So who would like to explain this Zodiac change to me?

:confused3

Is there a part of the post missing? Like the Zodiac changed being referenced about?

All of my friends (well, not all... but a whole bunch) on Facebook are posting what their new Zodiac sign is supposed to be and and apparently it's been a huge topic of discussion on news programs today?

I googled it and there is a bunch of stuff about it, but I don't particularly understand it. I figured the Dis peeps would know.

Hmmm... here we go. This was posted not too long ago. Still doesn't really explain anything but it's better than what I've come across in the last twenty minutes worth of searching.

How the heck do you pronounce that???

(NECN) - It's one of the things people ask -- "what's your sign"? Astronomers say because the earth's alignment is different from where it was three thousand years ago when the study of astrology began -- the Zodiac signs are different.

In fact, there's now a 13th sign.

The new dates for Capricorn are January 20th through February 16th.
For Aquarius, it's February 16th through March 11th.
Pisces: March 11th through April 18th.
Aries: April 18th through May 13th.
Taurus: May 13th through June 21st.
Gemini: June 21st through July 20th.
Cancer: July 20th through August 10th.
Leo: August 10th through september 16th.
Virgo: September 16th through October 30th.
Libra: October 30th through november 23rd.
Scorpio: November 23rd through November 29th.

The new sign, Ophiuchus is for people with birthdates between November 29th and December 17th.

Sagittarius is now December 17th through January 20th.

These are the old signs:

Aries: March 21 - April 20
Taurus: April 21 - May 21
Gemini: May 22 - June 21
Cancer: June 22 - July 22
Leo: July 23 -August 21
Virgo: August 22 - September 23
Libra: September 24 - October 23
Scorpio: October 24 - November 22
Sagittarius: November 23 - December 22
Capricorn: December 23 - January 20
Aquarius: January 21 - February 19
Pisces: February 20- March 20

I lost my Virginity and became a Lion...

I'm still a Sagittarius since I don't know how the heck to pronounce that new one

I was either using a really bad search criteria originally or there are just more articles being posted within the last half hour. Ha. All I could find at first were verbose blog posts that didn't make a lick of sense.

I'm not longer a ram. *sniffle*
Now I'm a fish

Oh wait. Pisces isn't a fish, is it? LOL!!!!

Bah humbug.

Well, I guess THAT just blows all the horoscopes out of the water then. :lmao:

Supposedly with a Gemini you aren't supposed to marry another Gemini because we don't get along. My DH & I are both Gemini's or at least we were! He of course was on the "cusp" so almost a Cancer instead.

And the dates overlap!!!! What the world are you double-signed then?

I see Taurus ends on June 21 but Gemini begins on June 21 so what the world ARE you if you are born on June 21?

Looks like DH and I are now Taurus though *barely* for him. Hmm...does that mean now new traits apply and I'm no longer "twins" The world will probably be thankful for THAT! :rotfl:

Pisces IS a fish...that's what my daughter was but now apparently she is the "Age of Aquarius".

Gee are birthstone colors now changing too?

I'm too old for all these changes...I think I need to go complain on the Old Fogies thread. First other planets now have rings besides Saturn, the dinosaurs all changed their names, Pluto is no longer a planet and NOW...the stars are all messed up and changing "signs".

Hey! I'm a virgin. I heard guys like when you tell them that. :lmao:

Okay... my gut reaction was "fish" but then for some reason my head was telling me no. Ugh. Ha.

And one of the articles that popped up said something about "the age of Aquarius is actually the age of Capricorn" or something like that.

I was confused enough when I started hearing chefs call paprika "PAP-rick-uh" instead of "pap-REEK-uh".... but this is too much for my brain to handle. And we still don't know how to pronounce Ophuchicus.

And it looks like there's only one week out of the year that you could be a Scorpio. I guess that makes Scorpio's mighty special!

I'm a new Taurus too. Which is funny because anyone who know me would peg me as a Gemini.

Well, no wonder why there have been so many divorces. Now people can figure out which sign they really are and who they are supposed to marry.

And I wonder if, for upcoming divorces, they will write on the list of reasons: incompatible Zodiac sign. :p

Well, just to confuse you further, your sign only changed in some versions, and not others

Fans of the Zodiac have been bombarded with the unsettling news that their astrological sign may not be what they thought.

The horror of switching from Gemini to Taurus had people rushing to the Web for answers, sending searches for "zodiac signs" into the stratosphere.

So has your sign changed? Probably not. But it all depends on what kind of astrology you follow. Let us explain.

It may come as a surprise that there are different branches of astrology. A main Eastern form, for example, called Sidereal astrology, looks to the background stars, those famous constellations, as its guide.

Western astrology -- which uses the zodiac -- has its signs fixed to the seasons. Most Westerners, and all those horoscope pages we eagerly check, go by the zodiac. These signs follow what early astrologers called star signs, whose reference points are the tropics that form a ring around the earth. The zodiac is based on our relationship to the sun, not the stars.

The back story: About 2,000 years ago, the astrological signs and the astronomical ones were the same. But not anymore. The locations of the signs are based on the sun's location on the first day of spring. That location in the sky has slowly drifted westward because of something called "precession" -- the earth continually wobbles (a scientific term for a slight motion) every 26,000 years. Since the constellations were first identified, they have shifted some 30 degrees. Translation: The signs have slipped about a month westward, relative to the stars.

What this means to you: If you follow astrology that is linked to the constellations, your sign would go from say, a Gemini to a Taurus. You could even have a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, which you may have read about.

"It's a huge point of confusion for the public," says Bing Quock, assistant director of Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. For those who follow Western astrology, "astrologers are not talking about the constellations at all. When an astrologer says the sun is in a certain sign, they're talking about the sign, the location relative to the equinox. They're not talking about the location of the constellations. "

In short, if you follow the Sidereal astrology, the Eastern branch, your sign may have shifted. (And most likely, no surprise to you at all: This news is hundreds of years old).

But for the rest of us, our horoscope, and our signs, are still the same.

They'll probably just annul it. I can just hear the judge now "My word, these people should NEVER have married. But, of course, it wasn't their fault...they thought there were only TWELVE Zodiac signs. We'll just blot this disgrace from their lives!"

I agree with PP - I must be officially old. My grandparents may have remembered when bread was a dime but I can remember when Pluto was a planet, TRex was a dinosaur, and there were only twelve Zodiac signs.

I'm wagering it is pronounced "Oh-fyoo-shus" and means "twit who will believe anything an astrologist tells them."
