So what's the deal with Duffy?

Corbisblue - Very well said. I think you articulated it perfectly. I bet you're 100% right - even if those of us who don't 'get it' yet don't realize it (it may be subconscious), it is probably largely due to the lack of emotional connection.

See, for me, I see the Pixar characters taking off like wildfire and becoming extremely popular because there are movies featuring the characters - and almost every one of those movies tugs at the heart strings. Who here hasn't had to discreetly wipe a tear or two from their eyes during any of the "Toy Story" movies...or "Finding Nemo"...or "Monsters, Inc."....or "Wall-E"...all of them, really?

The Pixar characters are so well-defined, witty, fleshed out and expertly animated - it's like they are human, almost. Those storylines evoke emotion. Hence, they are very well-loved and beloved.

With Duffy, all of a sudden, there he was in DCA. My friends grew up going to DLR but they don't follow message boards so they have no clue who Duffy is. I would bet it's the same for many people. They have no idea who this Duffy is or where he came from, but there he is at a photo op in DCA.

So I think a cartoon or movie would have been highly beneficial in getting some buzz going for Duffy in Anaheim and building a fan base. I'm sure he will grow on people - heck, I said in my first post that I got in photos with Duffy on my December trip. We all welcome new characters. Some of them catch on and some don't, but it helps if they have a movie or a running TV show to familiarize people with those characters.

Thank You!

Having some sorta animated feature, or even a web video or series. That would help get people excited and actually have some sorta connection to Duffy.

I'm going to be finding Duffy when I'm in DCA next week and have my picture taken with him and my own Duffy bear! Also probably take photos of my Duffy around the parks, just for fun.

I'm really glad that there's a thread on this because Duffy hasn't been mentioned that much here on the DIS and I think he deserves an explanation!. Everyone's making really great points about how he should be portrayed to the public better. Thanks to OP for bringing up this topic :goodvibes

I've also decided that I REALLY want to go to Tokyo Disney someday

I agree that Duffy was kinda thrown at us, but now that people are learning the story....maybe it will (the popularity) take off. My kids love going to Make-a-Bear just so they can pick outfits.....now I'll be able to take them to do that but with a Disney bear at the parks. I'm a sucker for Teddy Bears. Going in a week & plan on getting me one....might even pick one up for the 4 kiddos I'm leaving at home this trip!!

Now the Vinylmations are a mystery to me......they got soooooooo popular, so quickly. When we were at DL last summer, I couldn't believe the "mania" going on for those things.......NOT A FAN!! I remember standing in multiple lines wanting to check out, but having to wait as people were trading, swapping or whatever it is they do with them. One person traded, opened the new one, traded, opened a new one, traded, opened the new one & one more time traded & opened the new one before they moved from the register.......they should set up registers just for that!

I still dont get duffy, i still dont get the craze with the vinyalmation either..

I love Duffy and so does my 5 year old niece. She had to get every outfit and costume there was for her bear. I limited myself to just one outfit but it was hard to choose!
There was hardly any line for him in DCA but he seemed really popular in Epcot. Lots of people carrying bears and lining up to meet him.

Oooohhh, okay. I saw the 'Duffy' thing at DCA earlier this month and had no clue what it was all about. I remember the teddy bears in the gift shops years ago before he had a name or cute little outfits. Thought about getting one for a baby niece, but they seemed pricey, even by Disney standards. Saw some at a Disney Outlet a few months later for pretty cheap. Maybe should have gotten a couple, held onto them a couple years, then sold them to someone in Japan! I won't be buying into this particular schtick. Disney gets enough of my money anyway!:rotfl:

The price shock alone on those clothes for duffy can make your head spin!! holly molly!!

Sherry,
I just found the Belle Ella and Jasmine trip reports you were talking about. You are right, very cute pictures! I had read and enjoyed previous trip reports of Belle Ella's, but hadn't seen the recent ones. My daughter loves to look at her pictures because she has so many great ones with characters.

I guess time will tell if Duffy will last. Knowing how great Disney is with their marketing, I'll bet if he continues to be popular they will make some DVD's with him for younger kids. I could see it working well with real life settings (not cartoon)--sort of like "The Lonely Doll" books that were popular in the 1960-70's. Anyone remember those?

It seems like the CM's have been trained well to greet anyone carrying a Duffy in a big way--making a fuss over them. That is good marketing as well!

I remember those books..

I think everyone is making great points about Duffy's exposure...he needs a cartoon on Disney Jr or something in order to get him moving,,,Heck even a short on his backstory before their next big movie would prob do it.

That being said I do love Duffy and my son wants one when we go in October if he is still there.

There are rumors that duffy & Mickey are going to share a meet & greet at the new gazebo in DCA so that should get him some flow and introduce him to more people if it is true.

Also all you Duffy lovers there is a new thread on the Community board to share your duffy's adventures or the adventures of those of any of your stuffed huggable friends here it is http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2678450 and it needs some LOVE!

Oh yeah! I don't know if you DL guys know it, but all those different country costumes you see each correspond with one of the countries in World Showcase at Epcot at WDW. Clearly an Epcot designed marketing trick. Duffy has his own store and meet and greet conveniently located right at the start of World Showcase- if you consider the Mexico end the start which my family does (I would bet they did a marketing study to see what end of the 1.2 mile half circle more people start on) They have the costumes there, BUT since you probably won't be inclined to load up at $15 a pop, they make sure that as you go through each country they have the corresponding Duffy costume for sale in a front and center location somewhere- and if you didn't buy Duffy at his store, you will find him available in each Country too.

DD(then 4) fell in love with Duffy and had to have that bear. Then, she wanted the sailor suit to match the meet and greet Duffy so that they could take a picture together ...and of course Duffy couldn't just go around naked. Then we got the "Oh we are eating lunch in Biergarten in Germany today....Duffy NEEDS a German costume to wear to lunch. Oh we riding the Grand Fiesta Tour boat ride in Mexico (which she likes to ride repeatedly) and we are having dinner at San Angel....Duffy just has to have a Mexican costume for that. " :scared1::scared1::scared1: Imagine that as you go around THE 11 COUNTRIES, in WS. We wound up with the sailor suit and costumes from 3 of the countries by the end of our trip. She would have liked to have had the sailor suit and all 11 costumes! :scared1::scared1::scared1:

Just in case that wasn't enough to get your little ones to notice Duffy, they also took our beloved paper masks on a stick that the kids colored and you got to stop at a kidcot station in each country in world showcase and get a paper charm attached to it from someone from that country, and replaced them with paper Duffy on a stick. No more charms, now they just stamp it on the stick or the back at each country. Even though DD loved Duffy, she was not happy about that one. Stick Duffy got dumped in the trash at the 2nd country (and this is a kid who won't throw anything away- we still have pieces of Confetti from the Playhouse Disney show from our trip last December at our house).

I think if it's costs and they can't do a quick cartoon feature, then a cartoon ad or something several times a day on The Disney Channel. Or, if staying at a DL or WDW resort have Must Do Stacie advertising it as well as the backstory.

Mickey needs to be the one pushing it since it's his bear, don't you think?

they have a duffy bear out this week for st. patty's.. still the sticker shock of that bear makes my head spin!

Naked Bear - $25.00
Sailor suit - $15.00
Outfits from 11
countries (11 X 15) - $165.00

TOTAL - $205 plus tax

Now, why on earth would that shock you? ;) Actually he is pretty good quality for a stuffed animal (very soft and cuddly) and technically his clothes are much cheaper than American Girl doll clothes.

Actually, I was talking to a really sweet CM at Epcot and kind of complaining that DD kept asking for an outfit for Duffy in every country and that Disney marketing was going to drive me crazy on that one, and she just rolled her eyes and said "Oh don't even get me started on that bear"

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: No I didn't pay that much, although DD would have liked me to. However I did pay the ridiculous amount of:

Naked Bear - $25
Sailor suit - $15
Outfits from
3 countries - $45

Total - $85 plus tax

.... Still :scared1::scared1::scared1: That is where I absolutely drew the line with DD and said NO MORE!!!

Well that's sucky! My DD11 still loves to do those mask. Well that's one more thing I don't have to hold onto. I have all the ones she has done over the years.

Oh, BTW, I was at DCA yesterday and once again Duffy had a very small line. Maybe one family waiting. I did see the St. Patty's one and even took a pix. I can post it if anyone wants to see it. Also took a pix of the St. Pat's caramel apple Mickey.
