more is a real treat. I hope we see lots more from him this season.

Noelle and Russell's foxtrot was fun! SYTYCD often loses me on the waltz and foxtrot but I really enjoyed their dance. I think the song choice was a big part of the success of that dance too.

I think this week shows how important the choreography is. I thought it stank last week and most of the dances/dancers were underwhelming. This was a much better week.

Another good example of song choice and choreography was Nathan and Mollie. I really like them but I'm glad the judges made their comments to them. Nathan is one of my favorites but he does seem to need to be brought back down a little.

Jakob can do whatever is thrown at him. Ashley is still growing on me and I liked their routine better the second time I watched it. Has Ashley ever said what her illness was? Good for her for coming back in a big way after so long.

I think the bottom will be Karen and Kevin, Channing and Victor, and I'm not really sure for the last couple. I really liked what they all did and it's getting to the point that I'll hate to see anyone go. I hope Kevin stays this week, but I really wouldn't be too sad to see any of the others I mentioned go. I just don't connect with Karen and Channing is taking too long to really show herself. Victor is a good dancer but another I find forgettable at the end of the day.

I think who should go is Karen & Kevin. The judges were absolutely correct that the choreography was wonderful, but there was very minimal performance quality. The song & the choreo alone carry you more than halfway there. They simply brought nothing to it. It was unfortunate that Karen received such a mixed message about being trampy -- er, sexy. If they stay in the competition, I don't think she'll ever cage the tigress again. Please by all that's holy, let them be voted off & spare the audience.

Nathan & Mollee were very fortunate to once again have the final dance of the night, including a song that's getting lots of attention right now. Luck of the draw? I don't believe that for a second. It had a few 8-counts of good, but the rest, not so much. Simply could not believe Nigel's assessment of Nathan's abilities. Could not believe he assesses Nathan's physical abilities so supreme when Jakob is in the competition. Oh, I forgot, Jakob gets praise, rather back-handed praise, when continually he has been the dance in his partnership. Yet he reliably does a great job week after week, yet his posing partner gets 90% of the praise, despite only actually dancing weeks into the show?

IMO the producers need to take several giant steps back from micromanaging the partnerships, dance styles assigned, songs & costuming. After watching faithfully since season one & literally missing less than a handful of shows, it's becoming painfully obvious, despite the disclaimer at the end of the show denying the same about the partnerships & dance styles. It wasn't so tightly produced the first couple of seasons and that was a huge part of the magic.

I like the guys so much more than the girls. I wish the final 4 could be all male.

I adore Jakob and I have to admit that Ashleigh was good, too.

Legacy has won me over...OMG, how hot was that dance?

I didn't love Ryan and Elenore's dance as much as the judges did but I liked it.

Nathan is one good looking young man.

Russell is joy to watch. I fear they'll be in the bottom, however, because their dance didn't have the hip quality of some of the others.

Last night's show was finally a step up.

Karen and Kevin were not good and deserve to go. IMO they have consistently underperformed all season. I find them both terribly unlikable.

My favorite of the night was Ellenore and Ryan which, had everything to do with Travis. He really brought out something special in both of them. He is cliche and she is forgettable but under Travis, they both shined.

Heaven help me but my 2nd fav of the night was Legacy and Kathryn. He has really grown into something special. I'm glad they softened the whole faux gang sign throwing b-boy image. She was forgettable in Vegas so I'm glad she is getting the chance and wasn't cut earlier.

Finally, I really enjoyed Jakob and Ashleigh. He has always been amazing but she has really started to grow on me. She is really stepping up to the challenge. I'm dying to know what is wrong with Ashleigh. I know that sounds terrible but quit talking about it if you aren't going to tell us what it is!

Everyone else was sort of forgettable to me. I've completely forgotten Mollee and Nathan's dance already. I remember enjoying Russell and Noelle, at least I think I did. Channing and Victor were good but Tyce is almost as big of a 'kiss of death' as the quickstep is. He should leave the quirky numbers to Wade.

I think the bottom 3 will be Russell and Noelle, Karen and Kevin, and Channing and Victor, but Mollee and Nathan deserve to be there.

Was this the top 14? Am I totally forgetting someone?

Unless the judges speech swayed voters and Karen and Kevin are not in the bottom 3, they should (and will) go.

Poor Karen - who styled her last night? They took her from sexy almost to the point of slutty all the way to dowdy. Her hair and dress and entire look were terrible last night. Poor thing never gets to just look normal.

I hate it when the judges talk about dancers deifinitely making the top 10. I think the public hates that and it's bad for those dancers.

If the question about Ashleigh was directed at me, here goes -- and if it wasn't, I guess just hit delete or whatever. Until last night she had not danced, merely posed & vamped it up, while Jakob did all the work. She did a credible job last night, but IMO that's all it was, certainly not amazing.

I sure hope Russell & Noelle don't wind up in bottom three, and certainly don't wind up going home. They knocked it out of the park, as far as dance and performance quality go.

I started finding Tyce very grating personality-wise some time ago. I actually thought the number last night was good, made all the better because I thought Victor, and particularly Channing, rose to the occasion. The music was off-putting for me, just like Adam & Nigel expressed.

No, the life threatening illness they keep mentioning. What was wrong with her? Why was she sick? I know it is none of my business but she is bring it up and the show keeps mentioning it. I'm just annoyed for purely selfish reasons that they aren't saying what happened. She obviously doesn't have to but then I'd wish they would stop talking about it.

Not really sure what the situation was and I don't know that I've ever heard it explained either. Kind of odd now that I think about it. I guess you're right, either be forthcoming or zip it altogether.

I hope Russell and Noelle don't end up in the bottom 3 because I'm afraid they might get rid of Noelle over Karen since they seem to like her so much.

Tyce drives me crazy. He's so over the top and tries too hard to be cute and funny. Blech!

Here's how I think people vote:

1. On looks and personality
2. On how much they liked the dance

3. distant third - dance technique
Face it, most of us can't judge good technique - even if we have years of tap or ballet, for example, we don't know good ballroom technique.

I wish they'd have a season where they secretly agreed to pay all of the top 20 a set salary to be guinea pigs. If they chose 10 technically perfect dancers and each time gave them dorky dances and frumpy costumes, and chose 10 barely competent dancers and each time gave them way cool dances with flattering costumes...what do you bet that the 10 barely competent dancers would be the top 10?

I have to agree with you on this, especially when you take into account the average age of the studio audience. Most of them are girls that look like they're between the ages of 12-16. I must assume that the same age group makes up most of the voters. I think this is the reason that some dancers with really good technique have been voted off in most seasons, because these voters are voting for what's pleasing to their eyes when the dancers are standing still, not when they're doing their routines.

That's probably true for younger girls. It wouldn't be for me. I would vote by dance first (but for me that would probably include what I think is good technique) then looks and personality would be last.

I think I'm in the minority but I really loved Kayla last season. I may not know if she always had the best lines or proper technique, but I knew when I watched her that she was amazing. I also loved Brandon. Neither of them had really outgoing personalities, but I often thought they were the best.
