So, who HAS or IS an Only Child?

I think some people just like to pass rude comments.
I have received many comments about having an only child but I also heard the reverse this morning. I work in a VERY large company and was on my way to the cafeteria to grab a quick bite. Anyway, 2 men pass by and were carrying on a loud conversation.
"Geez, what do you have 10 kids by now?"
"No, this is our second." said rather miffed.
People that say rude things will just say rude things. I have given up defending my choice and just smile at rude comments. But sometimes I just feel like replying "Yes, I don't have any other children because I want my daughter to be lonely and miserable. You know it was such a horrible labor that this is her punishment." :rotfl: :lmao: Do you think they would get the sarcasm? :teeth:

I am an only child. I don't think I'm spoiled. I think I'm rather giving and considerate actually. I will admit that throughout my younger years and teenage years I was narcissistic, but most kids are....my parents NEVER spoiled me rotten and allowed me to behave like a brat or I got in BIG trouble- probably more trouble than a child with siblings because they wanted to make darn sure I didn't fall into that 'spoiled only child' stereotype.

In the last few years, my Best friend made a couple of insensitive comments- she has known me since I was 15 or so and said something like, "Who would have ever thought YOU would have 3 kids and I would have only 1- you would think it would be the other way..." And she said it in a tone like it was amazing I could deal with more than 1 child. (she is one of four kids).

The only problem I have with being an only is when I think about when my parents will pass on- I will not have a sibling to share memories of mom and dad with and reminisce, etc.

My son is an only child (he's 4). I am content with my family the way it is...and yes, he is probably a bit spoiled. :cool1: I constantly get people asking me when I am going to have a little girl...good grief.

I had one older sibling (8 years older)...we didn't get along growing up and have nothing to do with each other now. It was similar to being an only child, except with a thorn in my side. :rotfl2:

I agree that you have to make the family YOU want, not the family that is socially acceptable. People can be so rude.
