So why do dogs spin in circles before they lay down?

I am going to hijack this thread and say that our cat drags the water dish across the kitchen floor. Drives me nuts! Either I wake up in the middle of the night to hear the dragging or I walk through a puddle as I go to get my first cup of coffee.

That's ok, my dogs drag the cat across the floor. I always think they are hurting him, but they are just playing. The dumb cat lets them do it.

It's left over from when they were wild animals. They turn around in circles to make sure there are no predators. Kinda boring, but that's what they say!

I have also heard its to tamp down the grass.

All of our Bichons do it (our Standard Poodle does it too....). One Bichon, the male, even does it when he lays on your lap. But first, he has to paw your legs until they are in precisely the right configuration for him to start his spinning.

2 of our cats do this. Even after they've been laying down, they'll get up, do one turn and lay back down in the exact same position. It cracks me up.

Yep. My cat does the same thing.
My dog doesn't spin in too many circles, but she does do a few.

Our cats zone out on cat nip. They all play and roll around in it and then just sleep for hours! When I want them to chill out I just pop the top on the nip

Too funny...my cat thinks he's a dog! He begs for food and when he sleeps he curls up like my dog. We always say the cat thinks he's a dog and the dog wishes she were a cat (due to the fact she think's she's a lap dog....she's a lab).

our cat (Max) sits at the window every afternoon and waits for us to get home. As soon as he spots us pulling into the garage he'll go to the kitchen door to greet us. When we go to bed at night he goes down stairs and sleeps on the floor guarding the front door from intruders.

There are nights that I swear he's gotten into my crown royal. He'll be downstairs sleeping and all of sudden I hear him barreling up the stairs, down the hall, into the bonus room, behind the entertainment center and back down the stairs. The two girl cats just look at him with that "you're an idiot" look.

This is a side note, but the reason dogs lick your face is that they want you to vomit. Yes, it is true. It is left over from wolf behavior. This is how wolves feed their young. The pups lick in the mouth of the mother to get them to vomit so that they can eat. Nice!

Awww, geesh. I could've lived the rest of my life not knowing that!

One of mine will spin and spin (never just 3!), then scratch wildly, then lay down for a minute before jumping back up and going to someplace else!

Makes me laugh. All that effort for nothing!

OMG..one of my dogs does the same thing. Its as if she gets annoyed and moves to another location because of it.
