So, who has had to pay duty to Customs before?

Anyone out there ever exceed their personal (or family) exemption and have to pay duty?????

Looks like that's going to happen for us in 3.5 weeks, so just wondering how involved it gets....

We were a tiny bit over when my (then) fiancee declared my engagement ring - bought in St. Martin. The customs agent told him it wasn't worth the paperwork (I think we would have owed $10-$15) & let him go with out going through the process.

We cruised last in 2002 on a 7 night Eastern and I collect alcohol. Well I got several bottles of rum and when I placed them on my customs list I was over and was due to pay about 4.50 after exemptions and percentages.. The customs official who looked over my paperwork did not make me pay anything. He advised that usually under 10.00 they don't enforce the tax.. I guess it would depend on thier attitude and the day..
All I can say is don't try to hide anything and keep reciepts of all your purchases.

Well, as it stands right now I'm up to $17.40 in duty that will be due ... without buying the alcohol in Nassau or any souvenirs in Nassau or Castaway Cay, or even bidding in the silent auction on the ship.

I did it once years ago on a Carnival Cruise -- exceeded the limit on alcohol - went to San Juan & St. Thomas. Since I was young and was having trouble figuring out the exact amount I was legally entitled too -- I bought it down with me to the custom declaration area.

The agent wasn't too amused when I asked for help -- and didn't bother to charge me either !
